With this lineup our ability to space is going to be very limited. Hope to see our money better spent.

Aside from Melo or Lebron, what is everyones dream lineups now for next season? Anyone make less sense now (deng)?
I for one am expecting Wright to be on the market pretty soon. He has sell high value right now, and there is no foreseeable way he increases his value in the next few years as he is more of a PF and won't see enough minutes behind Dirk. I am not quite sure on what other teams value him at... any rumors? I would think Wright+1st rounders could get us quite abit.
Last but not least I wanted some information about D.J. Augustin. Any idea on the price tag he might come with, and if his game could translate to Carlisle's system? I know he's not a sexy pickup like Lowry or Bledsoe, but I think there could be something there.

Legler seems to think Knicks look better in the trade. He's very high on Calderón and very low on felton. And him and another guy really like Larkins potential. Conversation was more geared towards knicks however, not mavs

Both teams can honestly win a trade. Also, no one is big on Felton as a piece. He's a contract.
Still, Calderon may be great-- he was 5th in 3pt shooting last year and 1st the year before. He's just a one-dimensional player that actually made us worse both on defense AND on offense (hurt our pp100).
Larkin is also another one-way player who has yet to learn how to flop like JJB and thus killed us on both opposing jumpers and opposing drives. I love his motor and his skillset, but he's always at least going to be a defensive liability
Ellington was salary fodder that benefitted us. The trade worked without him, but allowed us to shed 2.5mill. He's a guy who is decently talented but couldnt play more than 400 min all year.
Chandler was honestly the biggest piece and we got one top-10 center that fits our system/philosophy for a mismatched piece and a couple of spare parts. Getting him alone made this trade at least a win for us.

Not including the first 10 games of last season before he was traded, here's a general comparison between Augustin and Calderon...
D.J. Augustin: 14.9 PPG / .419 FG% / .411 3P% / 5.0 APG / 1.9 TO
Jose Calderon: 11.4 PPG / .456 FG% / .449 3P% / 4.7 APG / 1.3 TO
He's not as good of a shooter as Calderon, but he's still deadly enough from beyond the arc to help us stretch the floor... Plus, he's a decent defender for an undersized guy - he's quick and can stay in front of his man. Sounds like Chicago wants him back, but he's expected to make somewhere in the $6-8m range, so they probably won't pay that much for a backup. But he should be an easier get than Lowry or Bledsoe, and at the price we'd still have enough money to sign someone like Ariza outright.

You think? I just read he's expected to get a deal similar to Patty Mills.
If he's going for that little, then I don't see any reason why we wouldn't want him.

Now I have only been reading up on this recently, but I think the current estimation is closer to 6 million to be honest. Heres an excerpt that made sense to me from Wally Jacobs @ Ransports.com:
Quote:
Last season, reserve free agent guards who played a similar backup role as Augustin include Will Bynum and Nate Robinson. Bynum ended up re-signing with the Detroit Pistons for $5.7 million, and at the same time, Robinson signed with the Denver Nuggets for two years, $4 million. While both players had similar numbers in their respective roles—both scoring in double figures with a handful of assists—they also signed contracts being around their thirties. On the other hand, Mills is only 25 while Augustin is 26.
In a league where age means everything, Mills and Augustin might command a little more money. Also, with Mills recently winning the championship, several teams might want to scoop him up quickly. With all of that said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mills sign a contract worth in the neighborhood of $6-8 million. Augustin could also be the one to set the price for other reserves, but the Spurs are usually loyal to those players who have helped them win in the past, so Mills’ contract could be finalized first.
|
The more I look into Augustin the more I think he could be a real possibility. Assuming Melo is not coming to Dallas, there is a chance Chicago could be strapped for cash. Augustin and Harris would be a nice 1-2 punch, and neither is the defensive liability that Calderon was. They aren't quite the floor spacers either, but I think this could be a decent fit if we got him around 5 million per (he's still only 26). It sounds like the Mavs are ok with using Harris + Felton as of now, but I wonder if that will change if we don't end up landing Melo or Lebron. We would have the room to easily make this deal for Augustin, resign the rest of our rotation, and pursue the likes of Ariza, Parsons, or Stephenson (Yes I am openly pushing for him now, go figure). Augustin lacks size, but he is still a scrappy defender who would not be a liability coming off the bench. He is a high FT and better career 3PT shooter than the likes of Ariza (who the rest of the crowd here seems to like best for our 3 spot).
A lineup of:
Harris/Augustin
Ellis/Carter
Ariza/Crowder
Dirk/Wright/
Chandler/Okafor
We could see bout Felton getting some minutes in there or possibly package him in with Wright and future firsts. Sounds like a pretty strong team to me.

Should we look at Mario Chalmers for cheap for some PG help after trading Jose?? I know he had a bad Finals but he's better than Felton, and younger

Mavericks still interested in Pau Gasol
Quote:
The Mavs believe the trade for Tyson Chandler increases their odds of reeling in one of the big fish, but sources told ESPNDallas.com that it did not eliminate their interest in Gasol.
Landing James or Anthony is the Mavs’ clear-cut priority, and there’d be no room left for Gasol if they were successful. However, the two-time champion with the Lakers could factor into the Mavs’ backup plans, in free agency and on the floor next season.
It’s unknown whether Gasol would be willing to come off the bench at the age of 34, but it’s feasible to project him playing about 28 minutes per game for the Mavs. The Mavs don’t want Nowitzki averaging more than 32 minutes, so Gasol could play 16 minutes per game at power forward. He’d likely get another dozen or so minutes at center, maybe more against certain matchups.
The way the Mavs’ rotation is structured, Gasol and Nowitzki could play some together against opposing second units, diminishing the concerns about their flaws as a defensive duo.
The Mavs would hope to get Gasol, who averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season, for about $8 million per year.

The FO rumours are that they say no to Stephenson and that they are high on Deng and i think nothing changed. Deng is the #2 at the SF position after Melo.
I think they would maybe try to squeeze Dirk, Deng, Gasol and Harris into the cap.

Other than Chandler/Felton talk, the Gasol rumor is the first thing I've heard, post-trade... Probably won't hear too much until closer to July 1st.

Harris/Felton
Ellis/Crowder
Deng/Carter
Nowitzki/Gasol
Chandler/Wright
I could live with that...

Probably would have to stretch Felton in this scenario...the actual ~27m cap for Dirk/Gasol/Deng and the 3m for Harris via Feltons reduced salary.

The problem with this is we literally have zero people to space the floor. Deng is just an incredibly bad fit imo.

I just don't see Deng as the #2 best SF available for our team. I mean who on our team is going to be a threat from the outside on a regular basis with Deng at the 3?
I mean at this point is it even debatable that Deng is a poor fit for us?
Edit: Want to point out in regards to Stephenson alot has changed since Dallas initially said no they aren't interest. He continued his antics in the playoffs against the Heat and has been trending down heavily since. There is a chance Stephenson could be viewed as a value pickup much like Monta last year.

I'm still in favor of taking a good look at Lance Stevenson. The kid has star potential and is bull dog on the defensive end.
Unless Rick is the one saying no, I would trust Carlisle to get his head on straight.

I think everything is going to be really quite on the Stephenson rumors until free agency starts. He is too talented of a player to not be on a few teams radars, but I think in comparison to some of the other players who are being talked about here I think he could be the best value.

I sure hope they choose Ariza or Deng if no Melo ....Ariza or Melo's 3 point shooting is needed now without Caleron . Deng wont help that

First 8 seasons 317-999 3PA .317 3P%
Last 2 Seasons 256-651 3PA .393 3P%
I'm not buying his last 2 years 251 Made Threes are a fluke ...Have you ever considered he just got better ?
Even if Ariza .400% was a fluke I think he can easily put up .360% which is better than Deng
