This game reminds me of the Phoenix game. We, for whatever reason, didn't play at the right intensity in the first quarter. That doesn't work against really good teams.

RJ was fouled too. I NEVER blame the refs. We deserved to lose today, but they didn't give us a chance for a comeback.

Not a fan of your comparison there but I do agree with the second part of your post, this team definitely lacks shooting (and defense, obviously).

Did shooters work out in Dallas?
Carroll? No.
Morrow? No.
Ellington? No.

Other than Peja? Who else is a better shooter in recent years? Stevenson? Cardinal?

Rick don't prefer pure shooters, he needs a SG or SF with defensive mindset, it is better with a shooting ability, I don't see why Crowder is crossed out in here, Aminu is improving his threes too.

Well I think we do not lack players that can actually make 3's but players that make them consistently. None of the Mavs players shoots over 40% (except Villanueva lol but he hasn't played that much so far). A team like Memphis has 6 players over 40% (3P%) for example.

Now if you attempt a lot of 3's as we do you just need to have some elite shooters from outside. Dirk's 3P% is not good this year and Nelson is an obvious downgrade to Calderon from last season. I don't remember Terry's exact numbers from when he was here but I miss his 3 point shooting. He was unstoppable sometimes.

IMO Scoring isn't our problem, perimeter defense is. We can't expect Chandler to clean everything up.

Why doesnt devin harris solve this for us, or at least make it tolerable? Are you going to give up monta for rondo? If not you havent solved much.

By the numbers (and from what I've seen) Devin has lost a step. His defensive plus/minus indicates he's the 62nd best defensive PG in the league. (Source: http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rp...RPM/position/1 ). By comparison, Rondo is 3rd in the entire NBA.

Our biggest problem is perimeter D. Unless we do something about it we're not going to make it very far in the West. Assume the 8 playoff teams in the West are:

GS - Steph Curry
Memphis - Mike Conley
Houston - Patrick Beverly
Portland - Dame Lillard
OKC - Russell Westbrook
Dallas - Jameer Nelson
San Antonio - Tony Parker
LA Clips - Chris Paul

I take any of the other 7 starting points over Jameer. It's not a good position to be in. Everything in basketball starts with the point guard and dribble penetration.

All I'm saying is we definitely need to strongly pursue any avenues to upgrading our D at the 1 & 2 if we want any shot of coming out of the West. Otherwise we're going to get eliminated by one of those other seven teams behind 30-35 ppg from their PG.

Funnily enough, Curry didn't even shoot that well this game. It was Klay Thompson that really killed us. Ellis has no chance against a big guard like him who can shoot it.

At some point, the team is just going to have to consider Ellis at the one. I just don't know how else to fix the guard defensive problem unless you do try that or make a trade.

We managed to get by with jet as the closing two because jkiddo was an exceptional point and defender. He didnt drive at all so having that is not necessarily a must have imo.

But we did have a younger dirk, a much, much better defender in marion than parsons.....and we started the game in a defensive mindset by having stevenson start instead of jet. I dont see monta coming off the bench for sure. I also do not see monta playing the one... So we had younger tyson, shawn, dirk, jkiddo, stevenson. My goodness this roster isnt in the same hemisphere as that bunch.

So unfortunately i think our team is very unbalanced defensively and it will be pretty difficult to fix roster wise at the moment.

That being said i've never believed that atheletes of this caliber cannot play decent defense. Ive always thought it boiled down to tenacity and want to. ( to be average). This team right now isnt sniffing average except for very short stretches against lesser quality teams.

It is a problem which is going to be very, very difficult to solve.

Not sure if a trade would be possible, but maybe Ellis as PG and getting Stephenson as SG would improve both rebounding and defense. Questions remain wether he would fit into the team chemistry and who to give up in such a trade. But something definitely has to be done.

It's foolish to compare this team to that one because we have no one remotely approaching that version of dirk. He's still very good and his game has aged gracefully but he's a star, not a superstar now. That's a HUGE difference and one that changes what we can get away with.
