the real question is why we didn't play wright more. we were +13 during the 19 minutes with wright He did a decent job on Paul. He is clearly one of our best defenders. Dirks +/- was +1 in 42.5 minutes - so we lost it in the 5 minutes without dirk.

Good question, Wright and Damp should have gotten minutes in the 4rth, JJB not really.

I agree. I don't understand why Damp continues to ride the bench during the 4th quarter (of most games, not just this one). Furthermore, as bad as Wright is on offense, his defense is fairly reliable. The stupid 3 guard lineup in the 4th quarter was just unwatchable. I truly don't understand why Carlisle continues to use it when it obviously isn't working for the Mavs. It may work for brief minutes, but not for an extended period of time.

You must be exaggerating or some such. Myself and a few others have been saying the same thing for the last two or three pages.
Carlisle f*cked up again by not using a center in the 4th quarter. No excuse for that. I realize that West was scoring Dampier however, the other things that Damp brought was a lot more valuable to the team.
And Barea is just a sideshow. He will not be counted on in the playoffs. He will get abused as he did today. He cannot defend, rebound, or pass. He can penetrate and score sometimes. He is not a good shooter.
And Howard struggled shooting the ball but he needed to be out there. He and Dampier needed to be there in the 4th.

Hmm. Maybe because Wright was exponentially worse than Kidd on the offensive end, and Kidd was awful?
Invariably, he would be wide open in the corner, Dirk would pass up a 12 foot fade away jumper and pass to Wright for a miss.
We were constantly behind in the 4th and we needed scorers on the floor.

This reeks of knee-jerk.
Funny how fans around here act after a loss.

It's the Barea bashing that puzzles me. This guy has exceeded NBA career expectations this season and people are still bitching. Not one logical person would argue he is a starter and not one logical person would not give him credit for being a nice role/bench player.
Even including today's poor performance, Barea is averaging 10.4ppg, 4.0 as, 0.8 TOs, and shooting .606% fg percent in the last 6 games.
No one predicted that....
Just give credit where credit is due instead of bitch, bitch, bitch....
The odds were against us this game, cry, moving on....

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not unhappy with Barea for being on the court. I'm unhappy with Rick Carlisle.
Your assessment of Barea is dead-on. He is a nice role/bench player. One who shouldn't be on the court with the game on the line against a good team.

Couldn't agree more. For me, the real humor comes when folks complain about the Mavs shooting too many jumpers and not going toward the rim enough, then proceed to complain that Barea--the best penetrator the Mavs have--is in the game.

Hmmm?
Maybe, just maybe, because JJB is an atrocious defender yet was guarding the best PG in the NBA?
Maybe because JJB can't penetrate when teams actual decide to guard his drive?
Maybe because he was the third guard in a three guard lineup?
So maybe that's why. Maybe.

I''m on the Barea band wagon, but having the three guard lineup on the court late in the fourth today was a bad move, imo.
Barea played really well in the first half, in fact the team operated better with him on the floor than with Kidd. But in the fourth you just can't have him guarding Chris Paul and dribbling around without a purpose late in the shot clock. Just wasn't worrking today.

Exactly. It isn't Barea per se. It is Barea's role. Having him with Terry and Kidd is not good.
Barea should be a 10 minute backup to Kidd. Nothing more, nothing less. It isn't about what his expectations were before the year and what they are now, and if he has exceeded those expectations. What it is about is competing with the other top teams. And Barea as the SF (or would you prefer Kidd or Terry?) is not the answer.

In the playoffs, you're exactly right. There should only be 24 minutes left behind Kidd/Terry/Howard (who should play 40 mpg each, meaning that Barea and Wright should split the rest. Bass (the only other guy off the bench we can count on) has to play a bit more because he's backing up both Dirk and Dampier.

Not sure whose question you're answering with your "maybe," because I sure as hell didn't ask one. Whoever's question it was, you did manage to fail to even remotely touch on my point, which is that some people want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to JJB.

You have to ask RC. I'm pretty sure nobody knows the reason around here.

He's a worthless scorer and him being a worthless scorer hurts Dirk more than anyone as you can see tonight. They just throw Paul to help out Posey without any regard for Kidd. The good definately outweigh's the bad for Kidd but I can no longer ignore how bad of a offensive scorer he is. He wasn't always like this and I don't think it has to do with age. He's too hesitant. And the worst part is when he's hesitant and still throws the shot up. That's a shot no one in the league ever hits.

I agree completely.

Yes. I was pissed to see Barea out there in the 4th, but not because of him, simply because of his role. He can't guard Paul IMO. And the three-guard-lineup doesn't work for an entire quarter. It might work to insert it for a short period of time and to switch back to your usual rotation afterwards. But not for an entire quarter.

Watching Barea try to guard Paul in the fourth just one thing kept going through my mind, WTF are you thinking Rick? that was just a terrible match up.

I'm still pissed they slammed that last shot in for no reason. I've never seen a team just leave the ball bouncing and walk off without shaking hands before but they deserved it after that little stunt.
I hate the Hornets more than any other team in the league. Everything about them, including their announcer, annoys me.
