GDT Game 80 - Mavs (24-55) @ Pistons (37-41) 6:00pm FSSW
Since ties are decided by a coin flip, technically (though unlikely) we can still finish the season anywhere between #2-9... A loss tonight would make the worst we could possibly finish #7... TANK HARD, the end is in sight!

IF the game is close down the stretch, we could always deploy the 4 man squad again a few times to give away free throws.

Hotrod Williams off the bench gives us a pretty good chance...

Hopefully Kings beat Memphis and we lose this. Today has the potential to be a very happy day, or an extremely sad one.

Another "interesting" game -- can't we just fold?

DSJ shot 1 for 9 but tied for the team lead with +4. Hmm. 🤔

Ok, please empty the bench for the 4th. Minus Motley, he's not allowed back on the floor.

All the teeth gnashing on here and the Mavs might be doing the best tank job of all the teams around them.

We've only been clamoring for Motley all season and knew he could only get a real chance once Noel was gone. I'd take Motley over Noel easily at this point.

Mavs could easily have the best bench in the league next year between Powell, Motley, Kleber, Curry, JJB, and McDermott.

Considering we might actually be a borderline playoff team if we tried..... Yeah.

That's going to be the big offseason debate. Are the Mavs ACTUALLY good enough to try and make the playoffs? Because I've seen opinions all over the place with regards to whether they purposely tanked or just weren't good enough.

That's a solid bench, but I think GS wins best bench. Most of their guys could be starters for other teams.

I think it was a little bit of both... If Curry was healthy and Noel had his head screwed on straight, I think we would have been in the mix for the 8-10 seed, which would have ultimately been a wasted season.
I'll probably be fine with the way things turned out once the draft rolls around.

Imo, we aren't good enough to make the playoffs but we will try. Prolly finish with a record that puts us around 10-13 in the draft. Even if we had Wes and Seth the reason we lost so many close games is because outside of Dirk nobody on this team knows how to play their roles to win down the stretch. Barring us landing a big free agent I don't see any free agent out there after the big names that helps us enough to win games. A player like Gordon could help long term but to win next year? Doubtful I think.
I rly think Mavs are gonna strikeout again in free agency, why would any big name sign with a bottom 5 team? I think we finally use our cap space though. I think we will take on contracts for teams who will actually sign the big names. Like Toronto, Washington, Bucks, maybe Charlotte(unless they nuke it by trading Kemba they need to get better fast) in exchange for young players/picks. And then the Mavs will do what they always do, they will compete for the playoffs and likely goon their way to 32-35 wins. Maybe they then use those assets acquired in the off season to get a player before the deadline next year. But the free agents in this market outside of those top names are very underwhelming as far as winning now is concerned imo.
Edit- to be fair a jump from a 24-25 win team to 33-35 would be successful as far as building goes if it happens. But no matter how you slice it going from 24 to 45ish wins would be something I haven't really seen outside of a superstar joining a team.

The only Mavericks since 2004 to have 26/12 games are Dirk, Marion, J-Ho, and Motley....

Motley is a nice surprise, and Harrell shows that energy bigs can still play a big role in today's NBA, even if they can't shoot the 3, and maybe Motley will be able to shoot it in the future. If he can make that three so confidently crunch time, nothing but net, with really good form, he should be able to shoot it at least 35-36%. I am curious to see what he'll do with the remaining games, which we'll all lose hopefully, and maybe even the 3rd best odds could be ours.

There is no debate about whether or not we purposely tried to tank. We were barely just not good enough. Only recently has the lineups started to reflect the need to shut it down. Hell all season we've wanted more of this guy or that guy and bitched about small ball. I saw a stat of 34 games lost by less than 7 points including last night.

There was an article discussing the substantial jump teams that lose a lot of clutch games tend to make the following season. Mavs have one of the worst records ever in close games. I think we should fairly expect the Mavs to improve and land somewhere between 6-10.
Edit: here ya go

Nice. I wonder if his play warrants a team friendly extension. If I’m Donnie, I think I try to get the young man locked up for at least another few years. He’s kind of a throw back player, but I just love how comfortable he looks operating inside. That three he made didn’t look that flukish either. He’s the kind of physical athletic big every team needs these days.

Is he throwback? He seems to fit the mold exactly for the modern NBA center. A bit smaller, can fun the floor, and can shoot from seemingly anywhere. Seriously, how many centers have such a soft and effective mid-ranger like he has?
What Motley really has are fundamentals. Notice how he is almost always in the right place at the right time to make a play? He reads the floor very well.

Yeah, after I typed that I thought maybe throwback player is not really the right way to describe him. I love his combination of length, strength, and athleticism. Add to that his natural feel for the game, touch around the rim and a decent enough jump shot; this guy looks like a great building block for any team. I’m really looking forward to his play going forward, and I hope it’s alongside DSJ for years to come.
