I'm sure some will celebrate this but I think it's a shame. I hate to see players injured.

Miami's Alonzo Mourning leaves game with apparent knee injury

ATLANTA (AP) -- Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning appeared to injure his right knee in a collision with Atlanta's Mario West in the first quarter on Wednesday night.

With Mourning laying on his back clutching his knee, a stretcher was brought to his side. Mourning was placed on the stretcher and then sat up, rose to his feet and limped to the Miami bench with the assistance of teammates.

There was no immediate report on Mourning's injury.

Alonzo Mourning's career is in jeopardy after the Heat center tore the patella tendon in his right knee against the Hawks.

He's expected to be out at least 6 months. At his age you would think he'd retire but we'll see.

He'll be 38 when and if he recovers. But Parrish played till something like 42, and Mourning may be able to do that, too, given the style of game he plays. If he has the desire, I'm sure he has the quality of medical care to get past the injury and play a few more years.

I know alot here didn't want him when we courted him years ago but I did. Although the late great poster PoindexterEinstein(?) had me convinced it was good that we didn't get him until he actually started playing.

I feel bad for the guy. He is definitely a Warrior.

Too bad. He's a pretty quality human being....besides that god awful uniform he wears. my prayers for his knee and his family....though, something tell me they'll be fine.

Didn't seem like much of a collision. Looked more like Mourning was just trying to get back quickly on a fast break.

There wasn't any contact. His knee just gave out. Sad news.

if it was his shoulder instead of his knee, do you think he would have accepted a wheelchair?

agreed. There was no contact, his knee like popped out of place, and he fell down.

then he started punching the ground like it was the floors fault.

ATLANTA -- Alonzo Mourning refused to leave what might have been the last game of his career on a stretcher.

After tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee in Miami's game against Atlanta on Wednesday night, the 37-year-old Heat center was placed on the stretcher, but he refused the ride.

Alonzo Mourning (33) tore the patellar tendon in his right knee against Atlanta, but refused to be taken off the court on a stretcher.

"That's not the way I envisioned myself walking off the court for the last time in my career," he said. "I've been through so much in my life. If I had to crawl off the court I would have. Nobody was going to push me off on a stretcher off the court. That wasn't going to happen."

Mourning already has said there is "zero chance" of playing another season.

"We tried to help him up and he just said 'It's over, it's over,"' Miami's Udonis Haslem said.

Mourning sat up, rose to his feet and limped to the Miami bench with the assistance of teammates. He received an ovation as he made the slow, painful walk to the bench.

Miami spokesman Michael Lissack said an examination at Philips Arena, including X-rays, revealed the injury. Mourning will have more tests Thursday with team physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick, including an MRI.

"Dr. Selesnick will let me know tomorrow," said Mourning, who was on crutches after the game. "But obviously it's going to require some kind of surgical procedure. And it'll be done as soon as possible."

Lissack said it wasn't immediately known if the injury could end Mourning's season.

Injuries such as this typically take at least three months to heal.

When asked about Mourning's outlook, Heat coach Pat Riley said "I think we should really wait on that. But it's not good."

"I'd never put anything past Zo. But the knee injury is ... sad for me because I know him. I've been really close to him. It's sad to see him really be hurt."

Mourning is in his 15th year in the NBA, including 11 seasons with Miami.

Mourning was hurt when attempting to defend the basket on a layup by Atlanta's Mario West. Replays showed Mourning's knee buckled without contact from West as Mourning was about to jump.

"When I planted I felt like my foot slipped," Mourning said. "It happened so fast though. It really did. I didn't even watch the tape. From what everybody else told me that was watching it, they said it looked like I slipped."

Mourning is a seven-time All-Star and two-time defensive player of the year.

His 15 years in the league do not include a full year he missed because of kidney problems that led to him getting a transplant in 2003.

"Each of you here know I've been through a whole lot worse than this," Mourning said. "It's disappointing to even think that my career would end this way, but there are so many other things that life has to offer for me. I have a great family and I have so many other opportunities out there.

One of the all time great centers in this league. This guy really is a warrior on the court and a good human being off the court. If ever there was some kind of positive spin to us losing that NBA Finals to Miami it's that he got a championship out of it. How fitting that his career was made playing defense, and his career will have come to an end playing defense.

I thought that mourning was as big (if not bigger) reason for the heat winning that series. He was really tough in there.

He earned my respect. I thought that Dampier outplayed shaq, but not mourning.

Miami Herald - Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning, out since December 19 with a torn patella tendon in his right knee and a torn quadriceps in the same leg, said in an interview with the team website Monday that he has decided to retire.

Mourning had already announced in July that the 2007-2008 season would be his final one in the NBA, and after suffering his injuries while attempting to block a shot in the first period of Miami's December 19 game at Atlanta, the 16-year veteran has opted not to try and rehab himself for another season.

"Yes. I'm retired," Mourning said. "This is it for me."

Mourning averaged 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in 24 games for Miami before his injury. For his career, Mourning has averaged 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 837 games with the Charlotte Hornets , New Jersey Nets and Miami.

Shortly after those comments appeared on several wire services, Heat spokesman Tim Donovan said, "A mistake was made and it's not an accurate story and it's been pulled, with our apologies."

I am sure the someone with the Heat or Zo screwed up big time.

There are salary cap and insurance considerations to keep in mind here.
Like they may be able to trade his expiring contract in a deal or the
Heat's insurance can pick up or cover a portion of what he is owed.

At least he didn't leave the court in a wheelchair ala Wade.
