I see Barnes possibly opting out so he can try to get another 4-year contract while he's healthy & productive (4/60 or something along those lines), but no way in hell does Powell opt out of that $10m when he's probably looking at something in the 3/15 range.

I also see him opting out now....the Mavs have now two legit 23-25PPG stars, a chucker in THJ and around 28m cap. He should be stressed about his role and usage rate next season
Best case for Barnes: 3rd option behind the stars.
Worst case: Mavs sign another 18-20PPG dude and he fights with THJ who is the 4th option.
Luka and Doncic AND 50m+ cap would be insane. And imagine we are keeping the pick this year...

You’re missing Trey Burke who was part of the KP trade. He’s also a UFA after the season. I think they will definitely bring back Maxi and DFS and will need at least 1 more backup PG. Devin Harris could be brought back on a vet min deal. So they won’t exactly have enough for a max player after signing those 3. Personally I would prefer for them to sign a couple guys to 1 year deals and save their cap space for the 2020 off season.

So now that we're rumored to go for Vuc in the summer... Are we trying to build the all-white team?

We are going to need a lot of defense beside Doncingis.
Middleton or Bledsoe for big bucks and Beverley for small bucks

I thought Porzingis was actually a really good defender? Was among league leaders in blocks in his full seasons.

He's a good rim protector I think, not sure how he fares defending the pick n roll out on the perimeter tbh

He had the mobility to cut off the ball, and the length to recover, and the reach to challenge an outside shot.
Still has length and reach. Be optimistic about the mobility.

Any of the 3 Bucks, whichever gets squeezed, would fit well here. Would like Brogdon the best. Some team will offer 4yrs 60m. And you get tied up in FA waiting on the Bucks to match or not.
Bledsoe is an excellent defender/secondary ball handler. But he's pushing 30 and injury prone. Also shooting 30% from 3. Think he goes for something like 4yr.72m
Middleton's defense is middling. But he can shoot and create. He will also come with the highest price tag. 4yr. 100m minimum.

This would be unreal. Could legit get two starters and retain Maxi and DSJ.
If we manage to finish 8th worst, which is at least somewhat realistic, we have a 26.3% shot at top4. No way we finish bottom 5 so we need some luck

From a DMN article by Brad Townsend. He's pretty reliable I think? I like Vuc but I feel like he'd be a disaster on defense with Luka/KP. What do I know though?

Barnes is going to opt out -- there's a bunch of teams with a ton of money to throw around this summer... Not so much in 2020.

Assuming he has good representation and smart people in his ear...I think we saw that surprisingly bad advice can be given a la DSJ absence.

DSJ was getting bad advice from his DAD -- it's kinda hard to shut out your parents at his age.
Plus, this isn't Barnes' first rodeo, his representation landed him the contract that we're currently overpaying him. They know what they're doing.

After trading Barnes for Jackson ($3.28M next season) and Z-Bo (expiring), the Mavs are just about in the max cap space ballgame depending on if/where they pick in the draft.

My guess is Vucevic or Middleton. Dont think they have a shot at any of the eight big names.

If Hawks get our pick we have around 30m cap (40 if Powell opts out)
If we get our pick we just have around 23-24m cap (or 33-34 if Powell opts out)
But now we are able to throw at least a 23m offer out there

So let me get this straight. In one year we went from a doormat to having Luka KP and the ability to open up a max slot to add to them?
seriously... GM of the year.

A max contract for a player with fewer than 7 years of experience is 27 mill

add a probably 30% chance to pick top-4, adding a third rebuilding piece even before free agency begins

They're good for one calendar year.
We don't want to use it this year because we'd be essentially trading air for a player with a salary and it seems like we want to sign a big player to play with Doncic and KP.
I believe that we have to give it up if we go over the cap, too? I'm not 100% on that, though

KPs cap hold is just 17m.
Thats why they will agree on a max contract but just sign it after they blew the rest of their cap (allowing them to go 10m over the cap with the then KP max contract starting at 27m)

Klay is the ideal fit and it’s not happening. Wouldn’t say no to Durant
Keep coming back to Brogdon. Secondary ballhandler, versatile defender, floor spacer. Relatively young. RFA though.
Middleton works for some of the same reasons, not sure about his defensive advanced stats but imagining he’s around average on that end.
Not sure how Vucevic and KP fit together. But we would have an incredibly skilled team offensively.
