Dirk, take $31 million and sit out half the year Kobe-style in the Bahamas. You've earned it.

With the Durant news another +1 for Dirk, who didn't choose the easy way out.

No one talking about Dirks new 2/40 contract?
Can't say I completely agree, but it's basically exactly what 90% of the board has been requesting. I even hear year two is completely guaranteed so if Dirk retires, he'll still being in significant money.

Fine, good. Dirk left a record $72m on the table last contract and the FO did squat with it... They owe him.
Sure, giving $20m a year to a a 38-year-old is a crap move, salary-wise, but cap space doesn't mean much when you're not a contender anyway.
It is what it is.

2nd year is likely to be a player option, per Stein
So how exactly was this deal possible?

In essence, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary.

What do you mean? The option, or going over the cap? Because you can go over the cap to re-sign your own players... We used to do it all the time before Cuban started this whole Plan Powder nonsense after the new CBA came out.

So if I got this right basically they fit everybody within the cap, including Dirk's cap hold of 12M or whatever, and then just went over the cap to re-sign him. That's it?

Yup. Exactly. Could hypothetically have gone up to 30 a year, too.
But now we have zero cap room. If we want more roster adjustments it will be minimum contracts or trade. We're at 14, so unlikely to do anything but sign a summer league guy to send down to the d-league.

Yep. It's weird, last we heard yesterday Dirk's deal was likely going to be done before the Barnes deal because it was being reported as "9-12m" or "whatever was left". Then I get up today and see he's getting 20 so they somehow got everyone under the cap with his hold allowing them to go over the cap to resign. I guess that means we for sure cut McGee and his non guaranteed contract? I can't think of anything else off hand unless the renounced free agents yesterday did not include Lee or CV3 in the original plan and now they do? Only other thing I can see was misinformation/bad reporting. Or maybe just a bad assumption of the term "whatever is left".

Dirk did get whatever was left -- and then some.

Well yeah but I could have swore that it was being reported as Dirk was going to resign for "whatever was left" first, not last to go over the cap using bird. Because with his 12.5m hold it was difficult to fit everyone in to then go over and sign Dirk last. So the "whatever was left" was going to be less than his 12.5m cap hold.
The logical thing to do is just blame fish, I'm sure he was behind whatever misinformation I am thinking of.

This has turned out to be a decent off-season. Everyone seems to win here. Are we a legit title contender? No but we have a decent roster with some promising youth and Dirk gets paid. Plus the few vets that we do have are very tradeable.

Yeah, Fisher is doing major cleanup duty on twitter today after his reporting that Dirk is taking the remainder of the room.
Keeping Dirk's cap hold does coincide with them wanting to keep Mejri though so that is all cleared up.

I have a strong feeling that he will not play beyond 40. For some reason athletes, whether healthy or not, stop playing at that age. So these will likely be his final two seasons, and I look forward to how the organization honors him. Maybe they will let him shoot every shot in his final game just to mock Kobe's last effort.
Know what though? He won't. He's cares more about winning.

So this probably doesn't affect us much at all this year since we were going to be at or over the cap anyway. But this will eat into our cap space pretty significantly next off season, wont it?
Not saying he doesn't deserve some "back pay", or that it might help with some general goodwill around the league by showing how MC will do right by his players. But purely by the numbers that is a pretty big cap hit for a to-be-40-yr-old next year, isn't it?

Those were my thoughts, but second year is player option. I could really see Dirk opting out to retire or opting out to see if there is anything the cap can get and if that fails, signing a new one-year 20mill contract. A lot of flexibility. That, and we saw what cap space got us-- a serviceable center, a second round pick, and an overpaid (but potentially skilled) second-tier free agent. Space certainly isn't everything.

It seems that Dirk will be the 2nd 20-year 1 team player, the other being Kobe Bryant. I think that is really cool. I wonder if there will ever be a player drafted by a team who does the same. Kobe was drafted by Charlotte, and Dirk was drafted by Milwaukee. Of course L.A. traded Vlade Divac for Kobe, and Dallas traded Robert Traylor for Dirk. Those are two of the craziest trades in NBA history when looking at things in hindsight.

Thank you Cuban. I was appreciative of dirk taking a discount, but it was too much. If theres a perception that you devalue yourself, people will also think that of you. He rightfully deserves this contract and more, and people around the league will know that.
Drove me nuts hearing people on here say Dirk at 5m to help with FA. Its not worth it and doesnt always work out (now we know).

@JoshEberley: Dirk Nowitzki got a way harder path to superstardom than Tim Duncan, or Kobe Bryant. There's no comparison, fought for every inch.
@JoshEberley: Dirk Nowitzki's best teammate ever was one of:
Nash before his prime.
Past his prime Kidd.
Chandler for the ring run
Finley.
@JoshEberley: Kobe started his career with a top 10 player ever, won three rings before age 25, still requested a trade. Dirk's loyalty is unmatched.
@JoshEberley: Tim Duncan won a ring his sophomore season, always had talent around him. People forget how big that 06 series was for Dirk and the Mavs.
@JoshEberley: Think about what Dirk witnessed and never bailed.
Nash leaves, back-to-back MVP's.
Finley leaves wins a ring.
06 Finals loss.
07 collapse.
@JoshEberley: LeBron left a team that failed to support him with star talent, Durant left a team that was just up 3-1 on the defending champs.
@JoshEberley: Even after Nowitzki and the Mavericks win in 2011, when the management failed over and over he dug in. That's loyalty.
@JoshEberley: People are rightfully upset that the Mavs haven't built a contender around Dirk the last few years. . But, truth is he always overachieved.

Some of those Spurs teams from the early 00's were kind of shitty outside of Duncan and Robinson honestly. Other than that this is spot on.

Also I'm stoked to see Dirk get into the 30K point club. That's something that can never be taken away from him unlike say a top 5 rank or whatever

Dirk doesn't rely on athleticism so I'd bet he'd still be a respectable player for 4 more years. Guys like Dirk age like fine wine while guys like Dwight Howard or Wade get beat by Father Time very suddenly.

While the convo is currently about the alltime points club, I'd like to bring up Kareem's ridiculously disrespectful shot at Dirk from last year. I've always thought it broke the "code" that the hall of famers seemingly have. It just seemed so classless of him.

Dirk re-signing has inspired me to take a trip down to Dallas finally. (For those that don't know, I'm from the Portland area). Thinking about trying to find a back to back over a weekend if possible to come down for a couple of games. I'd like to see him and the squad at home, as well as spend way too much money at the fan store.

Don't want to hijack the Dirk thread, but TMac just called Fish out on his BS...
@espn_macmahon: @fishsports Funny, ESPN never had anything about Dirk making $9-12M per year. Wonder why?
@fishsports: Nothing 'funny' abt what ur doing, Tim. I know ur just tryin to pay the rent. But I politely ask u to stop it.
@espn_macmahon: @fishsports Sure, Fish. Great scoop. Only off by $22M. Psst, nothing changed overnight.
@fishsports: Here you go, sir. cap-hold issue blossomed: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=268& …
@espn_macmahon: @fishsports I'm well aware of how you're spinning it. I was also well aware when you were screaming EXCLUSIVE that you were dead wrong.

@espn_macmahon: @fishsports I'm well aware of how you're spinning it. I was also well aware when you were screaming EXCLUSIVE that you were dead wrong.

Yep, I posetd earlier about Fish trying to cover his ass with this. He was just dead wrong, won't admit it, and is spinning it like nobody's business.

Mind blown! Dwain Price Tweeted "In the summer of 1988, Karl Malone signed a 10-year, $18 million contract. #BornTooSoon"
That is INSANE! Karl Malone is a league MVP. The 6th best point guard in the league now recently signed a 5-year, $153 million contract. What will contracts in 2050 look like? Will the currency even be in dollars still? Will teams only be located in North America? I hope that there will be some serious changes in the league by then. It's becoming a league that only the wealthy can enjoy.
