Maybe the Mavs trying to get Billups after being amnestied.
They need a backup that is able to play at least 20min and also start some games.

We lost one of the best centers in the NBA. If no team under the cap bids for him (highly unlikely), he'll sign with Miami.

I don't think so personally. For the first time in a while, the Lakers have become a pretty small team.
Heat are the odds on favorite. Knicks are very, very good as well.
Melo/Stat/Chandler is a damn good front line.

Paul to Lakers done?!
WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Correction: The proposed deal to the Lakers is Chris Paul for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, source says.
So Dwight for Bynum later this season?!

No. IMO that trade makes them even weaker. Sure, having Paul is nice, but.... Their biggest asset was their frontcourt depth. With Paul/Odom gone, who's playing PF? Their bench is weak as hell after this trade.

If it's Odom/Pau....christ. They'll trade Bynum for Dwight and it'll be Heat-Lakers for the next 6-8 years.

So the NBA runs and owns the Hornets and they trade Paul to the Lakers without getting the BEST asset back?

Orlando's managers must be on crack if they do this.

Interesting...so when does the league take over Orlando, memphis, milwaukee, Minnesota, Sacramento?
They will need some more chips to move around.

Sounds familiar. Like the Gasol trade a couple of years back. Stern couldn't accept it to watch Kobe not making the PO's in 2005 and getting busted in 2006 and 2007. Thus, he gifted him Gasol. Now Kobe failed again and he gets Paul.

So it looks like when the great Free Agent Class of 2012 comes along, all the free agents will have already been traded. Why is it that, whenever the Mavs plan on something like this, they end up with the dregs that are left after all the great players sign elsewhere.
We got lucky last year, when one of the leftovers turned out to be Tyson Chandler, who just happened to be healthy and the perfect fit. He anchors the championship defense, then we decide he's not worth keeping. God is upstairs going "you want to miracles in a row? Wasn't the last one good enough? What do expect from me?"
Its not too late Mark. With Chandler, we are competitive on defense for the next 4 years. Unless we get Howard, the defense will suffer, and probably cost you as many points as whatever 2nd class star we end up with will add.
12 million for 5 years would get it done. If you need flexibity next year, dump Marion and Haywood.
Grab a DVd and watch Tyson defend in the playoffs. Then remember about those all stars. "They are just not that into you."

NOW it's a 3 team trade again apparently...
Paul to Lakers, Gasol to Rockets, Odom, Kmart, Scola to NO.

It's not like we had anything to trade for Paul. If they can't get Howard, i'm not sure that's a great move for them. They lost Gasol (who got very underrated after one abysmal series) AND probably their 3rd most impactful player. They lost 2 guys from their most important 3. If they can get Howard though, it's game over. But Otis cannot be that stupid, can he? The Lakers has no leverage, non. They don't have capspace.

10 minutes ago I thought it wasn't possible that L.A. gets their hands on Paul or Howard without including Bynum in the deal. The package New Orleans gets back from Houston is pretty solid though. Still L.A. the winner here ... as always.

I would like to say it's unlikely they can build a package around Bynum for Howard, but it's the Lakers. They tend to do whatever they want on the trade market, and other teams (sans some of the big dogs like Boston, NY, and Dallas) repeatedly bend over the countertop and let them do it.

Caplan brought up an interesting point:
If this all pans out (the LA angle looks like it will, NY is appearing to fill out)...what will Deron do?

Convince Chandler to re-sign with Dallas for a low enough price for him to jump on board?

Yeah ... well ... not that it would matter anyway
Another funny tidbit: Clippers could have had Paul but weren't willing to surrender Gordon for him. Now they overpay Butler and Paul plays for the local rival.

So the Rockets are stupid enough to make the Paul/Kobe/Dwight team possible with solving the hardest part for the Lakers (getting Paul without giving up Bynum).
So when they are planning to beat the Lakers the next time in the playoffs? 2018?

Seems that way. Can't really blame the Hornets too much with the package they receive. But Hoston only needed a C in free agency to really make a huge leap forward and end up with Pau (minus Scola, minus Martin) ?!?
