Could we have Conley and Whiteside in the same room to negotiate?

Great idea in theory, but these guys need their ego stroked, and should have their own meeting. Thats how "important" each guy is.

Rumors are that Spurs could do a S&T Parker for Conley. Would suck.

Is he married? If he is, can't blame him. I'd be worried too.

I could see why Conley might prefer SA over Dallas. Leonard and LMA would be an enticing situation and I don't see how he would be that threatened by Parker.
And is Dallas really that much more appealing than Memphis? At least he has a fairly young all-star caliber center and Randolph on that team.

It would surprise me if they traded Parker unless of course, he wants to move on. The organization has shown so much loyalty to Duncan, Manu, Parker, and even Danny Green, and the players have reciprocated. Its not impossible, but it would be a departure from their SOP.

Spurs are going to age a lot next season. Besides Leonard and a streaky scoring green. Relying on Aldridge is overrated. Look at how they loss to Oklahoma. They're just about as old as the Mavs now.

Okay but who would be the Spurs starting center? A 45 year old Duncan again or that boban guy who looks like he can only play 20 min a game? Our X factor is Whiteside. And it's all making sense Donnie put his name out there too.

Exactly. Memphis to Dallas is the ultimate lateral move. And if Memphis offers him that 5th year worth 33m, insanity would be the word if he were to choose dallas. Hopefully Mem wont and he feels slighted.

I agree. I think the Mavs have a much better chance at Whiteside.

That's why we need to sign Whiteside as soon as free agency starts -- make it a clear move up for Conley (the same way Wes jumped on board when we got a verbal commitment from Jordan...)

Another potential factor is that Memphis will be breaking in a new head coach. Fizdale might end up being great, but Conley could have reservations about the direction of the franchise, style of play, personality conflicts, and potential for success. At least with the Mavs you have a veteran coach who has lead a team to the championship. Although Fizdale won two championships with the Heat, he was second fiddle to Spoelstra.

I'd say Rick Carlisle is one of the only reasons we even get a meeting with Conley.
I think outside of the obvious defensive team selling point that the Mavs will need something on offense to sell as well...especially since the Griz will still be a very good defensive team if they kept him.

Conley should and would opt out after three years to hit FA again at age 32, so i think this fifth year isnt a huge factor. And also, the Grizzlies are done. Zach 34, Allen 34...

I was thinking the same thing and then I thought he could say the same about us.....Dirk 38, and ????...Matthews 30, Harris 34, Barea 32. To me that 5th year of insurance and Gasol would give them the edge.
That's why I'd say we should get Whiteside committed first and hope that is enough to tip the scales in our favor.
But he may just want a change of scenery....who knows what goes on in these guys' heads during this time of year?

Well, Whiteside told he plans to make a really quick decision, so in a perfect scenario our pitch to Conley is Conley-Wes-Anderson-Dirk-Hassan + 12-14m cap.
Thats a good core for this next three years. Our worst scenario would be early playoff exits. In Memphis Conley is looking at years of lottery.

Dallas is a bigger market than Memphis too. Not sure if that Matters to Conley, but it might... Exposure = money.

Completely agree and that is why Whiteside is the tipping point imo. But if we don't get a commitment form Whiteside, I see no reason why Conley would consider us.
Hate to think about it but if we don't get either of them I think we are looking at years of lottery.

I think it can get even better once we move Dirk into an 6th man role in a couple of years. Which has us weigh good options for the future on who's going to start at PF in future free agency periods. I bet Dirk would be all for it being the 6th man to keep his motivation in playing going past Duncan's age.

I know what you mean and understand the point you are making and I certainly don't mean any disrespect but I had to chuckle at that....it gets better when our best player is 40?
But yeah, we do need to find his replacement soon and that will be a challenge.

You had me at Wes Anderson.

I think the whole market thing is a little overblown... by and large players choose teams that can pay them the most money while also putting them in a position to win games. In that sense, I'd be really surprised if a top-tier free agent chose a team like the Lakers because of the market. I don't think Dallas has any real advantage over Memphis unless Conley just happens to like the city better.

As long as Dirk can still shoot. He can keep it going for who knows how long. So that itself will have him look legendary running off the bench off jumping into any game.

@tim_cato: the Mavericks' pitch to Mike Conley should just be pick-and-roll footage alternating between Mavs Barea and Timberwolves Barea

Maybe the biggest Spurs development tonight: One well-placed source insists San Antonio's free-agent interest in Mike Conley is overstated.

That is my thought. I'd give Conley
85% of staying
10% of coming here
5% of going elsewhere
Whiteside if give:
60% of staying
30% here
10% elsewhere
Both guys are more likely to stay than leave

@espn_macmahon: @Chris_Broussard reports Rockets, Pelicans, Nets, Lakers also interested in Mike Conley.

Half the league is interested in every free agent available with so much cap space.
This weekend is a sport writing click bait dream.

@espn_macmahon: Feels like question with Mike Conley isn't if he would leave $39M on table in Memphis but whether Grizzlies will put it there.

Thats what it comes to between Mavs/Grizz. Rockets seem like the only other threat(barely). Memphis gives him the 5th year, its a wrap. Hell he flew to Gasol last offseason to convince him to stay. He's a loyal guy. Id LOVE to have a guy like that but Im not getting my hopes up.

Seems like it'd be sown up by now if they were offering the 5th year. Why would they risk letting him meet with other teams? Not saying he's coming but we are meeting with him. Chances are maybe 80-20 he stays? If we can secure Whiteside things could get interesting. We have to hope that Conley is legit interested and not just using us as leverage.

I must admit I haven't been a Grizzlies fan and watched any of their games except when they play the Mavs. But looking at Conley's stats, is he really a max player? Does he have intangibles that don't show up? Because I hate to say it, but his stats are pretty similar to Chandler Parson's when he was healthy last year ... or maybe even not quite as good.
