Jamal Lewis sets single game rushing record
Jamal Lewis sets rushing record
September 14, 2003
Jamal Lewis mentioned setting the NFL rushing record against Cleveland, then ran through the Browns for 295 yards in Baltimore's 33-13 victory at home Sunday.
Earlier in the week, Lewis told Browns linebacker Andra Davis he might smash Corey Dillon's 278-yard mark. With touchdowns bursts of 82 and 63 yards, he did just that, breaking the record with a 3-yard run with 6:55 left.
``Andra told me he wanted me to get the ball 30 times,'' Lewis said. ``I told him if I get the ball 30 times it's going to be a career day.
``I'm not going to say I predicted it. It was lucky.''
Lewis had 100 yards by his second carry and was at 180 yards by halftime. He carried 30 times, averaging a whopping 9.8 yards per carry, as Cleveland fell to 0-2.
Last October, he shredded Cleveland for 187 yards.
Ed Reed returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play, and long-range kicker Wade Richey made a Ravens-record 56-yardfield goal.

Very cool. I was hoping he'd get 300 but it didn't happen.

I didn't see the game, but I read that he had a 60-yd run called back for a holding penalty
Yet, he still managed amazing numbers.

Well it's according to scoring. Shaun Alexander (on Nov. 11, 2001) gained 266 yards with 3 touchdowns. Lewis just had 2 touchdowns. And Corey Dillon had a 246 yard day with 4 TDs on Dec. 4, 1997. James Stewart had 5 touchdowns in one game Oct 12th, 1997. Jerry Rice also had 5 touchdowns on Oct 14, 1990.

Did anyone hear him give credit to his offensive line? All the long runs I saw were up the middle or off tackle runs.
I did'nt hear him say anything but egotistical chatter.

Gotta love that when you have him on both your fantasy teams His rookie qb scares me for the long run though. Can you say 10 men in the box?

You gotta love Cleveland with two high number 1 picks on the defensive line giving up 295 rushing to Lewis. Both Warren and the Penn State kid look like busts for being top 2 picks. Also, Campo knows how to get his teams off an running. Duce Staley gets 200+ a couple of years ago in Campo's first game and now in his second game with Cleveland, Lewis gets 295.
In all fairness...Campo is a fine defensive coach, but he was clearly over his head as an head coach.

Dale Hansen's comment last night was priceless. Said he opened up his DMN and read about what a great defensive job Campo was doing in Cleveland. He then shows clips over and over of Jamal Lewis running. It was pretty funny.

Campo has seen this act before. He went for 187 against Dallas in 2000. Of course, if a back didn't get 200 on us that year, he must not have been very good.

RE: Jamal Lewis sets single game rushing record
rod, i didn't hear anything about the line except that ogden told him at halftime that they would try for 300. he ran through some pretty big holes. granted, he did break some tackles, but that line opened it up for him.

Jamal Lewis sets single game rushing record
The last times the record have been broken was by 2 yards, then 3. Jamal Lewis shattered the record by 27 yards, even after getting a 60 yard run called back for holding.
One thing to Corey Dillons' credit though, who had the record last, he averaged 12 yards per carry when he broke it, carrying the ball only 22 times. Lewis had 30 carries for 9.8 yards a carry.

RE: Jamal Lewis sets single game rushing record
i think the 60 yard hold was from the spot of the hold, so lewis got credit for 48 yards on that run (i think that's what they said on sportscenter)

A word to the wise: Don't think what you see on Sportscenter is everything....they don't show the entire press conference on shows like that.....next time, before you're so quick to judge a player, check the transcripts.....this quote is from the USA Today article on Monday.
"The line did a great job," Lewis said. "But one reason you get the big runs is because of the blocking downfield. And everybody chipped in."

RE: Jamal Lewis sets single game rushing record
no one was judging him, we just asked if he said anything about the line. because what we saw was simply "egotistical chatter." and you provided us with a quote. thanks.

If you run for 295, you've got a right to have an ego....as long as you thank the people who helped you get there, which Lewis did.
