LOL...
@ShamsCharania: Free agent forward Marcus Morris has agreed to a two-year, $20M deal with the San Antonio Spurs, with a second-year player option, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

LOL. Wow. Speechless at this point I'm laughing so hard, and I really didn't have an opinion one way or the other on Morris, but the cumulative effect of "not a Mav" is getting ridiculous.

Actually, I think this would be true had the Mavs signed either Vuc or Kemba. I wonder if the Mavs talked themselves out of even making a run at Vuc because of his playoff performance. We'll never know unless heads roll this off-season because of the FA failure, and then it'll be a leak from a disgruntled ex-employee. How's that for job security? Buying silence. LOL

@espn_macmahon: Checked in earlier to see if Mavs — who still have $22M of cap space — were making run at Marcus Morris and was told no. He’s more of a 4 than 3, so fit wouldn’t have been perfect on team with Kristaps Porzingis and Maxi Kleber. But was clearly best available talent.

We should WANT the only starters left on the market when we currently only have two.

Yeah, did the Spurs want Morris? Did they need Morris? I dunno the answer to either of those questions, but I know for sure that they can trade Morris later on down the line.

I can guarantee you that on opening day we will have 5 starters. Whether you (and I use “you” very generally) value those players more than someone who’s full time job is evaluating NBA talent is a different story.

And we can trade cap space by absorbing bad contracts. I honestly may be missing something but how is one of those better than the other?

Am I the only one who thinks these objections paint Carlisle in a negative light? If he's a top 3-5 coach in the NBA, why exactly is it so difficult for him to fit various parts together. Nobody is asking for him to be Don Nelson, but can't there be a little creative tinkering with the flow offense? and if not, then why the hell not discard it for a more productive offense that takes better advantage of the mash of the talent we have available?

I’m fine not signing Morris, but not taking advantage of teams need for cap space by absorbing a bad contract along with some picks is an underrated bad non-move.

Absorbing bad contracts usually gets you draft picks and a sucky player
Signing a Morris guy and trading him later gets you a decent player and a tradeable asset

No we can't because as soon as Porzingis signs his contract we are over the cap and we have zero space to work with. At least players can be retained and traded after you go over the cap... This is a "use it or lose it" situation, and we don't appear to want to use it on anyone.

Yeah, not using it is worse than dry powder. This is peeing on your own powder and ruining it. :-(

David Lord said we could work a way to keep most if not all of the TPE after the contracts are all signed
So we could absorb some bad contracts

Those details aren't exactly right -- but yes, Mavs have an avenue to keep some or all of their TPE for later, if they don't see a desirable way to use that $23M of spending room they had available.

The Mavs are developing something that they haven’t prioritized in a long time - chemistry. In my opinion, adding a player who isn’t part of our long term plan and thereby tapping the brakes on building up our chemistry and continuity is similar in value to taking on a “sucky” player but also getting potentially valuable draft picks.
We aren’t looking to win this year, we are looking to build a team.

The angle of using it or losing it is important, and I agree I was overlooking that. If that’s truly the case, then sure, spend away.
That being said, I don’t understand the mechanics of TPEs and going over the cap and all of that, and it looks like maybe the FO, (again the people that do this for a living) might understand it a little more than we do and maybe, just maybe, know a little bit about what they are doing.
Is the general consensus around here that the Mavs are completely pissing away an obvious opportunity and that we on a message board understand that, but that the FO doesn’t?

Schroder has some flaws, but I like his ability to slash to the basket. Would really open things up for the team.

Morris gets you nothing, because his 2nd year is a player option.
Schröder doesnt play winning basketball, He is basically Reggie Jackson. No thanks.
Keeping a big TPE has more value than signing one of the remaining FA. Except Wright

If we fuck around too long building a "team" then Luka will bolt for somewhere else. His agent is not a fan of our team. The only thing he's ever done that benefited his client that was remotely benefited us was to choose Dallas over Atlanta for Luka which was probably a good choice.

I'd take Schroeder, but OKC might not be willing to unload Westbrook and Schroeder at the same time without getting a PG in return. Otherwise, it would leave Felton as the only seasoned PG on the OKC roster.

I 100% agree, however I don’t think 1 week into free agency counts as fucking around too long, especially when they already made a big move to add KP within Luka’s first year.

He would be a Monta Ellis-type move that could actually work though. And his contract fits perfectly with the 2021 dream that fans love to talk about.
