Sorry, I thought you were giving me a hard time for being out of the loop. Like when someone posts a thread about a trade and we already have five threads about it.

The site was messed up - everyone had an excuse for being out of the loop...

As a contributing member, I have to say I'm f*cking sick of seeing "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." at the end of close games...
Could a mod maybe get in DJ's ear and find out what's up with the bandwidth??

Thanks for bringing that up, Underdog. We'll have the same kind of traffic and then some in the playoffs, so things are likely to get worse come April with even more frequent down times.
It would indeed be nice if we could get an idea on what's needed to improve the situation. If I my ask, how much does it cost to run this site? What would it cost to run the site on a better server? Making a donation won't be of help as it relates to improving the situation if it only preserves the current status and doesn't lead to a server upgrade or increased resources.

Would it behoove the community to find a backup forum when the site goes down?

I'd rather chat with you guys on a different site than not chat with you guys at all.
Especially during the playoffs. There is only a 100% chance the site will crash during the playoffs.

Gah, server too busy again.
This site can't even handle 100 visitors at once...

I haven't contributed in quite a while, and I'm not really in a position to right now, but I really do wish this bandwidth problem would get taken care of. Mavs @ Trai Blazers brings the site to its knees, and it's only going to get worse from here on out. I am not even talking about the playoffs, I'm talking about the Golden State Warriors, FFS.
I'm not trying to get in anyone's ear, obviously mods don't have the power to do anything about it. But I can certainly express my annoyed-ness.

Yeah, I don't know what changed, but we had 1,780 guests on here at once a few years back - not being able to handle 100 or so just doesn't add up...

Any particular reason?
I don't see any reason to contribute financially ever again if that's the case - no motivation on my end.

Ugh, this site is becoming unbearable after games...
Is DJ willing to sell the site? As an admin, he's become more useless than a white crayon...

Yeah, the forum could collectively buy it and add the hosting necessary. We'd be the Green Bay Packers of the Dallas Mavs sites.
The community rocks but it feels like 15 people riding on one bike at times so I hope people don't mind me bringing this up but there's definitely a ton of Mavs forums out there. Some are already bubbling but pretty thin on content (1 line posts and crazy signatures). Others are pretty vacant and we could fill it up. As a community, we should find some backup places so we can chop it up in the fourth quarters if necessary.
May also make sense to collect the email addys of the regulars so they know where to go when things die.
Speaking for myself, my attachment is to the people on the site, not the site itself, though it is a cool site when it functions.

That's a good idea.
I'm not too familiar with the backend of the site but would it help if we took off our signatures and things like that to lighten the page?

Well, why not go ahead and dtrip it and see? It aint like those threads are important anyway.
And go ahead and get rid of any animated gifs, or gifs in general .
I just don't see how it could "only" be a bandwith issue on GDTs when it crashed when there is probably only about 50 people on the board at that time.... this site routinely says there are more than that on the site at one time.....

Maybe those of you who are exceptionally motivated on the site performance topic should try to send a PM to atheos.. he is an admin who posted a couple of times regarding a DB migration for performance enhancements a few months ago. I'm not familiar enough with DJ's arrangement to know whether or not atheos is a friend/associate or someone who works for the hosting company. Either way, maybe atheos knows a way of getting a message out to DJ.
I'm sure over ten years, DJ has put a lot of money into this and maybe just doesn't have the time to invest in the problem solving effort on top of additional money (or even on top of add'l money received from users).
In addition to the user community (obvious), the d-m.com presence and name recognition is worth preserving. Performance issues can be solved, just need the right people on it.
I'd consider being a Simpson or a Davis in this mix, if someone out there wants to drive the bus. I don't mind kicking in some cash... but only if I trusted whoever was in control to be dedicated to it and stick with it awhile (and to consider my opinion commensurate with my level of contribution, of course). So if someone wants to get a group together and try to pitch DJ on becoming "Administrator Emeritus," I'll be glad to help.
In my day job, I manage a team responsible for web-based application delivery on a scale far greater than a busy night at d-m.com, so I can also provide some guidance in terms of where to go to help the situation technically.. I just don't have the time to be the guy to execute it on the technical end. I know we have lots of smart folks here.. with the right help I think the perf issues could be made to go away fairly simply.
Also.. to address the question of bandwidth - if it's literally a bandwidth issue in terms of network throughput (and not bandwidth as a euphemism for server capacity).. then money will solve that very easily. Either switch to a different hosting provider w/ better bang for the buck, or pay to lift the throttling imposed by the current one. Assuming that is the issue at hand.

I'm more than willing to donate to the site, but only if I know it's going towards fixing the bandwidth issues. Just throwing that in the mix.

Has the site been down recently? I haven't experienced any problems in a while. I spoke to DJ via PM and he has been in contact with the hosting company and admins.

Went down during OT tonight. Been going down for a few minutes at the end of games, generally... and playoffs will be much worse.
Glad you were able to get ahold of him. See if he's willing to sell or at least upgrade servers, and if so, see how much we'd need to raise. There are lots of people willing to throw some money at the site.

Yep, that's an important point. One would think it shouldn't be too difficult to keep a place like this one funded thanks to the many active and committed members, even if a better and (marginally) more expensive server is required.
It would be nice, though, to see some sort of commitment and dedication to the site from those in charge. The goal would have to be to improve the status quo and get an idea on how to achieve that goal.
