Mavericks forward Caron Butler was projected to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his right patellar tendon on Jan. 1, but Butler now says doctors have told him he “has a shot” at returning in the playoffs. “Trust me, I’m busting my ass to get out there,” Butler told Yahoo! Sports. “I’m not on vacation right now. I’m working hard to get out there.

A return in time for the playoffs certainly doesn't look as unlikely now as it did in January. Then again, I still wouldn't count on it.

"I can't give you a medical opinion," Carlisle said. "My coaching opinion is, his jump shot looks great. He's doing great and he's way ahead of schedule. But timetable-wise, I don't have one. He's been able to step up his activity moderately, but he's not running yet or anything like that.
"It's extremely unlikely we'll see him in the first round."

I knew back in January when the Caron injury happened it was done, and I immediatly wrote the mavs off. 3 months later I had slowly talked myself into thinking that with Roddy back and Peja (in a small role) would make up for it and we could still win it.
Well I should have just stayed with my gut instinct.

realtuffjuice Great day in rehab feeling great
BallinWithBryan Caron Butler was present at practice today and taking light jump-shots. The man is a tireless worker.
Still WCF at the best i guess...

Read that he's going through rigorous workouts, but without contact.

Having Caron Butler would be great on many levels. The problem is that we probably won't see a healthy AND productive Caron Butler this season. It's still possible that he could return in a 2nd round series or later (if we make it there), however, you have to wonder just how rusty he would be after such a severe knee injury. Dirk was only out 2-3 weeks in January and looked like a different player in his first few games after coming back. In Caron's case, getting acclimated would probably take even longer.
I'd love to have him back, if only for 10 minutes per game, but I guess we'll have to hope for our various second bananas to deliver enough offensive firepower for us to win. Last night, we had Dirk, Jet and a big bag of nothing. With Caron, I think we would have won that game easily. Since he's not there, others will have to step up again.

Mavericks' Caron Butler working, but return not near

He did some work with Casey Smith as the Mavs practiced on the Nike Campus today. I'm not exactly sure what they did but it was enough for Caron to build up a solid sweat.

Pray LAL will play against NOH in 7 games, that will give more time for Caron.

There are only three days left in the week--the very week he was/is supposed to get his first contact pratice. Or has it already happened and I just missed it?

He hasn't had any contact drills or practice in a contact setting.
Everything has been non-contact.

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle just jumped on GAC on ESPN 103.3 FM to say that, despite Caron Butler's optimism that he'd return from an injury that has kept him sidelined since Jan. 1, there is "zero chance" that the small forward will play at any point during the series against the Los Angeles Lakers.
More to come.

Maybe I'm thinking into it too much but maybe RC is using Butler as an emotional lift in case Lakers shatter Mavericks morale RC suits up Butler and Dirk goes off for 50?
