Yeah I’m less happy about Ariza. These past few years haven’t been kind.

Ok good. Not a fan of Ariza and it would be way too crowded on the wing.

"Here's the deal: The Mavericks gets James Johnson; Pistons get Delon Wright; OKC gets Ariza, Jackson and pick."
I'm assuming that pick is from Detroit since we have none.

Ariza was really good in Portland when he had something to play for. Looked washed in Sac.

I would have been fine with it just to have a veteran in the lockerroom, but I think the real appeal of Ariza is the expiring contract.

Ariza is going to OKC
The Mavs are going bigger on the wings because RC said the Clippers bullied them in that playoff series with the smaller lineups we had.

Johnson is a solid pickup. Another guy that can play 3-4 like Dodo. Our defense should be greatly improved.

Good lord. Just makes you wonder what they're going to get with all of those picks. No way they're going to use all of them themselves. They're definitely going to end up packaging a lot of them in trades.

This is why I wish the mavs weren't so hell bent on only having bigs who can launch 3's
Adams is going to play upfront with Zion a lot and they are going to wreck small ball lineups.

I'd be shocked if he sniffs the floor much. He's this years Courtney Lee
They need to bring back WCS because I don't trust only having KP, Powell and Boban at C.
Powell can't defend for crap and Boban apparently can't play but 40 games a year at 10 minutes based on his agreement with RC lol
I hate Kleber at the 5
Seems like WCS if given minutes would be perfect here.
Teams like Mobile bigs who can switch on the perimeter and WCS does that well yet it seems like they don't even want him.

Anyway, no Ariza. Good news. I don't think the Mavs need his veteran leadership.

I mean he’s got hype. You’re absolutely right. I’m not arguing he’s been sold with massive hype. Knicks came up with the unicorn marketing and Mavs have continued to sell him with that. It’s great showmanship to sell him like that.
Also you absolutely have to count injuries into the equation. If Klay Thompson was up for a contract right now, you’d 100% have to consider it.
KP had a knee surgery that has ended many careers— then missed a bunch of games with a bad knee. Then had a second knee surgery. It would be insane NOT to think about his health.
It’s all moot since he got a deal. I’m just saying empirically he’s overpaid. Not bad. Just overpaid for what he’s actually done on the court. I’m praying he stays healthy. I’m praying he starts putting up more than 20-10. I’m praying he learns how to actually create synergies with other players. Im praying he actually lives up to this unstoppable unicorn he’s been sold as. I want him to succeed and I want him to be more than just a pretty good player with freakish height.
|
You’re quoting anecdotal evidence of him not making other players better or not having the gravity of a max player to justify the take that he’s not a max guy.
He’s a mobile 7 footer who averaged 20 & 10 while anchoring our interior defense in his first season with a new team and coming back from a major injury. Our offense and defense is better with him on the court by every metric. Furthermore, we can fairly expect that he’ll continue to get better given his age and as he gains experience paying under Carlisle and alongside Doncic.

Oh I think he’ll play. He’s a switchable defender that can shoot a little and he’s a vet. Also, with the compressed schedule depth will be more important than ever.

I'm just not sure that it's true. Powell was never much of a shooter. I do wish Boban and WCS would have gotten more minutes, but I never got the impression that Carlisle was avoiding them specifically because they couldn't shoot, or that the Mavs FO was averse to pursuing bigs who couldn't shoot.

James Johnson is so much better than Courtney Lee I think all those wings get rotated based on matchups and how they play.
As for the need for a cheap big... Mavs are getting a lot of guys who are on the last year of their deal- and plan powder at it's finest... again. I can't criticize them since they have actually gotten players who can help and dumped players we didn't need. I can see them giving WCS or someone like Dedmon who will be waived by Detroit and they pursued in the past a 1yr offer for whatever remains of the MLE.

Like the James Johnson move... moving Wright is addition by subtraction as another poster said. Getting an extra roster spot is also a win.
James Johnson is big, versatile, strong, and tough veteran. Exactly what this team needed. I’m really happy with the Mavs moves this off-season.

Well it was rumored the Mavs wanted Covington, and Johnson's stats on Minny were every bit as good as Covington on the Rockets. The fact that we game up 0 picks is a nice win.

Ok, that Mavs have KILLED this offseason, and they're still going. Anyone who wines about free agency after tonight is not paying attention.
I didn't realize until just now Johnson is on a $16m expiring contract. Between THJ opting in, the young guys we drafted, Richardson, and now Johnson, the Mavs have not only gotten significantly better on the court, but they've added a number of very tradeable assets as well.
I'm totally pumped for this season.

Put the internet down for an hour thinking tonight was done...
Relieved to see Delon and Justin Jackson are gone. After seeing what another poster linked about Delon, im glad hes out. JJ had his opportunities but wasnt able to adapt in the offense.

Well said. Sneaky good deal, gave up essentially nothing for a guy that can come in and guard people and be physical for 20 minutes or so per night.

I disagree that Wright sucks.
I'd say he didn't fit which is two seperate things.
As for Johnson he played 32 games last year. Basically he was a DNP for roughly 40 games.
That's close to basically being in that C.Lee category. I don't think he sucks I just don't think RC is going to play him because he's in a different situation than Wright.
Wright was considered a prime off season acquisition for the Mavs they wanted to try and make it work.
Johnson is someone who I think they have plans to move again later in the season for salary matching purposes.
I highly doubt dude see's anywhere near the minutes Wright got.

Getting off Wrights 9m next summer is great
Dude is solid but just wasnt a fit. Johnson is perfect, expiring contract but also had a nice finish in Minny:
