A reminder that when Nowitzki is in that zone, that level, he can take a game that you feel is on lockdown to absolute disaster. Don’t look away. It’ll hurt more if you don’t see it coming.

Dirk is leading the NBA in the +/- stat. Mavericks lead pretty much every stat there is in +/-. For whatever that is worth.

And my name's Dirk and it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet and your gonna regret
cuz I'm the best there's ever been
When Dirk got finished Jennings bowed his head because he knew he had been beat
And he laid that game ball on floor at Dirk's feet
Dirk said Jennings just come on back if you ever want to try again
I'd done told ya once you son of a b*tch
I'm the best there's ever been!

I have a Offical Countdown thread for Dirk's march towards 20,000 posts. He has offically passed Duncan as of last night.

Wow, really? That would put him 5th all-time on this board, just a little over Flaco. He still has over 10,000 more to catch up with Sike though...
Come to think of it, I'm away from the board for a bit, and when I come back, Dirk is posting here?

Best player ever to put on a Mav uniform, and it isn't even close.

Just a passing question: In all of sports history, are there any other #41's who could have an argument as the greatest over Dirk? I cant think of any...

Dirk is automatic. Above it. Expected. Incredible. Undefendable. Ridirkulous.
Thank you for not playing in other league ball this summer.

Apparently, Coop just called Dirk better at his sport than any other Dallas athlete in their sport ever.
And I'm inclined to say it's close. With a ring, it would be no context.

I just hope, there will be a stretch now where he gets more rest and doesn't need to be the hero every game. Nobody will remember these November games next May, should the Mavs be one an early fishing trip by then.

Sure it's close to being true... He's one of the all time greats to play not only his position but the game.
I would think that there's a few Cowboys that have something to say about who's number 1... and maybe a Stars player and perhaps a Rangers great or two. But Dirk is right up there in the mix. He's not #1 in my opinion, but when you start talking about one of the definitive top 50 players to ever play the game, he has to be at least very close to the top when it comes to top area athletes that at least played on a team sport.

Unfortunately nearly no one in germany recognizes what a great sportsman he is.
Sometimes the Mavs make it to the morning news shortly after the games end, but i have never seen them in the main news at 8 or 1015 pm

arod is one of the definitive top 10 players ever to play his sport... Is dirk near the top of the list? of course. Is he actually a legit challenger for the title? No.
For the record the list of dallas area players id take over him during my lifetime(since 1985 and not in order)
Emmitt smith
Troy Aikman
Arod
and maybe Pudge
(Caveat if you include vy at texas he jumps to 1)
Dirk is my favorite athlete ever. I absolutely love the guy. That said hes in the 2nd or third tier or so of all time greats in bball. Arod legitimately has an argument as the best player ever 3 of his best seasons were here.

I throw out ARod simply because of lack of time spent playing for the Rangers.. same for Ryan and Fergie Jenkins.

If I were to make a list, it would probably include:
Dirk
Modano
Larry Allen
Emmitt Smith (begrudingly)
Pudge (perhaps the best player ever to play his position)
DSanders
Aikman
Obviously, if we were to go back to the 60's and 70's, I'd add a couple more to that list.

I throw out ARod on account of his steroid induced man-boobs.

Don't worry about it 5-0. It's a Mavs discussion forum. We're discussing something related to a Mavs player.

The point was made anyway - everyone would list Dirk as one of Dallas' best pro athletes ever (regardless of where you rank him, he's definitely in the discussion...)

There have been a few Dallas athletes that were the best in the world at what they were doing. (Byron Nelson? Michael Johnson?) Let's hold off on elevating Dirk to that level.

Dirk has been at that level for several years, period. To say otherwise would be uncivilized.

Interesting defense by coop. "Dirk is the best player at his position that dallas has ever had". He discounts Nolan/Arod because of time spent here.
He doesn't believe emmitt is on as high a pedestal as a running back as the dirkster is as a power forward for example. Has a point.

Pudge has to be in that conversation. He's clearly top five at his position all time.
Nolan's not in that conversation regardless of his time spent with the Rangers.

I'd like to interject that Brett Hull (3rd most goals scored in NHL history) should also be thrown out because he only spent three seasons here.
But no one included him anyway, of course.
Soooo.....

Dirk has qualitatively changed the PF position. I'm not sure any other Dallas athlete could make the same claim about their affect on the game. Maybe Pudge...Maybe Bob Hayes...
