Lol.... I hadn't read your post. That was good and my example was better.
Hey man...don't trash the Bonzai. That movie tops the list of movies that are so terrible that they are great.

Has anyone seen Shaggy's cat? I'm feeling pretty frisky after watching Batman again...

Too many great and profound quotes to choose from, but this has to be my favorite...it is so moving...

Poison Ivy: Just what I had in mind. Everything dead on earth, except us. A chance for Mother Nature to start again. Behold, the dawn of a new age. My mutant plants have the strength of the deadliest animals. Once you have frozen mankind, these babies will overrun the globe, and we shall rule them, for we will be the only two people left in the world.

My cat is doing just fine....I found it for the log_3 (19683) time. Very fitting for the obvious reasons. This time my cat was in the crawl space of my neighbor's aunt's son's tree house. Apparently, my cat was trying to circumvent the fact that there was no crawl space. I can only conclude that my cat has skills. But, we already knew that. Especially, chum, who has attempted to kill my cat with various medieval weaponry.

Just got back from seeing it, and I have to say I agree with pretty much your entire review. Including your critiques of individual scenes.

Good movie, not great.

Bane's voice - of all the voices in the world they could go with, they choose a horrible (almost cartoony) Sean Connery impersonation. Couple that with bale's Batman voice, and you wonder if Nolan might be deaf. How could he think that sounds good?

And I agree bane spoke waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. Not only was it more of the ridiculous voice, there is nothing interesting about watching a guy with a mask talk. Hardy's eyes were expressive, yes, but for that much monologue, we need to see the mouth.

I liked hathaway in this (especially hunched over on the bat-cycle - MEOW!), and Caine was great as well.

And just to go comic nerd for a second (and yes, I know Nolan really isn't concerned with being faithful to the comic) - i think they should have used bane's venom. Not all ridiculous like in the Schumacher movie, but something subtle, like venom being similar to a steroid or adrenaline. I think it could have worked.

And John "Robin" Blake? Seriously? They couldn't have used any of the Robins' real names? That would have been far less cheesy.

Anyway, not shitting on the movie overall, cause I did like it. It just didn't feel like a Batman movie.

I find it interesting that so many comic book fans are upset about the "Robin" thing at the end. You're basically asking for an inside joke amongst comic book readers, and leaving the vast majority of the audience with a giant, distracted question mark wondering if they missed something important in that scene.

I'm not really upset - I would just have rather they left a "robin" connection out of the movie entirely than have some guy whose actual name is robin. To me, having a guy named robin is a cheaper ploy to make a casual moviegoer say "OMG! His name is Robin!"

Keep John Blake in the movie - he was interesting and JGL did a fine job. But leave out the Robin connection, or name him Richard (Dick) from the start.

Heck, his name could have been Richard Blake (to keep the "reveal" a secret. Then that same scene could have played out the same way - woman can't find his bag, he says "use my parents' name - Grayson." Since it was established he was an orphan, this would work. If a casual movie-goer doesn't understand, I don't think it matters. The point they need to understand is just that Wayne left the bat cave to somebody.

I'm fine if they leave the scene out completely. But you can't have the scene and use the name Grayson, imo. It leaves too many people in the dark and confused as to why that name doesn't mean anything to them. That's fine to do in a teaser during or after the credits, like Avengers, but I don't think you can do it in the main movie. It's too distracting.

And more than anything, I was just pointing out that I think the general comic book reader seems to think that Dick Grayson is so well known that it would have only confused a minority share of people. And I don't think that's the case at all.

I'm not expecting casual movie-goers to recognize the name "Dick Grayson". My point is that it doesn't matter what his name is. To the casual person, it's a throwaway line. To the people that know, it's a good reference.

All the causal person needs to know is what follows - that wayne gave him directions to the batcave.

I do think the robin connection should have been dropped completely - even it played out the way i described (with Grayson), it would still feel cheap.

I'll tell you what distracted me, for basically the entire movie. The opening plane scene where Bane transfers the Dr.'s blood to the corpse. I understand why they did it (so people would think that the Dr. died in the crash through blood evidence), but would that even work? Seems like it was barely enough blood to transfer. Not to mention dental records, other DNA, etc.

Total nitpick, i know, but i just could not stop thinking about it.

About 5-10 minutes into the movie, I told the person I was with that Bane's voice was going to ruin it for me.

It didn't actually ruin it, but man, that was hard to listen to.

For me, it was the first time he spoke, with the bag over his head. I actually laughed.

not only was it cartoony, but also very hard to understand at many parts.

I've heard this complaint a lot, but I had absolutely no problem with his voice... Nothing wrong with the accent and he was wearing a mask over his mouth - I mean, what was he supposed to sound like?

I've also heard people complain that it was hard to understand him, but I understood every single word of dialogue... Maybe it's because I saw it in IMAX with a crystal-clear sound system? I'm sure his voice could sound muddled if the theater mix was too bassy.

It was fine in increments, but man, when he had to explain to Gotham what was going on...brutal. The head actions didn't help, either.

I found this video interesting concerning the voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTLRKhQk4Ho

Apparently fans didn't like the voice in the prologue so they complained and Nolan altered it. Here is the video that shows the prologue voice that was viewed back in December versus the final cut. The first is better but hard to understand.

nice comparison of the two. I like the original better myself. Plus there were many lines I missed even in the final cut.

Like BBL said...it was cartoony. I thought it sounded absolutely ridiculous and made him far less intimidating. Some of the lines didn't sound so terrible, but about half the time I was almost laughing. It took me out of the moment quite a bit.

Having watched the video DHWS posted above, the original voice was far more intimidating and appropriate IMO (although harder to understand).

The list of not-real/cartoony/comic-booky things that happened in all three of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies is lengthy... But that's comic book movies for you. I don't know why people are treating the latest Batman flick like it should have been some sort of brilliant masterpiece when none of the other ones were (although I'm fairly certain that this goes back to the fact that people have ridiculously overrated the Dark Knight, which I'm betting had everything to do with Heath Ledger's excellent performance/untimely death...)

For me, nothing has been nearly as overtly cartoony and distracting as the Bane voice. It's the kind of voice I'd expect to hear on the Batman animated series I used to watch with a Coke and pretzels after getting home from 4th grade. I can't say that about anything else from the series.

I agree though that none of them is a brilliant masterpiece. I thought all three were good, not great, and the second one was carried by a "generational performance" (aptly described above by a wiser man than I).

I felt the exact same way about Two Face - his ridiculously unrealistic face almost ruined the Dark Knight for me (should've kept the cheese cloth over it until a shadowy reveal at the end, but that's just my opinion...)

So, yeah, I guess we all have different things about those movies that we like to nitpick - but all three were still good movies in my opinion.

Nothing is more cartooney than the BatCycle spinning wheels. Come now. THAT is the kind of thing ripped right from a cartoon, to me.

I liked the Bane voice. But movies are very subjective things. Which is why it's probably best not to yell about them too much.

Correct, i by no means am saying this was not a good movie. I enjoyed it, acting was solid. Especially Roethlisbegrer.

I have my nitpicks, it dragged in some places, etc., but it's not like i regretted my ticket purchase.

Even worse than Bane's voice is Bale's Batman voice, but that's been going on for 3 full movies now, so it almost goes without saying.

Oh forgot one other moment that caused a massive eyeroll - batman is being chased by the entire Gotham police force, they converge on him EXACTLY at the one alley where he stashed the bat copter thing.

Ha ha I did mention that. Either Nolan is deaf or just afraid of bale.

I always thought the point of Batman's growl was to disguise his voice, and therefore his identity - just like the mask...

Um, it's not possible that the Goddamn Batman actually led his pursuers there so he could escape?

It makes some sense as a plot point, but again I consistently found it to be so distracting that it took me out of the moment. I'd hope that most audience members could suspend disbelief with him using his normal voice, like all the previous Batmans did.

(To say nothing of the Clark Kent phenomenon, and most other superheroes in modern movies.)

This obviously isn't some substantive criticism I have of the movies--it's no big deal. But it did affect the immersion a bit for me.

Yes - for the ones following him. I'm talking about the cops converging on him from the opposite direction. Timed perfectly so that he squeeks into the alley right as the mass of cars meet.

If it was just the cars following him, would not have gotten an eye roll.

Just got back from three weeks in Europe, (most amazing trip of my life) thinking about seeing the new Batman movie, is it any good?

Sorry Shaggy, but I was so trolling!
