They turned Gary Trent Jr. and two 1st rd picks they traded for Cov into Keon Johnson (who is barely seeing the floor for a decimated Clippers squad) and a 2nd rd pick. Very expensive rental of Powell and Covington.

Shams Charania: Sources: The NBA has informed teams of projected salary cap and tax level in 2022-23 — $121M and $147M, both are $2M higher than previous estimates. – via Twitter ShamsCharania

Problem is the league is now on notice after Portland got fleeced. No way another lopsided trade like that happens again before the deadline.
Still think the Mavs coulda beaten that deal, but I'll hold judgement until after the deadline.

Would’ve liked Covington as small ball 4/5 in the playoffs. It may have cost us Josh Green, though Keon Johnson hasn’t shown much so far but every FO will value players differently. Clearly it was a $ move for them, similar to Houston wanting money over assets in the Harden deal. We don’t have a big “expiring” like Bledsoe. Unless they wanted THJ or we re-routed him. It’s be Maxi and Burke and Powell?

Stein saying what we all knew:
DFS and Brunson are the only guys other teams want.
Ain’t no one want Powell, THJ, Kleber, or the Browns

Like Jae Crowder? PJ Tucker started for the Bucks. Contenders often have above average defenders with one offensive skill starting.

“I hear the Mavs are calling the Kings,” said Windhorst. “They are (also) interested in Marcus Smart and John Collins, but it’s nothing I’d call Woj about (yet).”
Windhorst goes on to say that he doesn’t believe anything significant will happen for the Mavs at the deadline, but there’s always a chance since general manager Nico Harrison is apparently working the phones. Given Dallas’ roster needs, attempting a trade for both Buddy Hield and Richaun Holmes would make a lot of sense.

Holmes would be a great get. I think he’d be attainable with the little bit of assets the Mavs have. Hield probably costs too much.

No way you take on Hield and not get rid of THJ.

Too bad THJ got hurt because I imagine his contract matches up with Buddy’s pretty well. Would give the Kings a veteran shooter to help spread the floor too.

With the emergence of Simons and the selling off of veterans like Powell and Covington, rival executives around the league believe the Trail Blazers will move CJ McCollum by the trade deadline or this offseason as Portland continues to reshape its roster around franchise star Damian Lillard. Several teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and others, are expected to have interest in trading for McCollum, who is owed $69.13 million over the next two seasons. 3 hours ago – via Michael Scotto @ HoopsHype

How vital has Finney-Smith been to Dallas? The Mavericks passed on a potential late lottery pick in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, league sources told HoopsHype. There’s a sentiment around the league that Finney-Smith may be outplaying his current extension number, which is $55.6 million over four years. As noted by colleague Yossi Gozlan in a recent HoopsHype story, Finney-Smith’s current ProFitX contract value is $20.69 million. 3 hours ago – via Michael Scotto @ HoopsHype

The Mavs need to do everything they can to get Luka another legit playmaker. This guy is generational talent that is surrounded by mediocrity. I don’t care of the fit of DFS, or the emergence of Brunson, none of these guys are needle movers. We need to go all in now.

Your first mistake was Hoopshype. Not saying the Mavs don't do that, but unless Hoopshype went through some transformation...don't believe it.

They don't want future salary which could be a big issue. Probably have to bring in a third team to unload salary. Maybe get NO involved if they still like THJ.

Maybe they’d be more inclined to bring on future salary if we attach a first round pick and a young player with potential (Green or Moses)?

I'm beginning to think the Mavs are going to keep the same core and just try to use the TE on someone and wait on Dragic after the buyout.
I think Larry Nance JR (TE) + Dragic at least gives the team some more depth.
KP
Nance
DFS
Brunson
Luka
Powell
Kleber
Green
Bullock
Dragic

Beginning to think? As in, you thought they would actually make an attempt at improving when we have been playing really well? I don't believe it. I think you always knew we loved our boys in blue

Well Bullock is a game changer IF he keeps it up. The big issue, and this was no different with Seth Curry, is whether these guys can be relied on when the going gets tough.
Are Bullock, DFS, and Kleber going to make shots when it counts?
And I'm not even sure how interested in Dragic I am anymore. I feel the small amount of ppg/3 point shooting he offers would be negated by his defense. I guess he would be taking Frank's minutes which would be fine.

DFS and Kleber we know can’t be relied on in crunch playoff games. That’s why I still have some interest in Dragic if he can ramp up for the playoffs. Having another creator could be the difference.

Is 40% a good three point percentage? How about 43%?

Mavs need to find a way to Richaun Holmes. I feel like he'd be an easier get than a playmaker, shot creator at the deadline. Would love Buddy Hield, but I dont see that happening.

Lol Buddy is a streakier, shittier version of THJ with a worse attitude and bigger contract. No thanks.

What about bringing Harrison Barnes back? He might have a high price tag though.
DFS/THJ for Barnes works. That's a high price, but it might be worth it to shed THJ and you still have Barnes for next season.

I think the Mavs should push some chips in. If you could really get a lottery pick for DFS, you should do that deal, and package that pick with whatever salary Detroit is willing to take on for Jerami Grant. Maybe even add one of our own future firsts if it gets Olynyk too.
I'd love for the Mavs to mostly stand pat and get Nance and Dragic without giving up anything super significant, but I don't see it happening. I think we should make a real move for a capable PF.

I think Nance fits into our TE. He’d be a nice pickup. And I agree with moving DFS for a lottery pick. I’d then try and package that first for something more significant. Throw in anyone not named Luka if you can land a bigger fish.

Nance Jr. would be a great pickup. Another long wing defender with size and strength. Nance can also be a playmaker on the short roll, we don’t really have anyone who can do that currently. It would add another wrinkle to the playbook.

I’d hang onto Dorian unless we KNOW we have a deal lined up for a star with picks. He’s a culture guy and really sets the tone for this team. I have been all for collecting assets in the past but I can’t get past what it would say to our guys to send out DFS for unknowns. They’ve been mostly balling out for over a month, the recent two game blip excepted.

I keep coming back to Portland. CJ and Nance would help SO much. I think we’re low key contenders with good health from KP, another switchy front-court guy (Nance or Thad Young) and another creator like CJ. If there is a deal with Portland where you kill two birds with one stone and take Nance into TPE they almost have to go for it. It would kill me to ship off Josh Green. And I don’t think they’d have any interest in THJ, though he makes less than CJ so they save even more $. I think other teams can beat our offer unless we can re-route a draft pick in a 3-way. We could really use a large expiring contract about now.

I've said before that DFS is such a huge piece to what Dallas does on defense. No one else on this roster is as versatile as him defensively. If they were getting someone like Jerami Grant sure but if you're not getting another wing defender to replace him then I think this defense overall will take a significant hit because I don't think Bullock or Green are as versatile as DFS on that end of the floor.
Atlanta game was a prime example when he defended Tra Young very well
Finney-Smith, meanwhile, has also shown underrated consistency throughout his sixth NBA season.
The latest example: He played a game-high 42 minutes Sunday night against the Hawks and had to “guard everybody,” Kidd said afterward, as the Mavericks held All-Star point guard Trae Young to 17 points (6 of 19 shooting) and the Hawks’ No. 2-rated offense to 94 points.

I'm meh on CJ but if theybwant to dump some salary THJ and DP who drops off after next season might be a route for them. Its not enough straight up talent wise but maybe some fluff around it gets them to the table. We haven't really missed THJ but we would need to get someone like Nance to replace DP.

Pels are getting CJ for Hart and draft compensation per Shams. I'm sure the Mavs didn't have the draft capital to make the deal.

Curious to see what kind of draft picks they had to give up. Does Dame request a trade now, or wait to see what they can re-tool and build around him with?

A future first and two future seconds. NO also gets Nance jr, so you can cross him off the wishlist.
