Iverson Traded to Detroit
The Denver Nuggets are expected to trade Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess, Pistons team sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.
The deal has not been finalized.
This would be the second time Iverson has been traded in two years. He was dealt by Philadelphia to Denver in December 2006, kicked out of Philly over irreconcilable differences as part of a package that brought Andre Miller to the 76ers.
Stephen A. Smith covers the NBA for ESPN.

No link yet but they reported it on ESPN radio. I believe McDyess is involved too.

That's weird. Wasn't really expecting that.

Wow. So A.I.'s back in the east and we'll be seeing Chauncey in a Nuggets uni. Wow. This season is getting more interesting by the minute. I wonder what'll happen next? Shaq to LA for Ariza , Odom and Farmar? LOL

This looks like a salary dump to me. Dispite the big name Iverson has more value to DET as an expiring contract. If they let Rasheed walk they have a chance to be under the cap next year.

Damn, that's a great trade for Denver.
Dirno, I agree it looks like a salary dump for Detroit. Make another run this season and if it doesn't work out you have some options next summer.

Something I got from another board:
Quote:
What is interesting is the Pistons have shedded major salary for 2010. As of right now, they only have Stuckey, Prince, Affalo and Maxiell under contract for 2010. Combined they make roughly 22 million dollars."
They are going to be huge players in the 2010 free agency (the one with Lebron, Bosh, Wade, etc) and they have those very 4 solid players still on the roster.
|
The deal didn't really make a lot of sense from Detroit's perspective until I read that. It's going to be weird seeing Iverson in Detroit. He just doesn't really seem like the type of player that fits the kind of ball they play.

This trade doesn't make sense...
Why didn't any of these guys end up in Dallas? (because that's the only trade that makes sense to MY mind!)

Definitely a plan for the future for Detroit. 21 million expiring in AI and 14 million expiring in Sheed.
This is a good move for Denver because this gives them leadership at the PG, pushes JR into the starting lineup, and adds depth to the front court.
Detroit
Iverson/Stucky
Rip/Affalo
Prince/Hermann
Amir/Maxiell
Sheed/Maxiell/Kwame
still can compete for a playoff spot in the East while getting close to 40 million dollars worth of expiring contracts off the books for next summer.
Denver
Billups/Carter/Atkins
JR/Jones
Carmelo/Balkman
Kenyon/Linas
Nene/McDyess
As a Mavs fan, this could be bad news for us.

I personally think the Kidd led Mavs struggle more against an AI led team than a Chauncey led team.

I was totally caught off guard when I saw this trade. Came out of nowhere. I don't think either team will really be better from it. Maybe Denver, but they've been underacheiving for years. Detroit looks like a salary situation.

Does this really make Denver much better? I've always liked what Chauncey brought to the table, but AI is clearly the better player.

It's not really about being the better individual player though.
Without a doubt, AI>Chauncey. But, with THAT team? Maybe Chauncey can be the missing link?

He may be the better player but he's not the better PG.

I like the deal. Mcdyess and Billups to a Denver team that needed interior defense help and a point guard. JR Smith is going to be a beast in this league. I'm sure him developing is what kicked AI off the team. Who else puts up 15 points a game 6 rebounds and 2 assists off the bench? He should've been a starter but AI on the team couldn't allow that. Adding BIllups is a upgrade. I like the move. Pistons......I actually like it for them too. They needed a go to guy and AI is just that. But I don't understand giving up Billups to get that. Seems like it would make more sense to get rid of RIP who's a solid compliment but is not the go to guy they want. Maybe its for salary cap reasons?

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but this was my initial thought. They're rolling with Stuckey after this season.

AI is the better distributor and thief...not so entirely sure Chancey is clearly a better pg. Defensively he is a better on the ball defender than AI.
I know the popular opinion is that AI is not a solid PG, but I'm not sure I buy it. He is certainly not the conventional pass first pg, but neither is CB.

Pure marketing ploy by Detroit... They've had the same names for over 5 years now. With Iverson now on the Roster they will sell millions upon millions of jerseys. Plus Iverson looks good in any jersey.

Don't think I agree with that either. He's a much better scorer and just as good of a passer. He's not as good on D because he's so undersized, but that's about it.

You have to have a pg to win in the west. Denver needed a pg. I am not taking anything away from Iverson or Anthony but playing Stackhouse ball, bombs away usualy won't get you thru the playoffs. Denver was a bombs away Stackhouse team and they didn't care much for playing defense and just who gets the ball first, jack it up. Iverson, Anthony wasn't going to work from the start and Denver needed a pg as bad as we need a sg and back up pg. Billups is a good pg. Can Denver settle down and play Detroit basketball? Not sure about this because they refuse to play defense but Billups can bring them easier and more paint points. Iverson in Detroit, interesting. No comment at this point.

I feel that Chauncey Billups lost a step. He also went from the most underrated player in the NBA to the most overrated player in the NBA in one offseason a couple of years ago. Detroit always had trouble scoring..and in crunch time (Billups was NOT that clutch besides that playoff run a few years back)...Iverson brings that to the table. With Detroit I feel that AI can gamble a bit more..playing the passing lanes and such. They have other players commited to playing defense to make up for his on the ball mistakes.
Detroit gets alot of cap flexibility, get to showcase Stuckey, Amir Johnson, and Jason Maxiell more. They are looking to the future, retaining younger talent, but also contending today.
Why the fk didn't the Mavs go with this game plan. SIGH.

I think it's great for Detroit. It's like a better version of the Kidd deal. They shake things up this season, and if it doesn't work well, they let all that salary fall off the books, and have a head start on rebuilding.
On the other hand, what the hell is Denver doing? They gave away Camby for luxury tax purposes, and now they're going to pay Billups pretty big money well into his 30's.
And not only that, they're going to buy out McDyess even though he's owed another 7 mil next season? What on earth?
I mean, I think Billups makes them significantly better right away, but significantly better for them (without Camby) means they now have a decent shot at the 8 seed.
I just don't get it.

If we had held on to Devin Harris this long I think we could of been the ones landing Billups/McDyess, which would of been great.
