PGT: Mavs Win Opener, Beat Lakers 99-91
A few points:
1) Brand looked great. Good job all night taking Howard out of his rhythm, and really helping the Mavs control the tempo of the game.
2) Wright showed a lot of offensive versatility, including two great drives from the free throw line-extended for five points at important points. That's a great complement to a low post presence, and this guy does seem like a better fit at PF than at C.
3) OJ and Darren really seemd to play a controlled game, and play very efficiently. No one did anything out of their element, and really
4) Defensively, this team looked amazing out there. Roddy, Brand, Wright, Marion, Jones, Mayo, Crowder all seemed very effective out there.
5) Roddy demonstrated some maddeningly low basketball IQ there at times, including a floater from behind the backboard while Curry was iso'd against Howard who had 3 fouls, and a badly bricked 3 early in the clock with only a 12 point lead with 6 minutes left (which the Mavs fortunately rebounded). Solid backup PG at this point with great defensive abilities. Nothing more though. I don't trust this guy to close games.
6) Curry can be an effective change of pace guy offensively. But he's a huge defensive liability, especially against a team featuring Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard.
7) LA really can't shoot free throws. They also don't know how to feature Steve Nash yet. When Pau got less involved moving the ball in the second half, the Mavs were able to seize control.
8) Jae Crowder looks ready to play. Spacing, headfakes, hesitation, rotation - just knows where to be and has a solid head for the game. He's ready to play now, and the more he plays, the more good things will happen.

It will be great to watch this team grow!

Me too. I was hopeful, but not optimistic going into the game.
Gotta get after it in Utah to consolidate the break.

Great team contributions for this win. Hard not to like what I saw, and it makes me very optimistic once Dirk gets back.

The interior defense was shocking. Brand and Wright were tough and even Curry rebounded decent. I loved Colison's aggression and control...

Roddy B is the backup PG. Its sink or swim and he was under control and dished the ball well...

Best coach in the league.
Big heart.
Good chemistry.
Loving EB's vet savvy and Collison's speed. Only Mayo didn't have a great game but he will come along. It must be weird to go from bench guy to #1 guy.
Wright and Roddy both look pretty polished. They just need to be at this level consistently. If they make that step, they will be very good rotational players.
Curry showed some value given he just joined the team. Could be a decent #3 center in certain situations. Similarly for Crowder as a rookie, he is a mini-Matrix and should be able to provide 20 solid energetic minutes easily.
VC provided some bench offense and I hope we can get this from him for about 15 per moving forward.
Marion is a friggin rock.

Other than over collapsing on a couple of occasions early, the D was really stout tonight. I'd like to see what happens against teams that more actively run on the ball p&rs. Everyone was able to play opposite their own number, which is something the Mavs haven't been able to do consistently since, what, 2007?

Gotta love how everyone really contributed tonight. Which we really need without Dirk in there.
I'm a fan of the Brand-Wright combo. They complement each other, and Brand neutralizes some of the weaknesses that people complain about with Wright. And with Dirk injured, we really could use Wright's offense out there on the court.
I really like Brand by the way. Smart, tough player. He may be undersized, but he's tough as nails on defense.
Hadn't really watched preseason, but I can see why everyone was so high on Crowder. Dude looks like he belongs out there. I was against trading Zeller for those 3 picks, but if you hit on Crowder, hard to complain about that trade.

Brand played well and i love that he takes the leadership role.
You got to give Roddy the freedom to do what he "wants" at times, that's most likely scoring. Besides those one idiotic floater he took i liked his game.
Overall, hoooray!
P.S.: Lakers still got time, it's just presea... oh!

In the 2nd half, we left the Lakers get some offensive rebounds, but we made up for it with our own.
Elton Brand - Solid defender, hopefully starts making that jumper and he could be a big offensive force
Brandan Wright - Wow! This guy came to play tonight. He was making crazy shots, blocking shots, getting rebounds, and making plays. Not sure if it was a fluke or if this guy is that much improved
Shawn Marion - Was off on his little floater to start off the game, but started making shots when it counted.
Darren Collison - Only had two turnovers, which is good considering how fast he was playing. Seems to like the floater, also. He has a jump shot, which is good to see from a PG. A scoring PG isn't bad as long as he knows when to shoot
O.J. Mayo - Started off hot, but cooled down majorly, and took one really dumb shot late in the 2nd half when it was still in doubt. He will come along, though
Jae Crowder - Shot the ball well in the 1st half and also was all over the floor. Didn't really see much of him the 2nd half, but he played really well for a rookie
Eddy Curry - Was beat a couple of times on defense, but at least he was a big body to put on Dwight and Pau. Also made some good offensive moves...hopefully he won't be a huge defensive liability every game
Rodrigue Beaubois - Started off slow, but came along in the 2nd half when we needed him. If this guy breaks through and has a big season, then this team will be good also.
Dahntay Jones - Didn't even notice he played for 8 minutes. No opinion really
Vince Carter - Took a lot of bad shots to start off...started to heat up a little when it counted. We'll need to rely on him to be one of our guys who can create his own shots

I told that Brand is a great pickup and a great defender: He was last year the best post up defender: http://www.libertyballers.com/2012/4...phia-76ers-nba
This team could become a light version of 2011. Deep, versatile, lots of weapons, good defense, team spirit.
But whats missing is more experience in the backcourt. You saw this in the last minutes when RC didnt lose any time to put carter in the game.

GREAT GAME from the Mavs. Nice solid performance. Crowder may be more ready than I thought.
And wow. Lakers might want to re-think that offense they're running. They had Nash playing the role of role player.

Well was solid from Eddy Curry for being so short time on the time.
You know exactly what you get from him. Good offense and no defense. Its ok to have him as an option for some minutes on the bench but i will be glad when we dont REALLY need him with Dirk and Kaman back.

Agreed about Brand and he was never a real athletic guy, just real tough and smart. Wright looks like a real player who just never stayed healthy or had a chance as he keeps getting better cause you love a big that has his ability to finish near the rim...

Great win. We managed the win down 2 key players with more new faces out there than LA had. Carlisle is the man!

Every draft "bust" could use a little Rick Carlisle in their life.

While I agree with this in general, I don't agree with this as applied to Brand. The guy has been a beast, and put together a few monster seasons with LAC. He just knows how to play.

Damn nice opening night win. Hard to imagine given the names the Lakers rolled out, but that was a story of sustained superiority by the Mavs. Lots of guys with quality contributions. Mayo was probably the only one who really left me wanting more. But how nice was it to get 28 pts, 9 assists, and 4 steals against 2 TOs from the point guard position?

Amazing team effort, it was kind of like how the Nuggets doing it in the last 2 years. That's the way until the Dirkster comes back, we need contributions from everybody. Player of the game was Brand for me. Just an amazing defender.

Yeahhh for the win!!! But sometimes you can't be surprised when things like this happen...Knowing you are the underdog sometimes relieves a lot game stress/nerves. There was definitely more pressure on the Lakers vs. the Mavs.
Miami struggled the first 30 games when Lebron/Bosh joined there, but eventually made the finals against the Mavs....
The Lakers will get this figured out pretty soon, and will probably be top of the conference by mid to late season. Too much talent. If they don't, coach will be out of there pretty soon.

I am just shocked at the complete 180 the whole team (coaching as well) did from the preseason.

Nash becomes average in any system that's not D'Antoni system. That is why Porter was fired when they traded for Shaq that one year.
Mike put that offense in to keep Bryant from bogging the offense. He looked good curling to basket in the 1st. The hybrid Princeton was fine in the 1st qtr when the Lakers had the lead. Pau killed it with his passing and scoring. But the TNT guys felt that Pau is only the 3rd-4th best player on the team so the offense shouldn't run through him which is ridiculous being as though he probably the best skilled big man in the game. Lakers are going feel sorry for swapping the #2 big man for the #1 big man instead of going for depth. Could of had Iggy, Vucevic(nice backup for Pau), Young?, and draft picks for Bynum.

Nash vs. DC was like Kidd vs. Lin....
Such a nice feeling to be on the right side of this matchump. Finally some young quick guys who attack the basket. Feels a little bit like 05/06...
DC - Harris
Roddy - Marquis Daniels
Carter - Stackhouse
Mayo - Jet
Marion - Josh
Curry - Diop
Brand - KVH
Kaman - Damp
Dirk - Dirk
Crowder - Griffin
Wright - Powell

Not sure why anyone would criticize Roddy's BBIQ in this game. 5 assists and 0 turnovers is pretty much all the BBIQ I need to see from him.
If the pgs are going to be our best players, then this team should be able to stay afloat until Dirk gets back. Darren and Roddy need to do this every night.
