Why would the Mavs want odom? How does he fit?

A legit Backup for Dirk and Marion, and someone who can anchor the second unit. A good defensive player as well.

Lamar Odom is one of the most versatile players in all of basketball.
To get him for just a trade exception? I mean, this is a steal... an absolute steal.

Barea has had 1 good year, he doesn't deserve a multi year deal. Do we at our regular jobs get big raises because we had 1 good year? No! Prove you can do it 2 years in a row, and then you'll get paid. Anyone can have one good year in the right situation, anyone.
So sick of athletes expecting to get all that paper with a little proven track record of consistent production.

It is probably beside the point, but there are plenty of "regular jobs" where if you make it rain for a year you get paid.
And Barea is on a longer trajectory than just one year.

No honestly.. Jamison, walker were good players as well but they didn't fit at all. I felt the same way about Caron/Shawn to a big extent, they didn't compliment each other.

It's odom for chandler.. IMO that is not a great swap, but it is getting something instead of just letting chandler walk for nothing which I like.

No real order:
Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Marion, Haywood, Wright, Jones, Beaubois, Mahinmi, Rudy, Carter, Odom, Cardinal, Brewer and *Rautins
That's 15.

Hes both a signifigantly better player and fit then either of them were at that time. Lets be honest other than howard, gasol and nene what centers cant he guard?

If you think so fine. I don't think Lebron or any other small forward will be nervous about driving the lane with odom manning the middle. I think that is horrible, I've seen it before and it stunk.

I don't think he will be the closing center. Doesn't sound like a Rick thing to do.

I'm shocked that we think that a smallish forward at center during winning time is a good option. If Haywood/dalembert are on the floor at the end of games great, if it's odom we are screwed.

He fits inside the court not in a chair.

Odom came off the bench for the Lakers, why can't he do the same for the Mavs?

I sure hope not, but it sure seems to be what nba2k says is a winning combination.

Man who said Odom was our center?
Can we just accept the fact that we gained a valuable piece of depth and let
Carlisle deal with his new big problem... Lamar Odom.
Of all the problems we could have people, we just added depth to the deepest team in the league that won a championship!
damn.

Odom for a trade exception and a pick?! Although I don't really like the guy, this is a helluva move in itself. I can't believe someone would think otherwise. Odom's talented, extremely versatile and probably gives us the best forward rotation in the league alongside Dirk and Marion.
Two days ago, we looked at a depleted roster without Tyson, Caron and (probably) JJB. Now we've added Odom and Carter, still have talented young players like Roddy, Brewer and Rudy ready to step up, and provided ourselves with lots of flexibility to make a run in next year's free agency.
This is a great move that underlines our front office's creative and opportunistic approach.
Oh, and the best thing about it: The beloved Spurs, badly longing for a small forward, look just as tired and old as they did yesterday while we got ourselves a great small forward out of nowhere.

A great point I just read that displays the aggressive nature and brain power for the front office:
Dan Gilbert really has nothing to show for LeBron's TPE.
Cuban flipped his within a span of hours for one of the league's most versatile players.

Apparently the Lakers didn't even consult w/ cap teams or other teams with trade exceptions. I read that as one of 3 things
1 - Cuban was aggressively shopping the TPE
2 - Odom was actively pushing for Dallas, or
3 - The Lakers were pissed with the small-market/below cap teams for pushing for the Veto.

I would not be at all surprised if we tried getting back in on the CP3 action. Amazingly, I think we have more assets in a potential trade now than we had 24 more hours ago. Our flexibility isn't just an advantage on the court...I think it's an advantage in any attempts to facilitate a multi-team trade.

It's hard to say if #15 should go to center or PG at this point. We have some psuedo-centers (Wright, Dirk, Odom) and some psuedo points (Terry, Dojo, Roddy, Odom). Very few pure 1/5 (Haywood and Kidd really, even Mahinmi is a bit of stretch at 5).
I think the psuedo-points are a bit more unproven but I want Roddy to break through and also to get more bigs for the playoffs so all things being equal, I go center. However, it's close enough we should just get the best player available.
EDIT:
Dalembert would be choice but I think a realistic option might be Kwame Brown. Everybody else is probably just a body including ex-friends Dampier, Ajinca and Ryan Hollins. Geez the Mavs go through a lot of centers.

I find it odd that there are no headlines on ESPN about it, although they talk about Odom coming to Dallas in the Chris Paul article. I'll try not to read too much into that... I really want this to happen.

Look for the Clippers to match GSW's 4yr, $40m offer sheet to DeAndre Jordan. Also look for C and FA-to-be Chris Kaman to be on the move.

Clips get JET/Paul (get to start Paul/JET/Butler/Griffin/Jordan)
Hornets get Gordon/more Clips young talent (best package for Paul)
Dallas gets Kaman (utilizes surplus swing depth to get double head C again, still maintains cap space)
?
Kidd/Roddy/Dojo
Carter/Roddy/Rudy
Marion/Odom/Brewer
Dirk/Wright/Cardinal
Haywood/Kaman/Mahinmi
Sign West or Redd to round out backcourt.
