Default Troy Murphy

(Taken from the San Jose Mercury News)

It's hard to picture this beast knocking down 3's. Yes, it would certainly open things up for him.

Mullin reports the coaching staff's request that gym-rat power forward Troy Murphy expand his shooting range to three-point distance has produced gold.

``He's there -- it's not like he's working at it, he's at it,'' said Mullin, who has joined Murphy at the team's practice site all summer. ``He's knocking them down consistently. And what I've told him is to use it, but not just live there. It'll open things up for him.''

Murphy attempted only 14 three-pointers last season (making three).

He's not that good of a shooter, so he shouldn't try it during the season. Shooting in practice, and shooting in a regular season game are two different things

yeah, but i think the point of this, nash13, is that he has worked to become a better shooter. they're not just saying "shoot more 3's." they want him to become better at shooting 3's, which they believe he has done.

I get the Warrior's point of view, but he should work on his all around shooting instead of just his threes.

the key is to expand his range as a shooter. not to just live out at the three-point line. the statement, "And what I've told him is to use it, but not just live there. It'll open things up for him" sums it up. it will open up his game.

Murph is a great player, but I can't ever imagine him suprpassing Jamison at 30%. I think they just want Murphy to have more range, because they expect Dunleavy to be the answer to a lot of problems including passing, and they want someone who can finish an assist. The only thing about Murph is his hands. They are enormous! He can easily grab one handed rebounds, so his shooting stroke is going to be a little awkward from distance. He needs to keep dunking it IMO, but hey if you were nearly a playoff team and then get on board to win 10 fewer games the next season....well go for it....might as well

Warriors need all the shooters they can get, so good for him for expanding his range.

Well I watched some of their games as the season went along and you could pretty much tell he expanded his range as the season went on. It wouldn't be farfetched to me to see Troy taking and making the 3 next season.

Trust me when you are a decent shooter pressure becomes second hand, he is in his 3rd year? This will make him a decent threat everywhere on the court.

Could this be a sign of his taking over the team? Dirk?

I think Murphy is like Dirk. He's going into the off season with something to improve on and he'll come back the next season better at it. He did it the last off season with rebounding. They had him do drills all summer long and he came back a better rebounder this past season.

This strategy isn't to turn him into a 3-point specialist, but to expand his shot range, and to be a threat from outside as well as in.

Sock, I said the same thing to OP. I think this season we'll see Murphy emerge as the leader of that team. I think they build around him and they go as far as he carries them. It will take another year or two to get all the right pieces (and gel) but he will carry the team.
