Who needs the 2018 pick when you already have a franchise center waiting to eat lukewarm hot dogs cooked last week?

Haven't had a chance to watch the games since he's been back... what's everyone's thoughts about how he's played?
Also, now that he's back, what are the chances that we bring him back in next year? Now that he's up and running, is he still a good fit like we had originally envisioned?

Even if we want him back, he is gone. He's a solid backup and whatever we offer he can find from another team.

And if he doesnt find it somewhere and our is the best offer he would be (again) a moron not to take it because he is (again) butthurt.
He has to take the most money. If that comes from us, he will take it.

He is energetic, and has a lot of range and bounce, but he doesn't seem to be progressing much on the issues that have plagued him for a while -- hands, boxing out, gambling too much. Honestly, bearing in mind the likely price difference, I'd rather keep Salah.

Yeah, I'd say his play since his return (albeit in small sample size theater) he's earned a role as our primary backup big... his fundamentals are still pretty rotten. I'd be cool with giving him a contract somewhere in the Powell range, provided it doesn't prevent us from making a deal with a much better player.

Now he's definitely playing for the midlevel or less, and it's golden proof that he has been the problem all along.

I guess we should be really glad he decided to bet on himself and turned down that 4yr/$70mil contract. What a dumbass.

This reeks of Larry Sanders except that Sanders was a much better player. These bigs who get carried by their size need to realize that their head has to be in it.

Nowitzki has long set a self-deprecating tone that shows every newcomer no one is bigger than the team. He is merciless in mocking everyone and happy when people toss insults back. "You should learn Chinese because you'll be in China soon," is one of his favorite ways of needling someone after a bad game.

This. Rules are rules and especially to be followed if you're trying to bet on yourself and cash in this offseason.
However, I'd be very open to bringing Noel back, draft depending, since it shouldn't take much...

Yeah, I'm all about the eventual legalization and freedom to smoke weed for everyone, but Noel is sending a clear message here. He won't be back in a Mavs uniform. You can count on that.
Edit: The team isn't going to keep Noel in wake of their already dwindling reputation as a franchise. They pride themselves on being a "community" team. He won't be back.

@espn_macmahon: Nerlens Noel's tenure with the Mavericks didn't go as anyone hoped, but at least he went out on a high note.

The five game suspension came after the 3rd failed test. Means Noel had two strikes, he knew what would happen after the 3rd strike, he knew his FA comes up...and he couldnt keep the joint in his pocket.
Thats just stupid and mentally weak as hell. Yeah let him walk...together with his landlord story and the trashed house etc....no thanks

Finally people can stop with the gymnastic spins of how this entire debacle was ever going to lead to him returning a following season or end up well for him. He’s a backup that will be lucky to pull an MLE contract now.

At least he was honest about his commitment to basketball and stated basketball isn’t his life and he has other passions.

Just going to leave this here... RC on Noel suspension
"I'm very disappointed for him. He's had a great six weeks since he came back. He's raised the level of his everything. His focus, concentration, work level, energy level. ... he's proven to me that he's a guy that fits into a winning system in this league. ... In terms of the suspension, one thing I would say is I admire him very much. He came to me after the Sacramento game (March 27) and he wanted to talk man-to-man. He informed me of it. He was contrite and what I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt is this guy has been a terrific guy to be around. He's absolutely no problem. He's in a good mood all the time. And the fact that he came to me seven, eight days ago got even more of my respect."

I can see Noel back on a cheap deal, especially if Bagley or Porter is the pick, or Doncic or even JJJ. I can also see him not on the Mavs due to this being the last straw. We can take Rick's comments as genuine or just saving face for Noel a bit heading into FA, we won't ever truly know.

I think Rick is ultimately saying those things to help Noel land another contract. It won't be with the Mavs though. Wish it would have worked out, but it didn't. Luckily Noel didn't sign the contract we offered him.

Nerlens is probably looking at another one-year "prove it" kind of deal next season, except this time it will probably be for even less money. I'm just not sure if he'll sign with a team like GSW/SAS with a great coach and a stable system that can provide a consistent (albeit likely limited) role, or if he'll go to a lottery type of team that he can get more minutes on like the Nets or Hawks or someone like that.
All things considered, I would be totally fine bringing him back here for another year to see if he and Rick can get on the same page and we can have another go at molding him into our backup center. He is very far from a perfect player, but I like how disruptive he can be on defense, even if he makes almost as many mistakes as good plays. I kind of view him as a defensive big version of a volume bench shooter, where he can have value in the right role but shouldn't be a 30mpg guy because of the mistakes.

Isn't he from Boston? Or at least close to it iirc. I think he could likely end up there as well.
