It takes a few episodes before it really takes off. By episode 6 or so, you'll be hooked.

My wife has been making me watch Eli Stone, the show that comes on after Lost.
I resisted at first, and I'm still not sure how "quality" it is, but I have to say, it's pretty darn enjoyable.

Yeah my wife tried that, but when LOST is over she heads upstairs, and the HDTV gets tuned to TNT for basketball, or some kind of hockey.

South Park can be amusing, but most of the time it's just too...I don't know...just too much. Too crude, or too over the top. Very obvious. It's funny, but it bothers me.
I like the comedy of Futurama the best. I think it's a little smarter than the Simpsons and Family Guy.
But not laughing at the simpsons....yeah I just don't get that. Maybe we're all predisposed to think it's funny from our youth or something (you're younger than me by a few years I think ffo) but I continue to think it's very funny.

I figured you were of the southpark/familyguy ilk if you didn't like the greatest comedy of all time.
are you late teens or very early 20s?

yeah I'm 19, almost 20.
southpark during the first 4-5 seasons was very crude and over the top I agree, but it has gotten ridiculously funny over the past few seasons.

that makes more sense...you grew up on shows that stand on the simpsons shoulders...and rip the simpsons off.
never watched southpark for more than a couple minutes at a time...I'm sure it is VERY funny, but it was always too offensive.
I think family guy is one of the funniest shows of all time...but I stopped watching that as well...
I agree with flac that Futurama has better characters than the simpsons (other than Homer, who is the greatest tv character of all time in my opinion)...I don't think there is another show with 4 characters better than Fry, Bender, Dr. Zoidberg, the professor...

Bizzare foods with andrew zimmern on the travel channel. Some of that stuff looks tasty.
Always good to watch the food network channel when you're hungry, too.

I grew up a Simpsons diehard, but like a lot of other people, the last 5 or so seasons don't really do it for me. They still have some flashes of their previous greatness, but it's a lot more miss these days than hit. This is coming from a guy who has the first 10 seasons on DVD and has watched them all as much as humanly possibly. Unfortunately, I don't know how much farther I will be going with the DVD collection after that.
I've never really gotten into Family Guy. Just never understood the appeal of it. Way too many cutscenes that aren't that funny to begin with, but you are supposed to laugh because they are cutscenes (so they have to be comedy gold, right?). Strangely enough, I'm actually a really big fan of McFarlane's other show - American Dad. None of those cutscenes, and I think the Stan Smith character really has some great moments.
I really didn't give South Park much of a chance because of the crude humor until this year, but I've really come around on that show. Yes, the crude humor is there, but it's not as bad as I thought, and there's plenty of genius humor to make up for it. I've only watched the more recent seasons so I can't speak for much earlier than Season 6 or 7. But yeah, I've become a fan of that show.
Anyways, that's my take on the adult comedy cartoons out there. Can't really say much about Futurama because I never have taken much time to watch it.

Yes, American Dad is far more plot-driven than family guy. while some of the cutscenes in Family Guy are funny, you're dead on about most of them - they're supposed to be funny just cause it's a random reference?
you have got to watch the south park episode where they rip on Family Guy. Priceless and all too true.

I think it's the opposite. I have my DVR programed to record Family Guy every time it comes on, re-run or not, and I can hardly watch the 99' and 00' shows after seeing the post 05's.
I will say that that new shows are a lot more edgy and borderline offensive.
As far as the cut away's, they're hit and miss just like any other joke. I never got the impression that you were supposed to laugh "because" it was a cut away.
I thought the South Park attack came across as petty jealously. Seemed like the writers were saying that they could be as funny as Family Guy's writers if they weren't constrained by having to make all their jokes relevant to the plot. That may or may not be true but that's the bit and it works for them. I don't get how that's a knock on the show. I also think that they were way off base with the assertion that the cut away's are the only funny part of the show. I typically laugh more at the plot driven jokes.

i don't care if you're a family guy fan or not (i do like the show, i watch it, south park, and american dad), the manatee joke in south park was spot on.
i never said you're supposed to laugh simply because it's a cut away. Many of the cutaways are not jokes - they're simply a reference or a direct copy of scenes from other shows/movies/etc., just with the Family Guy characters. The assumption there is that it's funny just cause it's a reference.

I really think South Park is genius. Think about it - without all of that crude humor they wouldn't be able to get away with all of the offensive subject matter that the show addresses. How could a Scientologist argue that South Park is seriously offensive when they follow a Scientology joke with a scene involving a talking piece of feces? They purposefully put in the toilet humor so people don't take the show too seriously, even when they're addressing very serious topics. It's brilliant - they get to talk sh*t about anyone and everyone they want to, so long as they throw in a poop joke now and then.

Webisodes, all of shows I like...
Quote:
NBC is planning to air original webisodes of Chuck, The Office, and Heroes on the Internet. According to Variety, more NBC shows will then soon follow suite starting with 30 Rock.
NBC Digital Entertainment's Vivi Zigler stated, "We're incredibly lucky to have such collaborative writers, producers and actors to work with." The Office had previously run a successful series of webisodes that were dubbed The Accountants, featuring many of the cast members. But when residuals from web content became an issue, the series quit producing its original webisodes.
NBC's Ben Silverman stated, "The strike did resolve our issues with our chief creative partners. Now we have terms of business with them, we can do webisodes, integration. We're able to talk to them without the elephant in the room. We can create with them openly and freely."
The webisodes are currently being produced for web broadcasting this July.

I've started on John Adams, the miniseries on HBO.
Through two episodes, I'm ready to declare it sheer genious.

I should probably throw the caveat out that they are not Band of Brothers. There is little to no actual war in them from what I've read.
But man, they are just so well done. I defy anyone who loves this country to watch the second episode, centered around the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence, and not get at least slightly emotional. It's moving.

Time transitions are a little weak but I am enjoying them all the same. There are factual errors too, but Giamatti does an outstanding job. I didn't see Laura Linney as meshing with Paul but they have an on screen chemistry that works really well.... especially the strong headed caretaker that Abigail was. I think she portrays her perfectly.
