He's a contributor, and an exceedingly capable one at that when he's not overused. If he could only give 24 minutes a night of up-tempo offense and decent defense, I'd still take it. If the team does resign Steve in the offseason, they just need to make sure they have a solid backup at point who's capable of giving the team 20+ solid minutes a night at the position (an Eric Snow type would be great, IMO).

Agreed steve just isn't the kind of guy who can take over a game by himself. He can't get his shot off unless folks are worried about assists. He's a wonderful compliment to dirk/finley and anyone.
It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he gets.

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
I can't believe an objective observer could have watched the last play and put the blame on Steve for not making that shot. It was obvious that the inbound pass was the culprit. It was unfortunate because you couldn't have asked for a better defensive breakdown with .5 seconds left. If the pass had been thrown correctly it would have almost been an alley oop. Not only was Steve not properly lead with the pass but it was also severely overthrown.

Wow.
I've watched that play a half dozen times and I didn't see anything other than an effective pass. Maybe it was because NASH blew the shot and he seems to get a pass around here...
Why don't YOU watch the play objectively?

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
It was a good pass, but I also was hoping that Nash would be led a bit more towards the bucket. He had a clear path to the rim.
However, you only have a certain amount of time to get the inbounds pass off. Perhaps the passer didn't have the opportunity to wait another split second. Regardless, I don't think there's alot of room to throw around blame on the last play.

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
Well he definately shouldn't have posted up on Rafer in the closing seconds of the 4th against Miami to try to win it. He spends all his time driving and dishing and then decides to post up when the basket is needed most, I didn't understand that at all...

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
Nash had to jump away from the rim and against his momentum to catch the ball. No wonder he shot an airball. This is obvious if you look at the angle from behind the basket. Nash had a clear path to the basket and was on a dead sprint for the bucket. I realize that it is a tough pass to make, and you can't blame the loss on the last play, but the passer was more to blame than the shooter on the last possesion.

You are so right. Every player has their weaknesses. If being innefective after 40+ minutes is his weakest point, he must be a pretty dang good player. He's not the team's franchise player either, but he is one of the best contributors on this team. Besides, we've all seen how this team plays without him...

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
Sensational....
But the biggest issue in the offseason is re-signing Steve...
If it's 4 year at Max that's one thing.
If it's 7 years at max that's completely different.

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
OUTSTANDING game by Nash tonight - if he wasn't completely ON tonight we would have lost the game. I agree with OP - 4 years at the max is a great contract for both parties but I wouldn't be too upset at 5 years.

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
Goodness...does anyone know what the one game record is for assists ?
(Clue: It's the same as the IQ of a Boston fan on our board)

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
I wondered if my thread would resurface after last night's beautiful performance.
It should be abundantly clear to all Mavericks fans that Steve is pivotal to everything we hope to accomplish in the playoffs this postseason.

RE:In praise of Steve Nash...
That has got to be the best game he's ever had against the Kings.
The Kings had absolutely no answer for the Mavs running and cutting style.
