Preseason GDT: Mavs vs Hornets 10/03/16 (7:30pm CT)
No word on the lineup yet, but I imagine the vets sit.

...and even in the preseason, the Mavs are THE traveling show... anyways, the Hornyts are just a steppingstone for the Mavs' new guys to learn Coach C's system, for the team to bond, and for the Other Curry to showcase some of his family's DNA, sooo:
Mavs - 101
Hornyts - 90

More underwhelming basketball wants me to see Quincy Acy try to go 20-20 tonight.

Worst part about Saturdays feed was no Mark Followill. Hearing him during Olympics and on some College games only makes me miss Mavs basketball more during the long off season.

Is there any guard in the league better than Barea at using their body as a screen for their own offense? I've given him a lot of flack over the years for his deficiencies, but damn is he good at what he is good at.

Didn't know Hammons had that kind of range.

I like what I see so far from Simba and Brussino. Most of our young guys look really solid.

I like what I see from this team so far. I feel so much positive energy from watching them. It is a good bet that JA and Powell are going to another step in their respective games. Matthews is looking a lot more spry. I'd like to see that Brussino kid stick. He definitely looks ready to shoot. As does Curry... Curry is going to be a great pick up.

In a free agency where guys like Evan Turner got 70m the Mavs got Seth Curry for 2yrs 6m. No clue how that happened still.

Mavs are very smart with these types of players.
Rick finishing the game with the D squad again.

Hammons pretty decent. 6pts, 9reb
Curry was a steal. Cost us nothing. 2/6 salary was a bargain for two CBAs ago. Dude can shoot. Carlisle can try to get him to play D.
Acy is solid. Good D and knows how to fit his offense into ours. Doesn't force.
Really want to see more starters, but good stuff. Always nice when its a W, even when the second stringers didn't even hit the floor for most of the second half.

Hammons definitely still looks a bit raw and timid, but he is light years better than whenst we last saw him in the summer league.
Powell needs to not think about the jump shot. You can tell that he is still trying to hard to be a jump shooter. Just shoot it naturally.
Curry is sneaky good. He'll put up 12 points in a quarter, and you'll wonder how he did it.
I'm curious as to who is actually making the last roster spot or two. You'd think Gibson would be a lock, but I just haven't really been impressed with him these two games.
Oh and Barnes being one for ten is no good. I know he isn't really trying with it being preseason and all, but I've been far more impressed with Anderson.

I don't expect much from Barnes aside from just wanting to be here and having a good attitude. He just doesn't have IT. I'm much more excited about Anderson and Curry.
Curry has done really well playing PG mins. I think he's going to become a damn good player at least. That shot is as smooth as if not smoother than Steph.

I liked pretty much all of the shots Barnes took. Probably with the exception of one shot that looked off balance and then one where he drove in the paint and had an awkward looking shot. His shots were not falling so I liked the idea but the actual shot itself I thought wasn't great. His jump shots were not falling but it's really early in the preseason process and he is on a new team, in a new role, and he has amplified expectations. I'm not really worried right now about his shooting percent it's more about how comfortable he looks, the shots he's taking, and the defensive effort he's showing. KD was like 2-9fg with the Warriors in his debut, with a full compliment of starters around him. Not to mention he's vastly superior to HB.
Also HB is 24yrs old. Off the top of my head Chauncey Billups when he was 24 was labeled as a disappointment and then he joined RC in Detroit and he credits RC with helping him.
http://www.espn.com/blog/dallas/mave...j-mayo-signing
Quote:
O.J. Mayo reached out to Chauncey Billups, one of his favorite players in the league, while researching potential destinations this summer. Billups strongly recommended that Mayo play for Rick Carlisle, who played a significant role in Billups achieving his potential.
“He said (Carlisle) is a great coach for me to help expand my game,” Mayo said.
Billups, like Mayo now, was a No. 3 overall pick in his mid-20s who hadn’t lived up high-lottery expectations when he signed with the Carlisle-coached Pistons in the summer of 2002. Detroit was Billups’ fifth NBA team, and while he showed promise as a part-time starter the previous season in Minnesota, he had yet to prove he could be a premier point guard.
Carlisle gave Billups that opportunity in 2002-03, when he started for a 50-win team that advanced to the conference finals. That was the only seasons Carlisle coached Billups, but Billups gives Carlisle credit for helping him become a five-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion who is now known as Mr. Big Shot.
|
Quote:
Billups’ advice to Mayo: Let Carlisle coach you.
|
Now I'm not saying HB will become a 5x All Star. The Mayo thing didn't work out but that dude fell off a truck after he left here so maybe RC kept his career afloat one last year before it tanked. RC has brought out the best in most people who have come here, probably with the exception of Crowder, where Crowder says he could do more than stand in a corner. But it's preseason so let's just give it some time(not directed at anyone unless your name is thesportychannel), I thought he at least looked comfortable and took shots that looked good. All his shots seemed to hit front rim, indicative of not having your legs and I would think fairly common early in the preseason.

Barnes will get his offensive going eventually. Actually looks better with him out there to create more shots for other teammates. Hence why Anderson probably looked good last night. Just wait till our whole starting 5 gets going. The open shots can get for real this year.

Barnes is fine. He had one off game in the second game of pre-season. Even Dirk has had 1-10 games. He took good shots, fit within the offense, didn't force anything. The ball just didn't fall for him. I'd be more worried if he was forcing things and looked uncomfortable.

It's hard to notice who is who with so much camp fodder on the floor anyway. Even Seth Curry. Unless they say his name, then I hardly know who is shooting the ball.

I'm surprised at how effective Brussino looks at this point. His body is a couple years away, but the talent is obvious.

Seth Curry's performance is trending on my FB. Too bad they showed a picture of Kyrie Irving for their nba.com link.

His body doesn't look that far away. It's not worse off than Parsons. If he's quick his length will help him a lot. Half the kids coming out in the NBA nowdays are scrawny.

@espn_macmahon: Rick Carlisle on Seth Curry (20 points, 7-13 FG in 22 minutes Monday night): "He can get it going quick. I love his aggression, and he's shown he can play both guard positions. Lot of positives, and he's gearing up his posture and disposition on defense. He's been picked on for a couple years -- and I've talked to him a lot about it, our coaches have. He's making a stronger stand defensively, and I think he's going to keep getting stronger."
