As you can see from this graph, Luka's situation is quite different. When playing with Kyrie Irving, the team efficiency is optimized when Luka makes neither too few nor too many assists.
When he creates 13 or more assists, the Mavericks record drops to a very disappointing 40 percent. And if Luka creates less than 5 assists in a game, Dallas Mavericks' record stands at an even lower and even more disappointing 33 percent.
Luka's and THE TEAM'S* sweet spot appears to be somewhere around 10 or so assists. As you can see on this graph, when Luka makes between 7 and 12 assists the Mavs' record stands pretty high at 65 percent.
* Because it is the team that always must be more important.

And here on this graph you have the data broken down in further categories to achieve a bit more of that thing that people ccommonly refer to as "insight." And, as you can see, in games in which Luka Doncic creates between 7 and 9 assists Dallas Mavericks' record stands at an even more impressive 69.2 percent.
But, mind you(!), when Luka makes around 7-9 assists that means that additional assists and playmaking must come from somewhere else. And that somewhere else is primarily Kyrie Irving.
I don't think that Mavs can count on Dante Exum consistently contributing in clutch situations and moments like he did yesterday. But it is, of course, great to have one more option in addition to Kyrie that is comfortable handling and managing the ball in high-pressure, clutch moments. As I am sure all of you are very well aware, Dante Exum played one season in Serbia which is known for both great basketball and tremendous, high-pressure environments (as you can see via the link below). That experience will surely serve Dante Exum well as was evidenced in yesterday's Mavs' win over the Heat.

"OBVIOUSLY we've gone through that a bit."
Exum gives a little insight into what went on in the locker room. I think what he said has to do with Grant Williams. I think that somebody blamed Grant Williams for things. And I think that somebody who was stirring that shit was probably THJ because Grant Williams took his starting role.
I don't know much about Grant Williams but I thought he played rather ok or well. He was an ok defender with good positional sense. And I thought offensively he was pretty good too. He didn't have any glaring weaknesses to his game.
THJ, I think, remains the glaring and weakest part of the roster. He is defensively not great. He can't handle the ball and involve others via any sort of playmaking. All he can do is spot up shooting and/or head-down driving the ball while ignoring the rest.
B U T, he's been a part of the team for a while. He is now one of the old guards. He carries certain respect and position within the locker room. And he also acts and carries himself as some sort of a "veteran" player with "experience" even though THAT DOESN'T TRANSLATE ONTO THE COURT. But that is who he is on this team. This team lacks strong, veteran players that can play relatively minor minutes but do so efficiently and productively, and that can be a good presence in the locker room.
DJJ, Gafford, Lively, PJ, Exum, even Kyrie are ALL STILL NEWCOMERS. Green is young. Dallas Mavericks are STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS. They need a couple of more pieces to truly contend. But with Luka and Kyrie things are possible.
And THJ is NOT EASY TO MOVE. I don't know what his contract situation is but I don't think there are many organizations out there vying for him. I don't know what happened with that Dinwiddie situation. I suspect that Mavs probably needed to offload THJ to be able to bring Dinwiddie on. I suspect that was probably the thinking. But they couldn't do it.
Or perhaps the organization has SOMETHING ELSE IN MIND. Some other piece they are looking at that is similar but perhaps better defensively. Perhaps they are looking at some kind of a great defender. I don't think Dinwiddie is a super defender or something like that in spite of that great block he made on Lillard to help decide their recent game.

So here is again that graph of the Mavs' record broken down by Luka's assists. As you can see in the middle of graph there is a total of 28 GAMES in which
1. Kyrie played too and
2. Luka created between 5 and 12 assists.
And that is what one can reasonably expect from him to produce assists-wise in a game while Kyrie is on the floor. Somewhere between 5 and 12 assists.
So, lets take a closer look at those 28 games and see how the success of Dallas Mavericks pans out depending on Kyrie and his playmaking production. In those 28 games in which Luka created between 5 and 12 assists, Dallas Mavericks' record stands at a pretty solid 64.3 percent.

Again, as you can see, Kyrie's playmaking appears to have A TREMENDOUS EFFECT on Dallas' success. When Kyrie creates 5 or more assists, the record goes up rather dramatically.
And what you need to know is that 5 assists is NOT A LOT. That is NOT AT ALL A BIG NUMBER. What happens in many games is that Kyrie sort of assumes some sort of A VERY PASSIVE ROLE throughout much of the game. He doesn't get involved much in HANDLING THE BALL as a point guard might do. He has many games with just 2-3 assists.
Kyrie should basically seek to take care of the ball as soon as the ball leaves Luka's hands. That should be his attitude. That is how he can get MORE ENGAGED IN THE GAME. What he often does is just play AS A SHOOTING GUARD. And then he seeks to charge-on in the fourth quarter to build up his SCORING NUMBERS and to help the team win. But he should help control the ball throughout the game, as well as in the fourth quarter.
In my opinion, the biggest flaw of this Dallas team is having the best ball handler in the league often going through whole games with 2 or 3 assists which he can get even without trying much and without being involved much throughout the game. And the team is offensively not even running picks or screens for him while he controls the ball in any sort of regular fashion. Luka can also also play a shooting guard. And Luka can take over playmaking with 8 seconds on the clock.

Did they mention that Doncic is top 10 in the league IN STEALS TOO. That would be A GREAT DEVELOPMENT for Luka. That is a major defensive indicator.

That was a good foul by Powell. No easy baskets must be a rule for any solid team. Especially if there's no foul trouble and they're playing a team that struggles with shooting.

Luka's game has become TOO PREDICTABLE. EVERYONE IN THE LEAGUE KNOWS WHAT LUKA DOES. He cannot keep reinventing the wheel game in and game out.

That's THJ. That 3+1 shot that he made. He forced that shot. That is not a good shot. But he can get streaky like that. It's like he zones out. Say's to himself: "Fuck it. I'm taking a shot right now." And he is almost always like that with the ball. He struggles to pass it and to manage it.
THJ's scoring confidence is when he zones out like that. So that then he must be GIVEN the ball when he is already in a good situation to shoot. Given. He must not manage the ball much.

Looking like another one of those games where the mavs show up just thinking they'll win without even playing hard.
Just look at the bad rebounding effort by kleber and PJ

Kyrie also plays GREAT POINT GUARD DEFENSE. He acts as a great pest. Has a great feel for that. And he has great jumping ability. He can really jump high.
That was very POOR DEFENCE BY THJ (letting that open three pointer). THJ is again negatively affecting the team efficiency in spite of that great start he had with a 3+1 play (which he forced). THJ is not good. Not at the level of this Mav's team.

Kidd, I think, took out Luka. And took him out well because he did not play well. Once back on the floor Luka seems more composed. That was good coaching.

This right here SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FOUL BY LUKA. Luka should have tried to get that ball out of the hands. No easy baskets must be a rule. And a great team and great players know how to be more aggressive without allowing an AND-1 opportunities. This was one such situation. Detroit is a POOR SHOOTING TEAM. Get them on the line.
That is part of experience. To know how to make plays like that. Even Luka lacks that. Let alone other Mavs.

Luka needs to pass the ball. Chucking up early shot clock threes is a losing endeavor no matter how good you are.

Poor defence by Green. He is too aggressive around a 3-point shot. Again, lack of experience. Come playoff time things like that can and do decide games. And that is a big problem with this team. Lack of experience and lack of experienced players. The team tries to play hard D, and then a player like Green plays TOO HARD. Makes stupid and unnecessary fouls. Gives three free throws.

THJ's minutes ARE GOING DOWN. Kidd is managing that situation with him well. Kidd cannot stop playing him. THJ is an old guard player in that locker room. That's how locker rooms work. You gotta respect everyone and their roles and positions. If you don't then you can get a huge problem.

And Luka is more efficient than Kyrie. They have to find the right balance. They can play pick and roll among each other. They are the two most skilled players on any floor and there is a size-differential between them. That creates problems for defense and opportunities for them. Luka can screen for Kyrie and Kyrie can screen for Luka.
They should run that sometimes. For fun. It doesn't matter who controls the ball.

Exum has A GREAT ATTITUDE. He knows what he is doing and he knows what he is supposed to do.
KYRIE DOESN'T. Kyrie often lives IN HIS OWN HEAD. Avoids the ball even when Luka is not on the floor. And then Kyrie HERO-BALLS. Goes one on one. Goes for flashy things. Doesn't instruct others to screen for him, doesn't get them into pick and roll situations. Has no sense of that team orchestration. Which is a great disappointment because he is A POINT GUARD and because he grew up AS A POINT GUARD.

Look at Exum. Look at how Exum knows how to play a point guard. Kyrie DOESN'T.
