plus...prestige can't be the best movie in the last year because The Departed absolutely kicked ass.
nonetheless, i've really become a big Christian Bale fan, and I look forward the next batman movie too.
cheers

Sorry. I liked it better than the Departed.

I can't think of too many movies that came out last year, but 2 off the top of my head i thought were better were The Departed and V for Vendetta.

The Departed I can understand. Don't agree, but I understand.
However, The Prestige >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> V for Vendetta.

the prestige was a signifigantly better movie. i can understand saying v was more entertaining which is what im guessing he meant but it was most definitely not a better movie.

How so?
EDIT TO ADD-- The only thing i can say The Prestige has over V for Vendetta is the writing. And i think that has more to do with the fact that V was based off a graphic novel. And the screenwriters for the movie couldn't stray away too far from the novel.

V = huge disappointment.
I expected much and received little.

I really liked The Prestige, but I would rate V for Vendetta over it as well.
The Departed was head and shoulders above either one, though.

the departed was a basic cop movie with great actors...well directed and acted but I've seen the idea too many times to think too highly of it...
V was pretty preachy and overall the action was stiff and rediculous...oh really, the dude with knifes beats all the guards with automatics?...that is dumb.
The prestige however was creative and kept me guessing the entire moive...the acting was strong and the direction was crisp. Overall I found it to be one of the most unique films I've seen in a while...

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. The Departed was greatness. I'm not sure what cop movie you've seen with an ending like that, other than the movie they adapted this movie from.
And V was a comic movie, it was supposed to be ridiculous.

There was nothing creative to me about The Prestige. I mean, they do magic; wow. And you call it unique and kept you guessing when some of the people in this thread (including me) predicted the end.
And you call part of V ridiculous. Something i thought was pretty ridiculous was 1. the fact that both magicians have look-alikes and 2. how both magicians kept calling each other to be volunteers without noticing each other.
EDIT TO ADD-- Another movie i thought was better was Casino Royale.

I really wanted to like V but it was a letdown. The long monologue where every word began with the letter "V" was downright annoying.
edit: oh yeah, everybody is wrong about Presitige. The problem wasn't that Christian Bale's character had an identical twin that we didn't know about until the very end--the problem was that Tesla invented a super-duper clone making machine. The Tesla sci-fi nonsense just didn't mesh with the rest of the movie. All that and Scarlette Johannson never shows her boobies.

Ok, for the 3rd time, i actually enjoyed The Prestige. I just don't think there's anything special about it. You and i can watch movies differently all we want, but it doesn't change the fact there was nothing special about the movie.

It comes down to a matter of taste. I wouldn't say you're wrong for not seeing anything special, as that's your opinion. But it's certainly not a fact that there was nothing special.
However, I thought it was extremely well-written, well-directed, well-acted. The alternating timelines was certainly a standout (I know it's been done, but it was done very well here). The twist wasn't supposed to be a completely out there situation, like an m. Night movie, which relies on the twist. The twist was simply part of the story.
As I mentioned before in the thread, the sci-fi aspect was treading on thin ice, but I actually thought it didn't hurt the film at all. Maybe didn't add to it, but certainly didn't hurt it.

christian bale's total devlotion to the craft -- that was a good story line. Scarlette J as the woman scorned -- good story line. jackmann as the guy obsessed with one-upping bale -- that was good.
but the tesla sci fi stuff...it just didn't fit at all. it wasn't just a twist in the story, it was a bad twist.
....it's kinda like this: Caine's character lays out the laws of the universe for the movie -- magic tricks have rational, natural explanations. The Tesla stuff went way outside of the movie's self-imposed laws. That Tesla's stuff was called "science" is utterly besides the point -- it was just "hocus-pocus hoodoo voodoo magic." The hocus-pocus hoodoo voodoo magic had no place in the movie.

Okay, 5-0 just explained what I was having problems with so I'll remove my post just so that no one has the movie spoiled for them.
