Let's get Nerlens here. Hoping to see him bought out over the next few days.

I feel very strongly we are one move away. We just desperately need that big that can anchor the middle and guard on the perimeter. Even someone like Capela could make a huge difference on defense.

Beverly is over the hill as is Danny Green. Barton is the only one that makes sense right now. Hopefully not another "mavs interested...signs with another team" embarrassment.

Spurs released Stanley Johnson. Wouldn't mind a flyer on him.

Stanley Johnson worries me. He's one of the worst defensive guys on a team that is 30th in the league in defense. His defensive win share is worse than Bertans.
He's a nice 3pt shooter, but he only has the 3 of the 3/D and that is what has Wood getting inconsistent minutes.

IMO it?s utterly impossible to separate DRTG from a bad defensive team. A good DRTG on a bad defensive team means a lot. A bad DRTG on a bad defensive team is borderline meaningless.
In this scenario, I would defer to his body of work and reputation as a strong and willing defender, rebounder, and hustler.

It doesn't mean a heck of a lot-- guys on good defensive teams will look good and guys on bad defensive teams will look bad.
Still, he's ranked like 13th out of 15 Spurs players. Even among the players on that team, I think there is reason to be concerned.
Still, maybe Kidd can make him a 26-yo project or maybe being here will motivate him. It is hard to be motivated when the rest of the team doesn't care

We just need a guy to fill in for brickhouse Tim. Don't see some defensive juggernaut being available.

Btw Stanleys 3 point percentage of 38% is with him avg 1.3 attempts per game this season.
I?m not sure it holds

Stein: Mavs to pursue Justin Holiday if bought out.

IMO
1) Noel - switching big who would probably run the floor for easy offense
2) Johnson - bigger, physical forward who can rebound and bang inside/ outside
3) Holiday - veteran perimeter defender but falling off a little with age

Like him better than Ross as a veteran presence. Solid pickup. Still think Noel and Johnson would ultimately have been more useful on the court.

Hopefully it?s Justin for Frank
Green is officially our third guard/ball handler and Frank has been bad creating.
We need 3/D and Justin is a mature defender with decent numbers defensively who can hit the three at 35-36%

Think Id rather kick the tires on Stanley since he?s still young, but I?m not really familiar with him or Holiday tbh. Has Noel been bought out? I keep seeing his name brought up, but haven?t seen an official report.

Almost zero interest in anyone who is not a big being added to this team.

Well buyouts rarely provide much, if he can hit an open 3 and play respectable defense if he's ever called upon then that's fine.

I assume Silva will be the odd man out if the Mavs sign Holiday? I sure hope its not Morris. Assuming they do not add any "bigs", Kidd better start playing Morris to see if he can grab some rebounds and play the role of enforcer in the paint. I guess Frank is the other option to make room on the roster for Holiday.

Brian Windhorst: Justin Holiday has agreed to a buyout arrangement with the Houston Rockets and plans to sign with the Dallas Mavericks when he clears waivers, sources told ESPN. via Twitter WindhorstESPN
Tim MacMahon: Justin Holiday was the top player on the Mavs potential buyout list. Fills a need for a 3-and-D wing off the bench. via Twitter espn_macmahon
See, the MBT was able to get their "first choice" after all!

Wing depth is most important if you want insurance for Bullock and Green defensively and to potentially eat into THJ wing minutes. I do agree that it would be nice to add a quality depth big but the resurgence of McGee and eventual return of Maxi might temper them unless something fall in their lap.

That's a fine bid for optimism, but it's not coming at the cost of THJ, it's coming at the cost of Green / Hardy and justified as "veteran". If it happens, like everything else, I'll hold out hope until Kidd screws the pooch.

Our best bet is that Hardy becomes a 2 way player like Green, asap. Add all the defensive wings you want, if they don't have the offense to go with it, they aren't going to be on the floor when it matters.

I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt Hardy will ever be a good defensive player. He seems to me like a Jason Terry or Nick Van Exel type- born to score and not do much else.

It's year 1. He's already improved this season. I have no idea what to expect but that's what we need.

Mavs should have traded for Poeltl
Is there a team with worse bigs in the entire NBA? The rebuilding Nets? Hard to find one.

The Mavericks, league sources say, believed on Saturday that they had a verbal commitment from Terrence Ross for the veteran swingman to join them after securing a buyout from Orlando. While Dallas was playing in Sacramento on Saturday night, Ross committed to signing with Phoenix upon clearing waivers instead. ? via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com

And you know why? Phx had more money to offer. We couldn't offer more because of the Javale contract. The gift that keeps on giving.
Still shitty that players think it's cool to reneg on us though. Very embarrassing that a team with two of the best players in basketball has a reneg from a has been on Orlando.

I prefer Holiday to Ross personally, especially if he can't keep his word.

I hope I'm right and you're wrong lol but I could see Hardy getting the short end as I think Green is here to stay and has claimed his minutes
Last night was a good reminder of the need for an interior presence...EL might not be too far off on Poetl
