Wouldn't it have been nice to pick him up? Great find for Miami

Whiteside cannot be traded until Feb 24th, because he just signed his contract. The trade deadline is Feb 19th, therefore he will not be traded this season even if we had interesting trade pieces.

I think this thread was reflective rather than an actual trade proposal.

Fair enough. Yes it would have been good to pick up a contributing player like him for nothing.

Most D-leaguers aren't Whiteside-- they are Greg Smith or worse. It's why they are in the D-League and not picked up by one of the other 29 teams.

Whiteside with another 24/20 Game while being 11/12 from the Field.
That dude is out of this world. Miami are so lucky.

I guess most NBA teams would think we are lucky too. Wright, JJ, and it looks like Aminu will join the list of throwaway players that the Mavs have developed into useful players

You can argue that he is the best shot blocker in the league.
Im totally in to make him our #1 target next summer for a max contract (okay, i guess at least 7-8 teams gonna have the same idea). Dont go for the Durant pipedream...
1a Whitside
1b Horford
2 Noah
3 Conley

I still think grabbing Whiteside to accompany Deron, Matthews, Parsons, Dirk, and Powell could be really special

Absolutely no to Noah. He's just about completely done.

Noah is another one of those guys that I'd love to buy low on if the Howard/Horford/Whiteside guys go somewhere else. His value will never be lower, and there's a good chance the Mavs training staff gets him healthier than he's been since his MVP caliber season a couple of years back.

He might be. Would be really hesitant to give him a multi year deal.
Might be better off keeping Zaza and offering Festus Ezelli something like 10-12 per. He's a restricted FA and Warriors probably can't afford to keep him and Barnes.

Noah isn't done. The problem is that he is offensively rather limited. It's a problem when as a big your best skill is passing the ball.
Would I want him to start over Zaza? Probably not. But he would be great with his defense off the bench. He would also be awesome locker room presence. I get it that he wouldn't be as great with our Harris-Barea pick and roll but his other strengths would make up for it. All in all I think Bulls are doing wonderful job to get him cheap next summer.
I really doubt that Whiteside will go anywhere if Heat offer him max. It's his big chance.

I think Whiteside is a pipedream.
Probably something more realistic would be Mihinmi or Hibbert.
Noah would be ok but wouldn't over commit to him.

If Mahinmi (mediocre, ex-Mav who we could have locked up for cheap) ends up being our primary center acquisition this summer, then I'm gonna PM you my home address so you can come kick me directly in the balls...

Agree Mihinmi is mediocre at best but what other realistic options are out there?
Point being that we spend all of our time and effort chasing these pipe dreams in FA and end up having to sign guys like Dalembert (twice) when that big one gets away.
I don't want to see the Mavs chase Whiteside while Zaza is signing with someone else.
Donnie and Mark need to forget FA and Draft picks and stick to the thing they do best which is trades. They did a decent job the past two seasons with the Chandler and Zaza deals.
Zaza/McGee/Powell center situation could very well be better than anything else we can realistically put together through FA.
If McGee pans out and Powell/Anderson continue to develop I don't really see any major areas that will need to be addressed in FA other than resigning the players we have.

Everyone thought that DeAndra is a pipedream too.
Fun fact with the Heat: Because of just early birds they need cap space to offer Whiteside a max deal.
They have 50 million committed in Bosh/Dragic/McRoberts/Winslow. There was a headline they are going after Durant. They just cant offer on july 1st big contracts to Durant, Whiteside and Wade. I also doubt that Wade takes a huge discount.
So when the Heat are on Durants doorstep, go with the Jordan pitch to Whiteside. Jordan said the pitch was great and it basically worked..
Im also curious with Horford, he is pretty much in the LMA situation. If he stays in Atlanta, it will be pretty much for the rest of his career. The Hawks are the Hawks, solid in the east but never really had any real significance in the league. The arena is also completly dead during the RS...
I wouldnt be surprised if Horford would change teams...

I understand your point but that strategy hasn't worked out for us yet and some of us are just losing faith that we will ever land a great FA center.
If we can lock up Zaza and have enough cap left then I say chase the dream FA center all they want because we are pretty much set everywhere else.
And Jordan actually ended up being a pipedream....the big fish Cuban caught but jumped out of the boat before getting back to shore

Well, Zaza is going the be almost 32 next summer and i think it doesnt take much to "lock him up" early. I also doubt he is finishing the season with a double-double, his numbers are going to drop.
So locking up Zaza and throwing a max offer to Whiteside or Horford on July 1st should be the way to go.
Well, my dream scenario would be to have 45 mio cap space to throw max at Horford (25m) and Whiteside (20m) as a combined pitch. But this would mean to dumb either Harris or Barea, asking Deron to take the 5m player option, asking Dirk to opt out for another smaller contract etc....

They do have the option to stretch waive JJB and Devin. Doubt they'd do that but it at least offers flexibilty. Of course they would need to be replaced so the savings wouldn't be huge. Probably will explore trading one or both.
I think Dirk takes less before Deron does, unfortunately. No way he opts in with his injury issues.

Absolutely agree and am certainly on board with going after big fish if we have some sort of backup plan. Locking up Zaza to something around mid-level or a little more would be that backup plan and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to be a back up to Whiteside or Horford.
A rotation of Whiteside/Horford/Dirk/Powell would be insane and probably is another pipedream but would be simply awesome.

If the Mavs could land Whiteside and Horford i bet Dirk would take Vets Minimum.
This would be his last chance to contend and he really doesnt need a single $ anymore.

I wouldn't say no to getting both Horford and Whiteside, but I don't know if you want to play that big in today's NBA. I'd say we offer both the max and sign whoever accepts it, then spend the rest on qualty guard depth (Conley?).

I see that pipedreaming is in its full effect. Why do you guys leave Kevin Durant out of it? Keep Conley, Durant, Dirk, Horford, Whiteside.

I like to think how to make current team better and not to rebuild the roster year after year. Considering that's what Mavs have done so far then by default I can't be a Mavs fan.
It wouldn't actually bother me so much if it was happening before summer or after the trade deadline. We're not even halfway through this season and people talk about free agency (in Trade and Draft Board).

As far as the ""Trade and Draft Board" part: this thread was started back in January, right before the trade deadline... Looks like people just continued the discussion here instead of starting a new thread.

The radio was talking about this guy and mentioned that he's got "lots of red flags" which is why it's taken so long to get into the league. Anyone know what they are? The guy is 4th in rebounding and #1 in blocks by a LARGE margin at 4.0 vs #2 at 2.6 bpg.
