Las Vegas Summer League: West Preview
By DJ Foster
ESPN.com
(rest of article and other teams at this link http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/pos...west-preview-2)
The Las Vegas Summer League is a basketball oasis. It's a place for elbows to be rubbed, for deals to be brokered, for top draft picks to display their skills and for guys chasing the dream to show someone -- anyone -- that they can play in the league. Here's a look at the names to know in the Western Conference.
Dallas Mavericks
Jae Crowder:
A much better offensive player than initially advertised, Crowder is a guy who can knock in a 3 and cover three positions on the other end. Crowder plays with a certain kind of chaotic poise, which fits perfectly with the oxymoronic nature of summer league.
Ricky Ledo:
You’ll hear plenty of alumni shout, “he should have stayed another year!” but no one can kvetch quite like the fine folks in Providence, who didn’t even get to see Ledo play once due to academic probation. A basketball vagabond in high school, Ledo is one big question mark.
Shane Larkin:
The son of Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin has some silly athletic genes, as he blew everyone away by registering a 44-inch vertical at the combine. Larkin is a pick-and-roll ready point guard in the half court and a speed demon in transition, and this may be his best chance to show off his stuff with Jose Calderon and Devin Harris blocking his playing time once he leaves Las Vegas.
.

Yea, the tornament is a pretty cool idea.
I'm interested in dedmon. He looks to have a nice stroke and seems pretty athletic.

Ledo looks like he has some solid ball handling skill and some decent moves to the basket. Might pan out...

I get the idea that if Ledo had been patient and dominated the high school level a la LeBron and had one good year in college or overseas, he'd have been drafted in the top five. He was a top prospect coming out of high school and then disappeared from the radar after not playing at all. He could be a giant dick, a giant star or both.

Well, Larkin broke his ankle in practice. Out 2-3 months. Bummer for him.

Wow. Glad we got the guard position covered. Feel bad for him.
(And I still think Dieng would have made ridiculous sense right now)

If JJB and Rob Stark had a baby, it would look like Mekel.

Good god that was a sweet oop! Mekel is playing like Kidd out there. Ledo ain't bad either with the highlight block and the sweet drop off pass.

If you rent watching this game, you are missing out. We're on pace for an upset and a very fun game to watch. Bazemore is killer but were getting it done against the 1st seed and we are seeded like 16th

Damn. Carmichael with a sweet move inside and hen a block but they recover from out of hounds to get the dunk and go up 1 with 10s left. This game is sick.

Damn. Ledo with a sweet look but came up just a little short. Not bad against the 1 seed without James and crowder.

This was quite an entertaining game. Mavs were up by 14 in the 4th at one point. That huge Bazemore poster dunk pretty much fired them up.

I wouldn't mind having this guy on our roster. 12 points 7 rebounds 7 blocks in todays game. Great follow up from previous game of 23 & 9.

I only caught part of the game, but I'd like to see both Mekel and Carmichael at camp. As I understand it, Mekel is pretty much a lock for that.

Mekel's got guaranteed money to the best of my knowledge, so he should be a lock for camp and the final 15-man roster.
Agree that Carmichael looks worthy of a camp invite.

I actually must have missed that he was guaranteed, so that's my bad. Thanks for the correction.
In that case, though, let me take it one step further: I'd like to see him play throughout the year. Obviously as the third guy, of course. Dunno if it'll happen, but I think he has some tools and the Mavs need to Barea him and just let him play and learn through his mistakes.

Thought Mekel signed a three year deal? I've been watching him to assess what he's going to bring, not knowing that he was fighting for a camp invite.
Carmichael is a sweet player. Good mobility in the post and good ability to finish inside. He's also been out best big but that isn't saying much with James underperforming and then out sick and ndiaye and Dedmon being stiffs. Still, he seems very polished for his age and he's worth another look. You can't put up 12pts, 7teb, 7 blocks in. "Postseason" game and not get at least a look or two. Add to that his clutch shot with 30sec left to give us our last lead and the clutch block that almost ended the game in our favor and he's shown a mature game.

No, your instinct was right--I was wrong. GMC corrected me. I completely missed both that he was actually signed and that he (apparently) had a presser. I think I was preoccupied that week with both massive work days and obsessing about Dwight.

In your opinion, does Carmichael have a shot to make the Mavs roster? And if so, please give a brief scouting report on him for those of us who have yet to see any summer league.

Carmichael looks to be at least as good as Sarge. I don't see how those two aren't competing for the backup/3rd spot.
Mekel is definitely going to be at camp and playing in the reg season.

Dude has some serious hops - he blocks and boards like a madman, and can do damage in the paint... If he makes the roster, it could be as a secondary backup to Dirk (behind Marion), which would make for a completely different skillset at the position. If he was a little bigger, he'd probably be a center.
BG wrote a bit about him the other day: http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/maver...most-of-chance

BG (and other's) very high on Mekel. I'm trying not to get too excited (considering the low degree of talent/organization he has faced thus far.
BUT....I do tend to think that a player of his particular playmaking talents would look better with better teammates/competition.
I've got fingers crossed for both he and Carmichael.
