Interesting note: Donnie said they'll chase "pick 61" so we're definitely going to pick up an undrafted player or two.

Yea, there was a lot that made sense last night, but a lot that was puzzling. Including that. I'm sure that is what happens every draft, but this year I payed closer attention with the Mavs having a relevant pick.
He won several awards including the Karl Malone award, which goes to the top PF in the nation.

Would love to get Motley - avg 17 and 10 - great talent. had it not been for the knee injury he was projected to be picked 10 to 20 range.

Donnie said they are hopeful to sign Johnathan Motley.
Our own Melonhead tweeted a sportsdaydfw quote for the source.

I'm no Markkanen fan, but I kinda feel for the guy since he's forever going to be compared to Butler after that trade... That's a rough way to start an NBA career.

We do kinda gotta give yahyes some credit here. Markkanen going 7 was higher than most people thought would happen.
I'm just glad the Mavs didn't take him because he could never fill Dirk's shoes. And the Mavs needed to start a different kinda of chapter and did just that with Smith.

Yeah, but the move earned a solid "F" on almost every draft grade I've seen.

Such a strange trade. Almost like a panic trade. They gave up a top 15 player in the league in his prime for 3 kinda decent guys none of whom profiles as future all-star. I mean maybe Dunn will improve a ton, but as Zach Lowe pointed out he's already 23. Lavine hasn't played since ACL and had his limitations anyway and Lauri I'm sure will be a useful player but is one-dimensional at this point. i could see if they got Issac or another high upside guy at 7. What a shitty deal.

I know! Insane. I meant to add that, thanks. That's the strangest part of it in some ways. It's like they didn't realize they were in the stronger bargaining position. They probably could've kept 13 and added another asset form Minn and STILL gotten it done

@DTownLander: Donnie told me yesterday they were "so close" to landing Jordan Bell. They liked him a lot. Damn.

I never thought in a million years Smith Jr would fall to 9, so there is no reason to be greedy. Plus we got that kid from Baylor, so it's all good.

I just wonder what the deal was to get the pick to get him. Because we didn't have the cash to buy the pick like GSW's.

Must have been Yogi and/or future 2nd for the pick. I don't see anything else that works. I'm guessing Chicago decided Yogi would be redundant with Dunn there and MCW possibly receiving a QO.
Why don't we have the cash to buy the pick? I know the limit every season is $3.5 million in any trade, what did we use the cash on?

We sent $3,227,286 to the Pacers to dump Jeremy Evans there last off season. And since the NBA season does not begin until July 1st our 3.5m doesn't reset until then.

Seems like a poor use of assets. Could we not fit Harrison Barnes w/out dumping Evans? My memory is foggy. Think he was making minimum so they paid 3.2 to clear 1.2?

Pretty sure he still had a couple years left on his contract and he was taking up a roster spot.

I had forgotten the circumstances so I looked it up. Sadly no, he was in the final year of his deal. He was scheduled to make 1.2m. We had to move him to make room for Signing Barnes and Dwill and absorbing Bogut.
Edit- I believe Bogut was the last one of those things to happen so I assume their thought process was "send out cash and get a stop gap center to compete with, no brainer". Us and Rockets were going after him and he chose us. At the time I think we all thought Bogut was an upgrade to Zaza to be fair I guess.

Thank god Bulls did that because otherwise I dont think Mark goes at 7. They didnt do any interview or any workout with him. Its like they truly decided at the last second to trade Butler.

I was looking at old drafts. Wow, do you all remember when we drafted Maurice Ager in 2006? Talk about the player that time forgot.

I remember how excited Donnie was after drafting Ager....but I guess they have to be.
This time I think he can be excited without any regrets.

All those years we desperately choosed position over potential, going for the "Wade light" slashing SG...

Chicago panicked for sure. You simply don't trade a top 10-15 player in the league, in his prime, who is also under contract for 3 MORE YEARS, for that return. And they gave up their 1st rounder?! Foolish trade IMO. I think if they didn't give up their pick, it may have been palatable, but Minny absolutely made off with that trade.

WOW
Insane blow to Missouri's hopes for this season, not to mention the young man's career. I'm sure he will be fine long-term, but a lot of kids look forward to making that big next step in their career, whether it is just a one-and-done season or not.
As it related to the draft board, we will have to wait until workouts leading up to the draft. He becomes a riskier prospect based on the injury and now no game tape from college level competition.
Curious how his brother and Tilmon respond with him out. Doubt they become draftable prospects, but you never know.

Yeah, in the sub-forum that nobody ever checks... But feel free to make a 2018 draft thread if you want to talk about it over here. None of this is 2017 news.
