I guess the fact that his old teammates are surrounding him and won't let him make a free choice just validates him as a third-wheel bitch.

'95 Rockets, they drafted Olajuwon with a 1st pick. 96'-'98 Bulls, they drafted Jordan third and Pippen high in the lottery if I remember correctly. '99 Spurs, they drafted Robinson and Duncan as well a decade or so later, both were first picks If I'm not mistaken. 2000-2003 Lakers, they drafted Bryant in the lottery. 2004 Pistons, probably the first exception.
2005 Spurs again. 2006 Heat, they drafted Wade high in the lottery. 2007 Spurs again, 2008 Celtics, the second exception, although on a second thought, no they aren't. Remember those trades? They don't have the assets without tanking. 2009-2010 Lakers, 2011 us, we obviously wouldn't have won without Dirk, we drafted him (or traded for him, however you look at it) high in the lottery. 2012-2013 Heat again, with Wade still playing a key role. 2014 Spurs again, 2015 Warriors, drafted Curry high in the lottery.
I'm sure you see my point. The vast majority of NBA champions has become NBA champions (and you could go back to Bird, Magic, etc.) because they drafted a generational talent high in the lottery. How do you get there? By not being particularly good. We got there the same way. I'm sure you wouldn't argue that those teams couldn't have won without their generational talent. Call it whatever you want to call it, if we want to win again, chances are that we'll need a high draft pick, possibly several.
|
So in the last 35 years of top 10 picks, about 8 times a generational talent was taken that led to titles. 8 out of 350 does not make for good odds

Cuban should sue DJ and the NBA over this. It seems to me that it would be easy to demonstrate direct financial harm as a result of the pathetic process we are witnessing. Unbelievable.

Not that a Clippers franchise that had Donald Sterling at the helm for 3 decades ever had much in the way of dignity, but they've really come across as a pathetic lot in all of this.

If you think the 2006 Finals were BS (which they were), than this is a whole new level of unprecedented twilight zone.
If Silver let this fly, he can go fuck himself.

And anything he rightfully does just comes across as sour grapes in the media. Best believe they will spin this as some love story for DJ/Blake/Clippers.

The media was rooting for him to stay in LA all along. They are going to write puff pieces about how his teammates love him and would never let him leave. I can't believe that this is happening.

The Mavs should try to induce as much chaos as possible before players begin signing. Start making calls to prospects that have already committed. Tell them that the NBA has just decided the verbal commitments are meaningless. Free agency hasn't even begun yet.. Whatever, create chaos. Amplify the circus. Take no prisoners. If you are living in a characterless climate, then you might as well play as dirty as your cohorts.

We are going to be the laughingstock of the NBA when this is done. That's why this sucks so bad. We are literally getting flushed down the toilet right now.

It feels terribly unfair, but rules are rules.
Real agreements cannot be put in place until the moratorium has been lifted. So everything that happens before then is fair game evidently.
There is nothing that Silver can do about this, other than change the rule for the future. So that teams/players can sign binding agreements on day 1 of free agency.

So far, Clippers able to keep everyone else out of house, including Cuban, agents. Everyone. They're in four-corners until midnight Eastern.

I don't think so. The story will be about DJ and the Clippers, not the Mavs.
You just don't do this unless you were really coerced. Jordan looks like the fool. Not the Mavs. The Clippers look like a small organization without any sense of integrity. The Mavs did everything right on this but they backed the wrong horse. The only Mav who looks a bit impotent is Chandler Parsons. He encouraged Mavs + DJ. You have to wonder about his judgment if DJ flips.

And THIS isn't coercion? Give me a break. DJ is a real idiot, with a capital "I" for letting this happen. Does he have any manhood at all? He told the Mavs he would talk to them one more time and now this??

I don't disagree that this is on DJ, but we're still a laughing stock because our organization is about to be reduced to shit for the next half decade. No KD. No draft picks. No DJ. Carslile is gone. Dirk has nothing left to play for. It's over.

It would be funny if all this begging clippers are doing right now backfires. Look Cuban and the Mavs players have spent a lot time with DJ already. You just never know if he's like nah to signing back with LA. It all seems creepy what they are doing with him now.

Here's concern within some front offices right now: Will Mavericks come chasing our committed free agents if they have new-found cap space?

It sort of shows DJ's decision-making is pretty malleable.

Reggie Miller isn't a player any more but called it ridiculous and against the unspoken rules.
