Yes that was quite the oversight on my part. I would like to amend my statement to include, "with the notable exception of person or persons who may be excommunicado."

Hollinger’s NBA Division Previews: The Rockets should rule the Southwest
Quote:
The Mavericks’ post-Dirk rebuild still looks half-finished, but the pieces they’ve already accumulated may be enough to propel the Mavs back into the postseason. The Luka Doncic-Kristaps Porzingis combination is the obvious headline, but Dallas has sneakily acquired several high-value second-line players – guys like Dwight Powell, Max Kleber and Delon Wright – who significantly improve its projection.
Those three aren’t household names, but their analytics suggest they’re more valuable than many brand-name starters. Even with a conservative projection for Porzingis, this team appears massively deeper than Portland and potentially packs more top-end talent than San Antonio. Plus, they have Boban. Everyone loves Boban.

2019-20 NBA League Pass Rankings
Quote:
6. DALLAS MAVERICKS (36)
You could say I am excited for the Luka Doncic-Kristaps Porzingis pairing -- and for Porzingis to play his first real game in 19 months. They should complement each other on both ends, with minimal overlap on offense. Both can work mismatches from the block and space the floor.
Doncic is already one of the league's dozen best passers, and that might be conservative. At 6-7, he can see over defenses and whip LeBronian crosscourt lasers. He slings those bad boys when defenders are leaning the wrong way, and if they're not, Doncic will trick them off-balance with lookaway fakes.
He relishes crunch time. Doncic hit 48% of his shots in the last three minutes of games with the score within three points, eighth best among 40 guys who compiled at least 25 such attempts.
Seth Curry has hit 45% from deep in two of the past three seasons, and he's a manipulative little thief on defense -- baiting rubes into passes he can swipe.
Jalen Brunson is built like a fire hydrant and tucks the ball in traffic like a running back. You cannot take your eyes off of Hollywood's Boban Marjanovic.
Rick Carlisle teams always run pleasing half-court offenses. Now the Mavs need to squeeze more from fast breaks. They were basically the inverse Kings last season: efficient in the half court, bricktastic in transition.
At long last, the Mavericks are beginning to overhaul their milquetoast art -- starting with those one-legged fading Dirks shaded into the opposite corners of their court. I mean, come on. That's amazing. Stay tuned for more.
By the way: Can we get Dirk as an occasional guest on the broadcast? He kills it on the mic every time.

You know it's a different season when Lowe ranks us so high and O'Conner makes a special trip here to cover us.

No, Carlisle has not been body-snatched by a self-care guru, he’s just adapting to a new generation of players. “Rick is a lot more touchy-feely … just a lot lower key,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told me. “He’s always demanding and detail oriented, but Rick is smart. He recognizes where the Mavs are in our life cycle. We’re the Gen Z Mavs.”

Interesting indeed. I remember he also visited both Luka in Slovenia and Porzingis in Latvia during the offseason, trying to build up a rapport with them before training camp even started. As if I needed another reason to love having Rick Carlisle as a coach!

The Mavericks are already good enough to make the playoffs
Quote:
This year’s Mavericks don’t have a perfect roster, but a slight step on the gas will create even more three-point chances for players who, unlike the past few years, can actually make open threes. They already have an unselfish 20-year-old prodigy who may lead the league in assists some day, and over the summer they taped a “four-point line” down on their practice court, the benefits of which are twofold, as several players have stated. First, any legitimate threat standing a few feet behind the three-point line must be accounted for, which widens driving, passing, and cutting lanes even more than they’d otherwise be.

Mavericks stock report: Kristaps Porzingis’ offense will be fine, but what about Delon Wright’s?
Quote:
UP: Kristaps Porzingis’ offense
In every game, Porzingis has launched wiiiide-open 3s. After taking just four 2-pointers against Milwaukee, Dallas began Monday’s game against Oklahoma City with a designed play to get Porzingis deep positioning under the rim. (He calmly hit a short turnaround jumper.) There’s no hesitation when he drives the ball, and he looks plenty athletic on plays like this one.
DOWN: Kristaps Porzingis’ defense
It took three games for Porzingis to record his first preseason block, and there have been long stretches where he hasn’t looked sharp. I’m not bothered when Giannis Antetokounmpo overpowers him for a layup, but warning lights go off in my head when the 5’11 Frank Mason III does the same thing.
UP: Jalen Brunson
Dallas has scored almost 140 points per 100 possessions in Brunson’s minutes this preseason, by far the best on the team, and he’s absolutely the reason why.
DOWN: The team’s lack of top-end talent
The Action Network’s Matt Moore was the latest person to write it: “The key issue with Dallas is not that their players are bad — it’s that every player is forced to play a role higher than what they would in an optimal situation.”
DOWN: Delon Wright
Last season, Dallas had the third-fewest transition opportunities in the league; Wright’s athletic ability to grab-and-go, turning defensive rebounds into layups on the other end within seconds, is valuable for that exact reason. But we’ve seen only glimpses thus far, like this play, where Wright immediately sheds a defender and assists Porzingis in the corner.
UP: Justin Jackson as the fifth starter
Jackson is a high-floor, low-ceiling player, but that’s what you need next to Doncic, Porzingis and Wright, three medium-to-high usage players within any starting unit. As long as he’s hitting open 3s and making simple plays, Jackson’s a key player on this team.
DOWN: Seth Curry
He is barely averaging more preseason points than Dakota Mathias. He certainly hasn’t looked any better than him.
UP: The new lighting in the American Airlines Center
It’s a softer lighting setup that focuses on the court, leaving the stands around them more shadowed than years before. It’s aesthetically gorgeous.
DOWN: The team’s offensive spacing
NBA defenders respect the following Mavericks shooters: Doncic, Porzingis, Curry and … that’s about it. What about Wright, or Dorian Finney-Smith, or Maxi Kleber, or Dwight Powell, or even Justin Jackson?
UP: Josh Reaves
He’s still working on his shooting, but I found it telling that Reaves got second-unit minutes in the first half of the preseason opener. There’s no question he’s viewed highly.
DOWN: J.J. Barea
He’s literally down two inches after the NBA mandated proper measurements, falling from 6’0 to 5’10. But Barea has also struggled in his first two games.
UP: Luka Doncic (and his free throw shooting)
Doncic has hit 19 of his 22 foul shots in his last two games, which matters.

Let's face it, the NBA game we watch and root for bears little resemblance to a basketball game that any of us "regular" people would play. The NBA is unique in this respect imo compared to the other 3 major professional sports.

Zach lowe in his wild NBA predictions article (really like to pay attention to this one each year) has a few predictions on the Mavs
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...ades-watch-for
8. Utah and Dallas get All-Stars again
Given good health, eight of the 12 spots in the West are locked down: Curry, Westbrook, Harden, Leonard, Davis, LeBron, Jokic, and Lillard. Minnesota should win enough for Karl-Anthony Towns to make it nine.
Paul George would normally make 10 -- leaving two measly spots -- but the Clippers say he's going to miss at least 10 games, leaving the door slightly ajar. Even if George makes it, I'm reserving one spot each for members of the Luka Doncic/Kristaps Porzingis and Mitchell/Gobert duos.
20. Dallas makes the playoffs, along with the Clippers, Lakers, Jazz, Nuggets, Rockets, Blazers, and Spurs. Golden State finishes 9th
Gulp.
The easiest prediction -- the most likely outcome -- is to take last season's field and replace Oklahoma City with the Lakers. This column is for the wild ideas -- the gut feelings that scare you, but don't go away.
Doncic and Porzingis complement each other on both ends. The supporting cast complements them. Rick Carlisle will get the most out of this team. Some interloper is going to surprise. It might be the Pelicans; if Zion Williamson is a star from day one, he is going to dunk on every postseason projection that excludes New Orleans. It might be the Kings. I'm taking Dallas.

Cato. I think this is based on the fact that he doesn't really fit the style they wan to play. He's simply too immobile. Ideally it's not going to become a big issue because Boban is a niche player that Carlisle will only use against bigger bangers. Of course now with DP out the first few games, he's our primary backup big.
