The gift that keeps on giving...
@ramonashelburne: The Knicks and owner Jim Dolan were not prepared to offer Kevin Durant a full max contract due to concerns over his recovery from the Achilles injury, league sources tell me and @wojespn. Knicks officials are in Los Angeles tonight, meeting with free agents such as Julius Randle.

Knicks contending for most inept FO in the league with Charlotte. Lucky for them I don't think they can beat MJ at that.... unless they turn around and Max Randle after not maxing KD.

@wojespn: Free agent F Mario Hezonjia has agreed to a one-year minimum deal -- with a player option --- with the Portland Trail Blazers, CAA agent Michael Tellem tells ESPN.
@wojespn: To make clearer the terms: It's a two-year deal, with the second year a player option.

WCS is now unresctriced with that Joseph signing, but I'm not sure Mavs like anyone outside of Danny Green.

WCS shows up very nicely in advanced stats. IMO Mavs should let Kleber walk and go get WCS.

@ShamsCharania: In a rare gesture rewarding Lou Williams' play and leadership, the Los Angeles Clippers and Sixth Man of the Year have agreed to completely guarantee his $8M salary for 2020-21 a full season ahead, agent Wallace Prather told @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

Who wouldn't want to guarantee their best player 8 million lol? I like how that's being called a "good gesture" lol.

I assume he just wanted to stay in LA. But Mavs might have known about SAC offer and didn't want to top it. Not sure I would have paid that amount tbh. Hurts, but sometimes it's outside your control.

I think some of the "media" implying we'd get him is what really pissed people off...not that he was some great catch. A good fit with Doncic, no question, but is he really much better than Brunson if at all overall?
And Curry really is as good of a fit offensively as he was defensively for much cheaper.

Good GOD the Knicks are terrible. If you ever are embarrassed about anything the Mavs do, just remember that the Knicks exist, and you'll feel a lot better.

Everyone is assuming KD comes back to be the best player the the NBA. It will be interesting to see how he looks when he returns from his injury. I still think he will be a really good scorer, but won’t be a top 3 player in the league.

It's still a good wager.
For teams like the Mavs, Brooklyn, and now the Knicks-- teams that aren't free agent meccas, then there are very few ways to get a superstar.
1) Draft - the odds are surprisingly low for lottery picks. While the first overall pick has over a 50% chance of netting a star (based on historical stats), very few superstars come out of the draft. Only about 1 of 10 top 5 picks become superstars so you can draft in the top five for a decade without ever getting a transcendant talent.
2) Trades - Lakers are a destination for FAs, but they still spent basically a decade of draft picks to get AD. That's a lot. Getting a superstar via trade is fairly rare and always expensive.
3) Something like this. Sure you may spend 164 million on a guy who may never return to the same form, but if he drops to merely being a star, you're still doing okay. If he comes back as a top 3-5 player in the league, then you absolutely pulled off a major coup and something that basically statistically never happens.
