Dirk you will forever be my favorite player and I think more for the person you are than for your accomplishments/abilities.
As humble as he is great. As passionate as he is genuine. As clutch as he is consistent. Dirk, simply put, you are the man! Congrats on joining the elusive 30k club you beast you.

Truly one of the greatest experiences of my life getting to watch him from the trade in draft night through the end. I'm not sure I could have picked a better PERSON to follow their entire career!

Yep, said he drank one before the presser... Oh well, I guess it's hard to develop a taste for good beer when you only get to drink one or two per decade.

Well said, and he is humble in the true sense of the word, not the way it's thrown around now. The first thing he mentioned when Skin interviewed him after the game was the air ball to start the 2nd quarter.

Dirk has always been his own biggest critic -- perfection is what drives him.

Yeah it's so disgusting. They will mention Dirk hitting 30k here and there throughout the day. When Lebron gets to within 500 points of 30,000 ESPN will have a daily countdown meter and it will be wall to wall coverage once he hits the milestone. I will give props to Lebron though for taking time away from dinner to congratulate Dirk, he didn't have to and it was pretty cool that he did. It prolly forced more ppl to talk about it just having Lebron show that he too found it significant enough not to miss.

Only presser I could find:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml2vj_jjerc
https://www.reddit.com/r/nbastreams/ is the perfect place to find all higher quality streams. It's also separated out by Home / Away feeds.

Dirkisgrüven
There always seems to be a German word for the strangest things. There is a new one now that Dirk Nowitzki has scored over 30,000 points in the NBA.
Dirkisgruven: The act of hitting 10 fadaway jump shots in a row.
Buy a shirt, hoodie or sticker in honor of one of the greatest NBA players of all time.

It makes me so happy to see the media gushing over Dirk these days, after years and years of disrespect. People are finally realizing that Dirk is not only one of the greatest players ever, but also the most influential player of the post-Jordan era. He revolutionized the game. He was the original "stretch 4." Nowadays you can't compete for a title without one.

So true. And this 30k came at a time when theres not much sports going on, so it really gave people time to discuss Dirk's legacy on tv. Colin Cowherd (whose opinion I usually agree with on NBA, slandered Dirk, and Nick Wright came on his show to set him straight. Nick Wright has him 16th all time.

I say give Dirk the 10th spot. I don't know who you throw out, and I don't care, but revolutionizing the position must mean something extra. Sure, there were stretch bigs before Dirk, but he was the one that hit that message home once and for all, that spacing bigs are enormously impactful.
And let me ask you this, how many players have true signature moves, that was only theirs? The wrong footed fade was literally developed by Dirk. He was the first and only player to do it in the beginning, and the best perimeter players in the game all copied it. Durant, Lebron, Bryant, etc.
And even though they made some, it never became a huge part of their repertoire. Why? Because it's so incredibly hard to do it. All of these factors must objectively mean that Dirk deserves to be bumped up a couple of spots, and him being a top 10 player is not an argument that you can easily dismiss anymore.

I usually enjoy Cowherd, but every now and then he says something so outrageously stupid that I have to assume he's just trolling and doesn't actually believe it. This is definitely one of those moments. I love how he detracts from Dirk by saying he's "pure finesse" as if that's a bad thing, or as if that means Dirk's accomplishments are somehow not worth as much. Someone might want to inform Cowherd that Kareem, Magic and Bird were also finesse players, and the modern NBA is a completely finesse league.
EDIT: I'm glad Nick Wright was there to talk some sense to Cowherd, but I think even he actually underrated Dirk a little bit. Dirk is better than Dr. J. No question.

I can't quite justify putting him in the top 10. There are 11 players in particular that I just can't put Dirk ahead of.
1. MJ
2. Kareem
3. Lebron
4. Wilt
5. Shaq
6. Magic
7. Bird
8. Hakeem
9. Russell
10. Kobe
11. Duncan
Those are the only players I can say were unequivocally better than Dirk. I'm tempted to put Moses Malone there too, given that he was a 3-time MVP, a Finals MVP, and led the league in rebounding numerous times. Then there are other guys that you could argue were better than Dirk (but I'm not necessarily doing so)- Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, KG, Karl Malone, Barkley, not to mention some of the modern players like Durant, or Curry.
Still, all told it's a very short list. Dirk is easily top 20, and I think you could make a very strong case for top 15.

I think we could throw Kobe out, advanced stats like Dirk better, but that would still make him "only" 11th. Darn you, you are right, 11th is the highest I could argue.

I know I've posted this before, I just love this Bill Simmons article from the now-defunct Grantland. The article is actually about Carmelo, but he goes off on a tangent to talk about awesome Dirk is. Simmons was always one of the few national media figures who appreciated Dirk's greatness, even when others were stupidly calling him soft, or saying he couldn't win big games. I became a Bill Simmons fan very early on for that reason.
Quote:
For me, it keeps coming back to one question: Can you win the NBA championship if Carmelo Anthony is your best player?
The short answer: Yes.
You can.
Unfortunately, we need to compare Carmelo to a better player to prove that point. The 2011 Mavericks won the title with a veteran team built around a spectacular coach (Rick Carlisle), an elite rim protector (Tyson Chandler), an elite perimeter defender (Shawn Marion), an elite heat-check guy (Jason Terry), quality 3-point shooting (39.4 percent and 184 made 3s in 21 playoff games), savvy team defense and one historically good scorer with crunch-time chops (Dirk Nowitzki). If you believe Carmelo can lead a championship team, you’re leaning heavily on that 2011 Mavs playbook — you’d need all the elements we just covered, and you’d need Carmelo to unleash a damned good Dirk impression.
Only one problem: Dirk was better than Carmelo is.
Dirk is one of the 20 best basketball players of all time by any calculation. He’s the best foreign player ever not named Hakeem. Of the 10 best forwards ever, he’s behind Bird, LeBron and Duncan, right there with Doc, Elgin and Pettit, and ahead of Malone, Barkley and Rick Barry.5 He won an MVP and a Finals MVP. He made four first-team All-NBA’s and five second-team All-NBA’s. He won 50-plus games for 11 straight years, topped 60 wins three times, made two Finals, beat LeBron and Wade in the Finals, and won a Game 7 in San Antonio during Duncan’s prime.
And it’s not like he had a ton of help. In 15 years, he played with only four All-Stars: Jason Kidd (2010), Josh Howard (2007), Steve Nash (2002 and 2003) and Michael Finley (2000 and 2001). Amazing but true: Dirk never played with a Hall of Famer in that Hall of Famer’s prime.
During Dirk’s decade-long peak (2002 through 2011), he averaged 24.5 points and 8.8 rebounds and came damned close to creating the 10-Year 50-40-90 Club (48% FG, 39% 3FG, 89% FT). His career PER (23.48) ranks 19th all time, just behind Doc (23.58) and Bird (23.5) and just ahead of Kobe (23.36). And he was an absolutely phenomenal playoff performer: 25.6 PPG (12th all time), 24.2 PER (12th), 22.6 win shares (16th), stellar 46-37-89% splits in 135 games, and a couple of epic multigame hot streaks in 2006 and 2011. Along with Pettit, Hakeem and Elgin, he’s one of four players in the shot-clock era who averaged 25 and 10 in the playoffs. And he’s an underrated leader, a famously fantastic locker-room guy, an insanely hard worker and someone who, by all accounts, everyone loved playing with at every point of his career.
