Not Dr. Bio. GermanBlitzkrieg Posted very little, read all the time. Plus, some people took offense to the name, so having a chance to change is probably for the better. Underdog makes a point that there will be many free agents next year, some that are considered better centers. To me, all the more reason why a team shouldn't make an offer. Have a chance to get him cheap next year. What Underdog points out, should be Dallas's selling point this year. Take the sure money, probably a better deal than you can get next year.

Who is this mysterious Dr. Bio? A maker of homeopathic remedies? Does he wear a false moustache. Is he tied to the BALCO scandal? Is he an alias of the rapper Kool Keith?

Some people...like pretty much every german poster here...or Dirk himself. That nick was neither funny or creative etc. Good that you got rid of it.

He’s unemployed at the moment, but think Nerlens Noel misses playing for the Philadelphia 76ers?? “NAH.” It was that simple when we asked the 23-year-old about his old squad outside of Warwick nightclub in L.A. last night, where he was partying until 2 in the morning.

Quote:
The Nerlens Noel situation is driving us all crazy
Dallas still hasn’t signed its self-designated top off-season priority yet, and it’s making everyone a bit thirsty.
There’s that famous Seinfeld bit where Kramer stumbles into getting a line in a Woody Allen movie, and he goes over the line with the group. George has taken on a job of parking cars and is of course going nuts and doing a terrible job.
After Jerry, Kramer and Elaine say George’s interpretation of the line “these pretzels are making me thirsty” isn’t any good, he loses it and screams the line out the window in frustration over the sounds of all the honking cars because of his poor parking job.
That’s how myself and I’d assume most of Mavs fandom feels about this Nerlens Noel situation. I want to go to downtown Dallas and scream at the top of my lungs “THIS NERLENS NOEL SITUATION IS MAKING ME CRAZY.” We’re all slowly losing it.
For good reason too! Noel was the top priority for the Mavs this summer and that’s not just me saying that, look what happens when you Google “Nerlens Noel top priority”:
Heading into free agency, the Mavs pumped that line so much that everyone expected the Noel signing would be by far the biggest move they’d make in what was supposed to be (and currently is) a dreadfully quiet offseason.
It is August 1, 2017 as I finish typing this. Noel is not signed. Training camp is less than two months away.
The deafening silence has probably been the worst part. SB Nation’s Tim Cato (RIP) tweeted out that the sides were “not close” on July 11, the first real hints at the negotiations we’d heard since free agency began. On July 18, Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News published a story where Noel’s agent, Happy Walters, said he was “very disappointed” in the Mavericks offer so far.
Other than that, there hasn’t been much of a peep other than a few whispers here and there. Oh, and Noel hanging out with Rick Carlisle, Mark Cuban and the Mavericks Summer League team in Las Vegas earlier in July.
That’s where the craziness starts. While the Mavs sat on their hands all summer, fans, writers, radio hosts, podcasters had to have something to talk about. So we talked. Andrew Tobolowsky wonders if this is another face-plant in the long-line of recent Mavs free agency face-plants. The Ringer is just as curious as Noel’s MIA summer as we are.
Then we start going deeper down the rabbit hole.
Our own Doyle Rader wrote for WFAA.com that maybe the reason the Noel signing hasn’t happened yet is because the Mavs are counting their chickens for next summer. Tobolowsky hinted at the same thing — although instead of chickens it’s more like one giant chicken, that being DeMarcus Cousins.
This is the part where I slap these mouths away from trying to suckle at the rumor mill hysteria teat. Surely this is a foolish notion. Surely the Mavericks have learned their lesson of punting current summers for future ones to chase a big fish, and ... oh my god that’s exactly what’s happening.
You can’t even blame us for freaking out, because the Mavericks have done this multiple times in the last five years! You would think the Mavericks wouldn’t dare to low-ball their defensive and rim-rolling stalwart of a center, except that yes of course they would because they’ve already done it. Twice.
Then my logical brain snaps back into the forefront. Josh, you dummy, the Mavs are just playing the market and waiting it out so they can get Noel for less than the max! Which is very true, but then you realize there aren’t any teams left with max cap space anymore so either Noel is haggling over a “max or nothing” deal or the Mavs are haggling over a “we won’t pay you at least as much as we’re paying Wesley Matthews” deal and really, what side is easier to stand with? The Mavericks don’t have the free agency skins on the wall.
Luckily, there haven’t been any concrete reports on what exactly the Mavs are doing. But if you listen to local sports radio in Dallas or talk to any Mavs media members, you hear the whispers that there’s a chance this is what the Mavs are banking on. You’d think Dallas is above a move like signing a star free agent's younger brother to help sway said star free agent to the team, but then you look around and see Satnam Singh is still here. I’m not sure how much of the whispering is true or how much of it is just the inactivity driving us mad like when Bane in The Dark Knight Rises talked about “shipwrecked men turning to seawater for uncontrollable thirst.”
Don’t do this Mavericks. You have a wonderful core of Noel, Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr. that magically landed right in your lap. You have a chance to bypass years of frustrating rebuilding with a group of three players that even if they don’t produce in the win column, will at least put butts in seats and keep people interested. Can you even imagine what would happen if the Mavs hardball Noel, he signs the 1-year qualifying offer, he leaves next summer and Cousins doesn’t come to Dallas? You might as well detonate the entire city of Dallas. Just bury us in the dirt, nothing will be worth living for anymore.
Pay Noel. Let’s wake up tomorrow and see a cheery tweet that Noel is here to stay for the next four years. Do it before we all keep eating these damn pretzels and die of thirst.
|
Bolded has my thoughts... I would much rather "overpay" him by $2-3M/year than risk losing him next year for nothing. And I believe with reasonable certainty that he will leave next summer if he plays this year on the qualifying offer.

Going to be tough without a top flight center. Can't be a top-5 team in the league without an elite center unless you're the Warriors, Cavs, Spurs, Rockets, or Celtics
As Spreedom said, might as well explode the city in a nuclear bomb, spread the dust around, salt the earth, dance on the unburied corpses, and move to Houston. Losing a guy that cost us three second rounders will be one million times worse than losing DeAndre, losing Nash, losing Chandler, and Mark Cuban pooping himself on Shark Tank all put together.

Where do you get the $2-3m from? What if it's more like $8-10m??
It's not like re-signing him to "whatever" makes us a contender... Getting hamstrung by a bad contract is the LAST thing a rebuilding franchise wants to do.

The deal will get done. Unless they've seen him up close and don't like what they see- injury, attitude. He wants 20. They value him at 15. He'll end up around 17

Yeah, that's the way I see it....the Mavs have control of the situation and are doing the right thing and when the right time comes they'll pay him fairly even if Noel isn't necessarily happy with it.
My guess is the Mavs know they need at least one more piece to go with Noel, Barnes and DSJ long-term so it makes sense for them to get Noel at the most team friendly deal. They know after next season they'll either have to pay Curry or another FA to have that 4th key piece. Overpaying Noel could hamper that effort.

I was just going to bring up Capella. Do people think Capella is worth 20-25 million a year? Because I'd put him at slightly above Noel right now. Noel is still mostly potential at this point. I think he could live up to it, but maxing him out as a no-brainer is seriously misguided. I'd pay him it if we had to, but we don't. There is absolutely no way he gets the max. None.
And also, Noel is going to be a Maverick next season no matter what so I really don't get the concern. Either way, the Mavs aren't going to be very good. Why fret over a guy that isn't going to somehow swing the franchise back into contention?

Playing on a team with zero rebounding, zero defense, and a pace of 103.6 (4th in the NBA) really inflates his numbers

Looking at the stats, Capela is about 19th best as an average of multiple stat categories adjusted for pace (PER, EWA, rebound rate)
Noel is 30th
Neither are elite, but yeah Capela is probably the better player and doesn't have the injury baggage

Yep. If he walks next season, Ill probably be a DSJ/Barnes fan from afar once Dirk hangs em up. It would up there for biggest FO blunders and would set us back. We have a chance to be semi relevant right now having Noel as Center. Exciting and a shot at playoffs.

Why even play basketball if you arent Warriors Rockets Spurs then? Theres maybe 5 players that are swinging a team into contention. As a fan I would like to see our team get competitively better. Noel does that.

If we max noel at 25m a year and he never becomes more than a 8/8 10/10 kind of guy who gets injured and plays less than 30mins a game that would be so much worse than him walking a year from now. He hasn't earned a max according to the free agent market. Regardless of being a RFA, that didn't stop bad contracts like otto porter or crabbe being thrown out there. There have been numerous RFA's who get max offers from other teams. I don't buy that teams didn't offer it simply because we said we would match. We don't know what our actual offer is because we have heard 12 and we have heard 18. We don't know what Noel wants, if he wants 18 or 20 or max. We aren't low-balling a guy when nobody else made a reported offer.
Let's get real it's not like there were a ton of 5's on the market for him to compete with. If someone wanted him they would have offered him a significant contract regardless of what we said. He had competition in Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee, Alex Len, and Dedmon. And his name wasn't even being linked to teams with a market that pathetic. If Whiteside was available now he would have gotten a significant offer, if Jordan was free he would have as well.

I'm not sure you're being realistic with how tough the West is now. That doesn't mean the Mavs shouldn't get competitively better, but they aren't a playoff team let alone anywhere near contention.
It's funny that people are actually freaking out about this. Oh August and nothing else to talk about basketball-wise.

What the hell kind of logic is this? Why sign anyone that's ever had an injury if this is the thought process. Even Dirk says it's unfortunate the Mavs haven't made a serious offer on Noel.

No I'm pretty realistic in Mavs and the West. Fighting for an 8/9 seed while watching a young core and dirk. Mavs don't have a good track record lately when it comes to free agents so it's hard to take their side in this. The Mavs will not get a better center situation than what they have now.

Reading that from the post is like me saying; So in your opinion, why not overpay and max out everyone who has had injuries?

Exactly. If injuries didn't matter, then Derrick Rose would have a max contract.

Similar to how we screwed Chandler over. Yeah Mavs looked great optically after that. Listing one guy with multiple season injuries as to why a player with one injury should never get a decent contract. I never said max.
I guess just keep playing the nonchalant game about Mavs possibly screwing up a free agent again.

What have the Mavs screwed up though? They told Nerlens to go out and get the best offer he could, bring it to them, and they would match it. Nobody was willing to offer Nerlens a contract though. That's not Dallas' fault.

Noel has had multiple knee issues. A 23 year old player shouldn't be limited to 20 mpg. That's not just a small red flag.
And he will still get 15-18 mil a year anyway.

Patience... and some trust. Just because you may feel emotional and in the dark about this right now, doesn't mean it isn't being handled.

And by waiting, there's STILL an opportunity for another team to make him an offer... No reason for Noel to sign the QO or for Dallas to offer more money until the last possible moment. The difference between signing a contract today and a month from now is zero.

Blah blah blah Nash and Chandler blah blah blah
...is what I imagine people are saying. It's not rational. It's PTSD and the inherent side of pessimism that Mavs fans have learned to have.

Except that Chandler was an NBA champion defensive center and Nash one of the best pgs in the league. There really isn't any correlation between them and Noel.

Well if it doesn't work out with Noel, Deandre Jordan could be on the market next summer if he opts out of his Clipper contract.

Another reason not to overpay Noel. I could see DeAndra jumping all over a second chance to play for Dallas after the way things turned out in LA.

Hes going to want a max. Would much rather max Noel (if forced, prefer 17-20m) than 30 year old DJ, who has shown he's not willing to work on his game, or really, we know what his game is at this point.
