We went from "he's not even the best player on his team" to "he's certainly not a top-20 player" to "is he a top-10 player?" to "at this rate, he might be considered for the MVP race" to "there are only 4 players in the MVP race and Luka's one of them" to "the only reason he might not win MVP is because he's 20 years old and you just can't pass over previous MVPs still playing at a high level like Giannis, LeBron, and Harden without careful consideration" in a damn hurry... We're , what, a month or so into the season? At this rate they'll be creating a Super Galactic MVP award just to accommodate Luka.

Honestly I think Mavs will need to finish the season as a top 3 team and those other 3 guys will need to stumble for Luka to have any chance of winning MVP.

I honestly think if Luka can develop better chemistry with KP, then that would really help his cause.

I think the Mavs wont beat the record of the Bucks and Giannis is doing the same stuff Luka is doing WITH better defense.
Giannis is still the MVP for me

When was Luka not the best player on the team? That seems like an odd take.

I saw a lot of non-Mavs fans saying that after we signed KP and during the preseason... I don't think they watched much of Luka's rookie season.

Apparently not. As unique as Porzingis is, he hasn’t ever shown the dynamism that Luka possesses. At least with the way the league favors ball handlers now.

Too bad MVP voting doesn't work like Highlander rules -- he's defeated Harden, LeBron, Davis... There can be only one!

@DwainPrice: Dirk on Luka: “I thought he was going to have a little tougher transition in Year 2 just because he was so phenomenal last year with all the triple-doubles. I thought people were just going to really hone in on him, but he’s even gotten better."

Giannis not doing what Luka doing on offense anymore than Luka doing on defense vs. Giannis. In fact if you look at NBA Math total points added model Luka is so out in front on offense vs. Giannis that Giannis defense advantage cant overcome Luka's O advantage.

Definitely possible, although with Harden scoring 60 in only 3 quarters the other night, I feel like he'll get it.

slightly off topic...
Saw Hamilton finally - amazing musical if you haven't had the chance to watch it or listen to the soundtrack. If anyone knows someone who makes highlight reels... would love to see one of Luka and the Mavs set to the song "My Shot"

sorry wrong link...
i meant to post the mixtape version which is a modern lyric remake version. the first link is the original.
sample lyric which is pertinent to our modern day mavs (so glad that we never have had that super team banana boat nonsense):
"When opportunity knock, you don't send anyone to get it
Answer the door, welcome it, let it in or regret it
They said if you can't beat 'em you join 'em
I said, "Forget it"
'Cause once you join 'em you're buildin' a ceilin' the way you're headed"

Trae Young is 'bothered' by the consistent comparisons to Luka Doncic
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/t...o-luka-doncic/
Quote:
"Yeah. For me, it bothers me -- I just love playing basketball, I know he does," Young said, via ESPN. "So it bothers me because it's annoying just getting asked about it all the time. But I know it comes with it. I didn't ask for it to happen, but it happened. ... It's two totally different situations, two totally different players. He's playing well, I'm playing well. Just let it be."

I actually don't know why people are still going on about the Trae Young thing. I mean, it's not like Young and Luka will ever go head to head in the playoffs unless it's in the finals or Young switches teams. The Mavs are winning and the Hawks aren't is about the only measuring stick I even care about.
And objectively, Young/Reddish is still a lot better than what Sacramento and Phoenix did in flat out passing on him...

Yep. Atlanta did very well in that draft, even if they missed out on the best player, and that’s even if Reddish doesn’t develop. Drafting is hard.

I think the fact that Trae Young IS so good is why people are still talking about him and Luka. If he was just another decent-ish young player, people would still give Atlanta sh*t for passing on Luka, but you wouldn't have constant comparisons between the two players. That and the simple fact that they were traded for each other sort of makes a narrative that's easier media fodder than two other teams simply passing on Luka.
Let's not totally let Atlanta off the hook though. Yeah, they got a hell of a player, but the reason people are giving them hell is because the evidence was plainly visible that Luka was a generational talent the best player in that draft. It wasn't like Luka was some mystery man who there were only whispers about his potential, like Dirk was back in the day. It's like they traded Lebron for Carmelo.

Btw, from now on whenever people complain about Luka's supposed lack of "athleticism," can we please all show them this picture of James "Dad Bod" Harden, and remind them that this is the most statistically dominant scorer since Wilt f*cking Chamberlain?

There's a good bit on this Simmons podcast comparing Luka to Harden in a favorable way. The first 20 minutes of this podcast are basically Simmons and his friend talking about how even though the Rockets are good, they're really hard to watch and easy to dislike. They then compare Luka to Harden, saying Luka is like Harden 2.0, but he's possibly better and definitely far more fun to watch because he actually gets his teammates involved- as opposed to the Rockets' offense, which is basically everyone standing around while Harden gets to the FT line.
