That's the way I remember it. I thought the 8th seed was decided by a single game. If Golden State had lost one more game or if the Clippers had lost one more, the Clips would've had the 8th seed. Maybe I was wrong, but that's what I remember.

It still applies then. Because I remember distinctly Avery riding the starters against the Clippers and then resting them against the Warriors. Not too bright.

EKS just tweeted that Bird sent a congratulatory text to Carlisle towards Dirk. Later, Dirk received a congratulatory text from Bird himself.

basketball-reference is telling me that it was a two-game difference (42-40 and 40-42). They split the season series so I can't quickly tell who had the tiebreaker.

If the Mavericks need be concerned about 7th or 8th seeded teams they are not championship material.

The only teams they haven't beaten in that category are the Lakers, Knicks, and Bulls. (combined 0-1 record, haven't even played two of them!)

Well, this isn't football. Matchups are the most important thing in he NBA. Thje West is flukely because a 7th-8th seed is more like a 4-5 seed in the East.

Then why does every single 1st/2nd seed besides the Mavericks always get out of the first round?

Well, were the Spurs a real 7th seed last year? There was 5 games separating the Mavs and Spurs last year.
The GS year was a matchup issue. The Mavs hadn't matched up well against them in a long time. People knew that from the start.....
The West this year is going to have a little dropoff. There won't be like 7 teams reach 50 games.

If you're a 1 or 2 seed, you should get to the conference finals. Period.

i'm not worried about any 7th or 8th seeded teams, or for that matter anyone else in the nba at this point. we've beaten everyone there is to beat besides the lakers, and i'm fully confident that we can and will beat the lakers as well. so i guess that's championship material in my eyes.

I'm not sure if it is right, but the answer to that would probably be that the Mavs of that year were more vulnerable to matchups than most one-seeds would be, given that Dirk has trouble with certain defenses (see the Denver series) and Avery wasn't any help in counteracting that. Basically, Nellie took Avery's pants down in that matchup, and in another matchup said deficiency would have been moot.
Just a weird coming together of situations, I guess. And certainly not helped by Avery's weird coaching decisions down the stretch (sit the guys against GS, bench Dampier in Game One, insist on Dirk being Duncan, despite the opponent, and on and on).

We just beat the hell out of 2 of the best teams in the East and you guys are yammering on about a couple of old playoff series?
This team is not those teams. We have a completely different identity now - past performance is not an indicator of future results...
Damn, we look good, even when we don't look as good as we usually do!

It's hardly shocking when a #3 beats a #2 in the second round, but that's about where it ends.

The only major downside I saw tonight: 4 offensive rebounds for the Mavericks, 8 for Dwight Howard...

Nowitzki on FLA sweep: "There are 2 great teams down here but we have said it all year that we are a good road team."

Followill was mentioning something along the lines that their percentages are very solid in terms of rebounding.
Hey, we didn't give up 7 ORebs in one possession, progress...

Well, we were only out-rebounded 40-38 in this game, but the offensive rebounds we didn't get bother me more than the ones we gave up - I expect to give some up in the zone, but we still need to pull down more second chances on the other end...
(although our 50% shooting tonight might've had something to do with it...)

A physics lesson from the Magic announcers, after Hedo's missed dunk in the 4th: "He was pushed in the back by Nowitzki and Kidd. That's why the dunk was short."
Science.

If I never have to listen to those Orlando announcers again it'll be too soon. What a pair of douche-bags.

It's crazy, but I'm honestly not at all sure I even want the Mavs to finish #1 in the conference. The extra home-game is nice (though not even guaranteed), but this team comes into evenly matched series in such a better mindset when they aren't expected to win.
Picturing it now, I like the Mavs' chances much better to steal a Game 1 or 2 in SA or LA than to win both of the first two at home against either of those teams. Either way you're 1-1, but the difference in momentum is huge.

Agreed. And the Heat announcers are so, so good, in my opinion, so it was night and day last night versus tonight.

I didn't say to the contrary. But there are other considerations besides "Game 7 at home," which isn't even close to a sure thing to occur. The strong majority of contested playoff series (forward-looking) don't even go to 7 games.

And the strong majority of those go to the home team.
