Any idea as to how much cap room we are gonna be working with at the summer, assuming Dirk opts out?

I'm trying to figure out why we had to include Bogut in that deal. Harris and Anderson would have worked better salary wise then we could have moved Bogut for something else.

I'm pretty sure it was because like Dwill, nobody was giving us anything for Bogut. So we instead turned Bogut into a 6.6m trade exception which is better than nothing.

It all depends on what we do with Dirk really. I'll wait for Sefant to make a thread about cap space but just eye balling it at spotrac, which has noel's cap hold wrong. I think we have around 20-24m if we renounce Dirk. That includes Harris and Powell though. Who we could move if we wanted to sign someone significant.

I think the cap is $102 million for next year. Is this right?

We got an exception? That's awesome! I know how that helped out the Lakers in the Odom trade.

According to HoopsHype:
Harrison Barnes $23,112,004
Wesley Matthews $17,884,175
Dwight Powell $ 9,003,125
Jose Juan Barea $ 3,903,900
Seth Curry $ 3,028,410
Total $56,931,614
Dallas Mavericks have team options on the following:
Dirk Nowitzki $25,000,000
Devin Harris $ 4,402,546
Yogi Ferrell $ 1,312,000
AJ Hammons $ 905,249
Dorian Finney-Smith $ 905,249
Nicolas Brussino $ 905,249
Total $33,430,253
Assuming a $102 million salary cap ($122 million luxury cap), and the Mavericks sign everyone to the team options, they have $12,638,133 left and 4 roster spots to fill. I figure that Nerlens Noel will demand a significant raise, potentially eating up all of that cap space and some of the luxury cap space. Is it possible for the Mavericks to sign anyone beyond a player willing to accept the MLE?

We can use Noel 11M cap hold and then go over the cap to sign him. Gives much added flexibility. This was truly a great trade by Donnie. Having his rights as RFA is huge.

Wow, I just heard about this trade about an hour ago, and after reading the details am loving it! It would've been nice to get something, if just a second, for Williams, but the Mavs used all of their good luck on this trade IMO. It's nice to see Bogut and Williams gone and a young, solid talent added to the roster. It'll be fun watching these younger guys the remainder of the year. I just hope Rick plays them! LOL. Mejri may really open some eyes second half of season. After all, he's a relative vet on the team now, so he may be surprised and play a lot more minutes than expected. :-O

New details emerge on draft compensation, trade exceptions in Mavericks-Sixers trade
Quote:
In addition to getting a player they feel can help them for years to come in Nerlens Noel, the Mavericks also got two trade exceptions in the deal with Philadelphia.
The exception for Andrew Bogut will be worth slightly more than $6.6 million. For Justin Anderson, it's $1.5 million.
Trade exceptions can be used to absorb player salaries that are acquired if the Mavericks don't have sufficient cap space or a player whose salary makes a deal work.
Trade exceptions typically expire after a calendar year.
Also, if the Mavericks do not have to surrender their top-18 protected draft pick this summer, Philadelphia will get their second round picks in 2017 and 2020, not 2018 as first reported.

That big trade exception really could come in handy once we re-sign Nerlens and Dirk.

Wow 2017 and 2020 2nd round picks...dunno how the Mavs pulled that one off. Maybe Noel really does have character issues because I still can't believe they went for that.

Yeah, $8m in trade exceptions and non-consecutive 2nd rounders make this trade all the more impressive.
Also, how does one NOT have "character issues" playing for Philly? Dude gets drafted, then watches his team use top-3 picks to draft big men three years in a row after preaching their ridiculous "process" -- that's a tough pill to swallow.

Could also be the injury issues since he does have knee problems. Forgot that he missed his first year because of injuries.

Yea, No doubt. That is a tough situation for sure. The floor is open for him to prove himself with plenty of mpg to do it with.
I'm excited at the prospect of having nice shot blocking ability and causing hesitation to slashers between the 2 centers now.

Some great info (with video!) in this thread detailing sets the Mavs can use Nerlens in. Offensively, he might turn out being used as a superpowered version of Powell.

I think this is a classic 'needs a new place to thrive' story...and the Mavs are a great place for that to happen. Not only does he fit a clear need for the Mavs, but Rick is great at putting players in a position to succeed. IF he stays healthy, I think this is a tremendous pickup for the Mavs. Heck, even if he did have actual 'character' issues, it is still a great place for a new start, and whatever issues he might have had likely won't surface or play a big role here. I think regardless of what happened in Philly Nerlen is going to be very excited for a chance to play and play a key role on a franchise that really wants him to succeed.

My own little conspiracy theory... When we struck out this last summer we paid Dirk 25m not necessarily just as a way to make it up to him for being underpaid but because it would work like a front loaded contract. We pay him big upfront and then he takes less next summer if we actually sign someone.

It is a team option according HoopsHype. Now, is that better or worse for a team than a player option? Is there a capb hold until the team makes their decision? If they don't pick up the team option but still want the player what kind of process follows?

I'm pretty sure his cap hold is 150% of his previous salary. So if he is at 25m his cap hold is well over 30m. That's why he will either get a deal done first using cap space or he would be renounced and then signed using whatever exception we qualify for.

Biggest issue I have is that I have two desires that conflict:
1) I want to see Nerlens Noel start and play 35+mpg
2) I want to see Dirk play as long as he wants (1-2 more seasons), but at his age, he gets destroyed if he plays PF

I want to see Yogi play 35 mpg too. I want to make sure he is battle-tested before the draft.
And I'm really curious about our closing lineup....who will be the odd man out?
Curry? Yogi? Noel?
I can't see RC keeping Dirk and Wes out and Barnes will definitely close games.

There really won't be an odd man out, unless you are considering that everyone is playing at a really high level at the same time. Unlikely. Rick isn't afraid of keeping in whoever is hot regardless of who starts.

Up 10 in crunch time, he'll probably go with Noel-Barnes-Wes-Curry and Yogi. Down 10 in crunch time, he'll go Dirk-Barnes-Wes-Curry-Yogi....gunners galore.
Or he'll just go with the 2 hottest hands between Wes-Curry-Yogi when down 10 in, if he needs both Dirk and Noel to clean the boards.

@espn_macmahon: Nerlens Noel on Dallas: "I feel like this is a home to me." Says he needed a fresh start after a frustrating few years in Philadelphia.
@bobbykaralla: Noel took over the locker next to Dirk's where Justin Anderson's had been.

Overpaid?! We gave up 2 2nd round picks. What are the odds of drafting someone good with those picks? The odds of the Mavericks drafting someone good even?! We gave up Andrew Bogut. He has not been a good fit for the team. Who else did we give up? Justin Anderson. What did he do in his first game with the 76ers. Not a whole lot. I expect for him to grow as a player, similarly to Jae Crowder. We'll be fine though.
