I really thought this squad would struggle with rebounding. Glad to see I was wrong.

Yeah Luka is a huge piece. He's grabbing 26% of our defensive boards and 5% of our offensive boards by himself. That's huge from a point guard, particularly one who can turn rebounds into fastbreak points like Doncic.
KP has been fairly solid despite playing like Dirk out on the perimeter. Acyuallu
My only concern is that we need more rebounding from SF and C if we really want to stay a top-10 team.
Now our defense....that is the bigger concern. Middle of the pack isn't going to cut it.

The Athletic just put a sweet article by Saad Yousuf about intense post practice shooting competitions between Luka and KP. It has about 8 video clips and some breakdowns on what they do. I would link it but I don't think it will work.

Just heard The Athletic founder on a podcast (This Week in Startups) and was very impressed with his business model and emphasis on journalism vs. marketing/ clicks. Do you think it's worth getting a membership for primarily Mavs content?

Yes, Tim Cato's content alone is worth the price... Double-so if you're a Cowboys fan too (I've been a fan of Bob Sturm for a long time now).

I do. There is some good Mavs content. TCato and Jake Kemp are consistently good and they interact with many users. It's cool because you can select what you want highlighted and be notified about. Maybe they have a trial you could check out.

https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2019/11...in-nba-history
"Dallas is No. 1 in offensive efficiency by a mile right now, scoring 117.4 points per 100 possessions via NBA.com. That’s nearly four points better than the second best offense (the Wizards!) and nearly six points better than Houston’s No. 3 offense. Last year’s Warriors set the record for offensive efficiency with 115 points per 100 possessions. Yes, that means Doncic’s Mavs are currently the best offense in NBA history, or at least since 1973 when Basketball-Reference started tracking. (The Basketball-Reference numbers differ slightly from NBA.com but still have the Mavs as the best ever.)"

Cato is pretty good.. I prefer Jake Kemp.. Their baseball coverage of the Rangers far exceeds their Mavs basketball coverage though.. And yeah, Sturm is pretty good with the Cowboys.

They would do well to hire Bryan Broaddus now that he's free.

A couple of guys who I thought were dirt cheap this summer that could've helped the mavs
Dwight and J.Parker
I felt like dwight defensively was an excellent fit for this team and parker could have been a legitimate 3rd option
Mavs are solid but I can only imagine how much better they could've been if they didn't go all in on Powell and targeted these two guys

I thought we would be closer to 25th in defensive rating before the season, so this is nice to see.
Most of us felt like the team rebounding idea was going to produce even if Powell was in the SLU.
I thought offensively we could be good with the addition of KP but not this good this soon. Thanks Luka.

Cuban right now is claiming the Mavs are hard capped lol what a bitch. Knowing the Mavs are 18.5 Mil under the cap he refuses to go into luxury tax. Hope this doesn’t bite us in the future with keeping Luka.

Technically that’s true. I think we can use the TPE and still not trigger the tax though. We can take back a player up to that 18m, I think. Could be mistaken though...

Are you sure about this? My understanding is that the salary cap is currently $109.14 million and the Mavs' current payroll is $121,494,535.
It's hoopshype, so take it with a huge grain of salt, but it looks here like we won't be under the cap until 2021. https://hoopshype.com/salaries/dallas_mavericks/

Sportrac is slightly more reliable and it has us at 108.4 with the cap at most going to 116 (and we waive Lee, Barea, and our 2-ways)
That would give us 7.6mill in cap. That's not much.

Great piece on Luka & the Mavs... interesting notes
-THJ is defending very well
-Carlisle has made major adjustments that allow the first unit to thrive next to Luka

Where are you seeing this? I'm looking at it right now, and it looks to me like the cap is $109,140,000 and the Mavs currently have $120,391,210 in payroll. Am I reading it wrong?
EDIT: Also, for what it's worth, it very plainly says outright "This team is currently "hard-capped", which means their Total Taxable Salaries may not exceed $138,928,000 at any point during the season." So Cuban does not appear to be lying, to Melonhead's point.

Sorry, that was next season. I should have clarified
This season
Cap - 109.1million
salaries - 120.4million
tax - 132.6million
next season
Salaries - 108.4mill
Cap - 116million
Tax - 141.0 million
This year we are over the cap, but under the tax threshold. Next year we may end up slightly below the cap, but only 7.6million under (assuming we waive rights to Barea, Broekhoff, and Lee)
Cuban isn't wrong when he says we're at the cap. We are. We used the BAE and the MLE (Curry and Roby). The only two ways we can add salary are:
1.23million dollar TPE that we got in the Matthews trade (expires 1/31/2020)
and
21.3million dollar TPE we got in the Barnes trade (expires 2/7/2020)

Ah ok, makes sense. It's just as well, honestly. The free agent class this summer is pretty awful.

I don't even register those as serious responses. What a load of crock that is.
No one besides Pop has consistently done more with less than Rick. Sure he puts some wacky lineups out there, but he is often experimenting in meaningless (in the grand scheme of things) games. With those experiments comes knowledge. JJ starting in the Finals is a great example of that.
Hell, half of this forum rages out when he keeps Powell in over Maxi. I'm even guilty of questioning it sometimes. Yet Powell + Luka is currently a historically great combo statistically.
His resume is unquestionable. He has taken three completely different teams to the conference finals. He is one of a handful of coaches who has actually won a championship. He kept the Mavs reasonably competitive during several years of revolving door / 1-year contract rosters.

Yeah, this roster should be playing for 8th seed this season... Luka and Rick had other plans, and Rick deserves a lot of credit for once again getting the most out of mid-shelf talent.
