Meh.
The Mavericks will likely end up with the 6th seed now unless they get their act together against Memphis tomorrow and closing the season with a healthy squad. I actually don't hate their chances against the Lakers. The Mavericks don't match up horribly against them and if Carlisle can put together some good defensive schemes, a zone which is even half as effective as it was in last year's playoffs, then they have a chance against the Lakers.
Very disappointing loss though. Winning tomorrow is absolutely essential if the Mavericks wanna avoid the Lakers or a top seeded team in the first round.

I don't want the spurs or the lakers. The spurs will capitalize on our crappy 3pt defense and the lakers will pound us inside.
But at this rate it won't make much dif who we play.

Bullets:
Game:- #Mavs lose to the #Blazers 101.72 to 103.82, set new season-low in FTA at 8.39 P100
- But #Mavs also limit #Blazers to 7.34 Transition PP100 and 11.54 FTA P100, both lows for opps this season.
- #Mavs do a better job in Transition themselves, score 27.27 PP100, which is 2nd best at home this season
- Dallas continues to limit free throw attempts at home. In last six they allowed 11.36 P100 at max. The season average is 18.08
- But assist-rate has been down lately. In 6 of last 9, they assisted on <50% of their FGs, happened only 4 times in previous 47
- With -89.31 Differential P100, it was the worst 3rd quarter this season. #Mavs score 44.65 PP100, shot 26.48% TS%
- #Mavs have had bad 3rd quarters before, but surprisingly rank 8th in #NBA at +2.97 Point Differential P100. 5th worst Offense (99.00) though
- #Mavs shot 5-for-15 in the Clutch, committed only one turnover, but that one was big. They rank 17th in the Clutch this season (-3.56 PP100)
Game:- Starting unit was +3.94 PP100 on 94.66 Def, bench units -4.81 on 103.53 Def
- Outside starting backcourt nothing really worked, but Terry/West, who played all crunch minutes, end up worst with -7.86 on 90.41 Off
- With Roddy at the point, #Mavs OffEff was 109.84, Terry 88.97, West 98.60
- Best unit was Terry-West-Shawn-Dirk-Wood (+23.72 PP100), outscored #Blazers 18-14
- C-Watch: /w Wood 100.38 Def, 47.06% TRB. With Wright 107.68 & 45.45%. No difference in opp paint scoring
- Unadj. +/- to @swish41 (+50.72), no one else even close. Carter, Odom, Terry, West, Wright negative. Effs with Dirk: 108.14 Off & 100.32 Def
Players:- Wright leads advanced metrics: PER (32.1), WS48 (0.378), WP48 (0.547). Dirk, Terry, Marion decent, forget the rest, especially Carter, Odom
- Best rebounder was Dirk (18.0%), best shooter Wright (87.4% TS), Roddy 22.7% AST%, no TOV.
- West only shot 2-for-9 on 10+ 2FG - Haywood 0-for-3 at the rim - Dirk & Roddy 1-for-10 from three.
- Dirk finished 1-for-4 in the Clutch with 2 free throw and a turnover, good for a 4.16 PER. Terry 25.46, Marion 12.46, rest also useless.
- Not the best day for Roddy on the defensive end, allowed 62.5% FG%, 30.16 PER. Terry, Wright atrocious as well
Rest:- Gameflow chart
- Despite defensive shortcomings lately, #Mavs still rank 6th in DefEff, 7th in Opp. FG% and 6th in DRB%

Gasol was clearly bothered by something last year (break-up with his girl friend?), so I guess he'll be a different beast this time around.
But I think the Mavs have a decent chance against any team. Once this silly regular season is finally over, it'll be a whole different situation.

First things first, we have to get there first. It's gonna be one hell of a race to the finish. Every game at this point is critical. Forget positioning yourself, we just need to focus on getting there.

Not a gimmie matchup but I'd take it. They could win or lose to anybody though.
|
Who's gonna beat us? Outside the Clippers in a 7game series, everybody.
Marion can guard Kobe, but Gasol/Bynum will abuse the hell out of the Mavs. And the trade they made before the deadline is looking real nice right now.

WTF is with this team in 3rd qtrs?
More minutes for West, less for Kidd? Kidd>>West, especially in PO.

Dirk spot on:
Quote:
"It's always like I start off hot, I get out of the game at 6 minutes, whatever, first quarter. Then I didn't get a shot, basically one shot in the second and one in the third. And then we're down 8 and then it's like, 'Here you go, now you've got the ball, make something happen.' It's tough. I've got to be able to keep myself in rhythm and keep getting touches throughout the game."

I didn't realize it until I read it at DB.com... but Dirk had to play pretty much the entire last 20 minutes. He came in about the 3 minute mark of the 3rd and never left. And that rest in the 3rd was a two minute break when his sub was god awful that Carlisle had to put him back in to stop the bleeding.

Seriously, there is absolutely no justification to keep playing Odumb. Just bench his ass for good.

Also Carter is becoming annoying lately.
I liked his positive attitude. But right now there is really no reason to laugh your ass off on the bench all the time and joke with Odom. That's not positive attitude, that's more like giving *s.
If you can re-watch the game, just look at Carter's reaction (and the other players' faces) when Odom gets benched.

Well.... here's Carter's main problem:
In March:
8.6 PPG
36% Fg
31% 3P
1 FTA
In April:
4.7 PPG
24% FG
12.5% 3P
1 FTA
He looks done. And yet he still plays over half the game. (Oh and go back and look at the 3rd. Carter was a huge culprit in that because of his shot selection.)

Moving Carter out of the starting unit with Kidd healthy is a no-brainer. Unfortunately Carlisle likes that unit because of their defense and they still own a very reasonable plus in net points, but Carter is doing so little as of late.
I might do a research on Dirk's touches but an early look seems to indicate that there is no real difference between his amount of FGA and Kidd on/off. But he is in fact getting a lot of touches early, very few in the second and third. Surprisingly West also takes more shots with Dirk on the floor than Terry/Roddy.

Imagine a tired/pissed/focused bench and a totally relaxed VC joking with LO and giving pretty much s* about LO's pathetic performance (the reason why RC benched him 5 seconds ago). It was especially annoying because VC was not sitting right by LO. There were guys sitting between them and making jokes was the last thing they wanted.
IMO there are two camps in this team Wood/VC/Odom/Roddy/Wright/Mihnimi - West/Dirk/Jet/Kidd/Marion. And i am not sure if they can fix it.

Jet's foul at 3.7 forty feet from the hoop with the blazers in scramble mode was really dumb. They get nothing more than a wild prayer shot, but the foul allowed them to re-set and get the called play to LA.
A total brain freeze

You enjoy making sh!t up and pretending like it's reality, don't you?
Like most of your posts, your unfounded "two camps" hypothesis is a ridiculous waste of server space... Where's the evidence, Sherlock?

There were quite a few out there. The Mavs actually shut them down at the correct times but couldn't get scores.

and simply quote other guys. This seems to make it easier for you to accept rumors and opinions...

So Sherrington's doubts about Roddy's long term development should serve as prove to your "two camp"-theory?
Really?

Where did i say that ?
It is just an exmaple that (sometimes) some of you seem to be very incapable of accepting other opinions (unless it is a quote from a media guy).
Just listen to ben/skin/coop/nate/galloway. Read dallasnews, star telegram, tim mc mahon and so on...
And then you will realise that...Haywood loves Carter (north cariolina connection)...., that both of them are big Odom supporters...and that Jet, Dirk and co. could not care less about all this. and so on.
No rocket sience. Really.

No, not rocket science - just a load of bullsh!t.
Give me a break, Haywood is against West/Dirk/Jet/Kidd/Marion because he went to the same college as Vince Carter, who happens to be a Lamar Odom "supporter" just because they were cracking jokes on the bench? That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard - NOBODY in the Dallas media is trying to make that case, not even the horrible list of sources that you named...

I would hope that everybody on the Mavs is a HUUUGE supporter of their teammates - that's what being a team is all about.
How does that fact set them into a different "camp" than West/Dirk/Jet/Kidd/Marion? Those guys have been plenty supportive too...

What about that Kidd/Carter connection, the international family, the former lottery syndicate, the minimum cartel?
High noon is coming, only one can control drugs and prostitution within the Mavs locker room.

Pathetic.
EDIT: the only person posting in that thread who even comes close to "insider" status is David Lord, and he totally disagrees that the team is taking sides between Odom and JET... Try again (again).

OK
My look on Dirk's USG% with several guards running the show:
http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2012/4/...uches-decrease
Was totally wrong about "no real difference between his amount of FGA (USG%) and Kidd on/off" and "in fact getting a lot of touches early, very few in the second and third."
That's where a second, deeper look into the case comes in handy I guess
