I don't know about all that. I mean its not like they can prevent cap room teams from talking to other guys in case plan A doesn't work out. It's likely mavs have talked to almost everyone and have some sort of "deal" with these players to maybe work something out once the log jam clears up otherwise those free agents could lose out on money themselves.

Right but they probably want teams to hold out hope of getting a Bron, Bosh, or Wade. And since they haven't figured out who is making what, they don't want other teams with space to snag up all the 2nd tier guys before they do figure it out.

I like the theory, but everybody expects dominos won't start to fall until Melo and LeBron have been signed somewhere.
It makes no sense for let's say a Pau Gasol to jump the gun and sign in Miami for 8M now when he can wait whether or not he might be getting more somewhere else from teams that didn't land Melo/Bron. Except he's content with the combination of salary and situation in Miami. And then the smoke screen doesn't matter anyway.

@ESPNSteinLine: We've gotten to the point in free agency where some teams in pursuit think LeBron is more likely to leave than Melo. Stunning turn of events
No harm in Mavs' holding pattern

Well Lebron fits our team a lot better than Melo. I realize that he fits every team, but he especially fits ours.
We aren't getting either, but if Bosh really is leaving, then I say we have a 5% shot.

If Houston is smart they give up on Melo right now and throw to Bosh a 4y max deal. They still are able to keep Parsons, have a nice S5 and are breaking up the East title contender...

I don't think Mavs have any shot, but at least it's getting really interesting now.
Bron might have outsmarted himself. Also while he technically didn't talk Bosh/Wade into opting out, they both surely would have stayed put if LeBron did. So especially Wade might be a bit pissed because he ain't worth what he would have earned next year.
That said, I still think a return to Miami is most likely. Who knows, in the end LeBron might even feel obligated because he created quite a mess.

Convincing FAs to come to Dallas looks a lot easier when you already have most of your pieces in place... Just sayin'.

With ~15m cap next summer. I think its definatly tempting on the paper (in combination with RC)

If we could pull off that lineup it would be an enormous shift for our franchise. With our financial flexibility next year, someone like Lebron coming here could put us in the WCF or better for like the next decade. Sure, Dirk will eventually retire, but that lineup would attract roll players like Ray Allen did for Miami for the foreseeable future.

Melo is a better player but bosh is a better fit for them anyway. In fact that harden/parsons/bosh/Howard 2-5 is absolutely horrifying.

I would have agreed with you, and you were right, they did offer that deal to the clearly better fit (for Howard and Harden).

If Lebron crushes Cleveland fans' heart once again, i will honestly feel for them. Then again, they've won the lottery three out of the last four times.

I haven't heard anything from Lebron though to insinuate that he'll go back to Cleveland. Everything is media or agent driven.

Man, sometimes I feel irritated with this whole "decision" business. It's like everytime some of these players are Free Agents they want people begging them to come to their team. Do these guys really need all the attention? How about taking a few days, weighing your options, speaking to team representatives and then making your decision? Why is everything always this long, drawn-out process?

Most of them never get to Step 2.

@daldridgetnt: Per source, LeBron James has all the information he needs from teams & will take no more meetings. Will spend next day+ talking w/family.

@Caplan_NBA: So LeBron meets with Riley, but will not meet, apparently, with Comic Sans Cavs owner Dan Gilbert or the club's new GM and coach.

Decision to come Friday or Saturday, too apparently.
Funny, but LeBron is the most important piece to this offseason right now for us. If he goes to Cleveland, Bosh goes to Houston, Parsons comes to us. If he stays in Miami, Bosh stays, Houston matches, Mavs scramble to sign a SF. We cause Houston to overpay for Parsons, but gain nothing for ourselves.

Just speculating but assuming Lebron stays in Miami.. wouldn't it be safe to say that the Mavs would still be in talks with Stephenson, Deng and Ariza? At that point we could assume the money will be available and we could start preliminary talks on contract correct?

One can only hope and we can absolutely 100% be talking to those guys regardless. They are FAs free to talk to anyone, in fact I bet their agents are trying to setup all manners of meeting with even teams over the cap right now

@sam_amick: LeBron James won't be making an announcement in three minutes, or the next hour, for that matter, I'm told.

@AlexKennedyNBA: LeBron isn't home. He's going from Vegas to Brazil. Why are fans parking on his lawn and walking up to his house? What's wrong with people?

The media is what fuels this. I know plenty of people are going to be lemmings no matter what, but false reports and rumors have gotten out of control.
