Deader than Millwood's chances for guaranteeing next year's contract.

Um...what?
They're five back with eight to play.
They're "right back in it" in that they're not mathematically eliminated.

Jthig, they play 4 games against the Angels.
That gives them a very slim chance. Yes, a sweep would be necessary (or utter Angel failure in their other 3-4 games) but they do have a chance. I wouldn't call them "back in it", but they aren't quite as out of it as I thought (meaning, there is a chance that actually makes sense which would allow them still can make the playoffs rather than no chance as I thought).
Rangers win out, Angels lose 1 of their 4 non-Ranger games, and Rangers win the division with 93 wins (same as Angels but Rangers have head-to-head).
edit: Although I still hold no hope for a postseason appearance.

Good work resting your case. That's crucial.

Wasn't there a team last year, or the year before, that won their last ten or somesuch and made an improbable run to the playoffs? An NL team, I am thinking. Cubs, maybe?

When you're 5 out but you have a 4 game series with the team you're behind.. yes, you are back in it. I was not remotely implying that they were likely to win the division..but they were very close to at least holding their destiny in their own hands. When you were just down 7 a couple of days ago, that's all you can ask for.
Obviously they were on the edge. But they were definitely in it before the collapse at the end of the game today.

Fair enough. Their odds were still so long I wouldn't have put it that way but I can see where you're coming from.
Thanks for the jinx, btw.

What I was trying to point out is that not only mathematically they can make it in, but realistically they COULD have too. Winning out would be tough, but it looked like the Ranger bats were getting hot and if the pitching had been OK, then winning out is realistic. All the Angels would need to lose 1 of the 4 games they didn't play the Rangers in, and they were slumping anyway, and the Rangers make it in.
Note the past tense. It doesn't matter now. Not after that loss.
edit: Murph said what I was trying to say too.

Turn out the lights........in late Sept instead of in August...........there is reason to be optimistic for Rangers fans again.
