Is the Lakers' defense much better than I've given it credit for, or is the Celtics' offense just friggin terrible?

Garnett might be an idiot, but one can be glad to have a guy with his attitude on the roster.

They're missing layups. But at least they're attempting them.

I don't know if we should really be getting our panties in a bunch over Glen Davis. He doesn't exactly bring a lot to the table, and he plays the same position as our best player.
With that being said, he was probably the player of the game tonight. He was huge for the Celtics, and he was pretty darn good in the fourth quarter in the last game too.

Finally a great game with actual basketball competition. The athmosphere in the 2nd half was really intense, nice job by the Celtics bench. If they continue to let them play instead of calling every little ticky tack BS I think the Celtics win. They can bring a higher level of energy. I don´t really like him but I thought KG was great today rallying the team, knocking on the floor and all, it seemed to work. I´m so rooting for Boston.
Boston = basketball
Lakers = showtime

Game 5 is likely going to be the best/most complete and competitive game of the series. Neither team really wants to lose that game, sure LA has two waiting in the wings back home but if you give Boston momentum, they can run with it. Boston can't afford to lose the game and be asked to win two in a row in LA.
These teams are neck and neck and they haven't done enough to show they can beat the other two times in a row, it's gonna be interesting.

I have to say that the series is a lot more evenly matched than I anticipated. In the beginning, I picked the Lakers in 5. After Game 1, I didn't think it would even be worth watching.

I think Bynum being injured has a lot to do with that but give the Celtics a lot of credit, they smell blood and latch on.

I thought it'd be evenly contested...I predicted Celtics in 7 and it looks like it has a great chance of going the distance. It's just a simple case of each team has something that the other team simply can not stop. No matter how hard they try, the Lakers can't really stop Rondo and the Celtics can't handle the size for the Lakers. Things like fouls and occasional x-factors push the advantage to one side or another. I still think Boston has the potential to win the series. With the performances of KG, Pierce, and Allen they have to know their window is pretty much closed after this year. If you give stars the knowledge that it's their last chance, they're gonna go down swinging.

I think he brings a ton to the table, given his role. All the Finals announcers seem to agree. Not really sure what makes you say otherwise.
Fazekas plays the same position as our best player too, so that argument is really no good. And in fact, his game is far more similar to Dirk's than Davis's is. Our FO took by far the worse of the two PF's available. Davis could have been a very nice piece for us to have coming off our bench to give us some hustle plays and tough points around the hoop.

He's got some Bass-itis in the sense that he's got the frame to be able to play down there in the post but once it comes to the point of impact right at the basket he can get his shot rejected. The difference with Davis seems to be that he's got a stronger motor in the paint and uses his body as a weapon in a sense.

He's not really much of a defender, he's an average rebounder at best, and he's an inefficient scorer. He's an okay bench player, but that's about it. Like I said, he was probably the player of the game last night, but most nights he's a pretty mediocre player. There's a reason why his career PER is 11.1.
The Brandon Bass comparison that BG whipped out is an interesting one. Bass isn't a great rebounder or defender either, but he at least gives you decent scoring. I'd take Bass over Davis as our PF any day of the week, and we pretty much let Bass walk.

Baby's better than his season averages. He got out of shape after his dumb broken thumb incident and it took him the rest of the year to get his conditioning back.
He's great at drawing charges. He's great on wide bodies like Shaq and Howard because they can't move him.
He's got exceptionally nimble feet.
He's developed a very good mid range jumper (when in relatively good shape).
He doesn't care about pressure and loves big games.
On the negative side: he's limited because of height and arm length. He gets his shot blocked more than any player in the league. He can't jump very high and doesn't block shots himself.

It took him a whole year to get his conditioning back after a thumb injury? I don't really buy that, but even if it is true that he was out of shape all season because of his thumb injury, that's not saying much positive about the guy.

Drawing charges is great, but that's not all there is to defense. He's never going to be a great defensive player due to his lack of size.

I'll agree that he's pretty quick for a guy his size.

According to hoopdata.com, he's shooting 36% from 10-15 feet and 33% from 16-23 feet. So I don't really buy this.

He does seem to play well in the playoffs. Again he played well last game, and I remember him having a pretty nice fourth quarter the game before.

Just a follow up to your comments: Baby got in the best shape of his life shape last summer. He broke his thumb in a fight with a friend, then six weeks later he came back in terrible shape. Yes I agree, that is very much not a positive thing to say about the guy.
On the midrange jumpers- you can throw out the yearly stats. He really is a good shooter *when he's in condition*. In shape, he shoots really well from that distance. I've seen every minute of Big Baby's career.
On the defense- He does some things really well (as stated above) and others poorly. He does grasp and play the Celtics demanding team defense quite well. He can be a liability due to height, short arms, and lack of jumping ability. For example, you wouldn't want to put him on Dirk.
He's an unusual person. He seems very bright yet says and does some dumb things. His positive skillset and his physical liabilities are unique. Because of that he can be a great help in some circumstances, but gives away a lot under the wrong conditions.

Great analysis. Can you do one on Nick Fazekas?

Kobe's got to be pissed by the performance of his teammates. Artest just gave away an easy layup attempt in order to get fouled and missed both free throws with 40 seconds to go in the 4th quarter. So telling.
Rondo once again had some outstanding plays in the second half. He's really turned into a great player and difference-maker.

I´d like to know what´s going on in Artests head. Or wait... maybe I don´t.
I almost have to laugh when he dribbels around on offense and somehow seems to get really lost. Happened quite a few times against the Celtics.
And yes KG again had a nice game. He´s getting healthier and it shows.

Yep, KG had a very good game, Pierce even better, Rondo's already been mentioned due to his crucial plays at the end. The Celtics are talented and know how and when to pick a fight. Their regular season was apparently just foreplay. They look like the eptiome of a veteran team in retrospect.
That said, this series is far from over. Kobe's been phenomenal and someone like Gasol might be able to play better at home, just like the rest of the Lakers.

The weird thing was I thought Ray Allen played good defense. Kobe just got on a great run and hit everything. Ray was forcing him into mostly tough shots, but Bryant kept making them. That was a very entertaining 3rd quarter.

Suns' GM Kerr will not return
link
PHOENIX -- Steve Kerr says he won't return as general manager of the Phoenix Suns despite building a team that made a surprising run to the Western Conference finals.
Kerr says he is exploring opportunities to return to television work.
Kerr told The Associated Press that the decision was solely his and not the result of any disagreements with owner Robert Sarver.
A source, however, told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the move has to do with Kerr feeling unable to adequately do the job with the financial limitations imposed by Sarver. The Suns have both Amare Stoudemire and Channing Frye as potential free agents this summer.
Kerr's contract will expire at the end of June. He had said he expected to work out a new deal with Sarver.
Sarver told The Arizona Republic that differences in contract negotiations played only a "small part," if any at all, adding that an opportunity to return to television as an NBA commentator prompted Kerr to leave the organization after three years as its GM.
"I wouldn't say it's a big surprise," Sarver told the newspaper. "Television is what he did before he came on board. It's a change of plans from during the season. It boiled down to a number of things, including lifestyle and the opportunity. I was hoping to have him back."
Kerr was a TNT color commentator for NBA telecasts for four years before Sarver hired him three years ago. He said in an interview with the AP a month ago that he sometimes longed for the simpler days behind the microphone.
Sarver told The Arizona Republic the Suns will conduct a search for Kerr's replacement and consider in-house candidates. Kerr will stay on board for the June 24 draft and keep his ownership stake in the team.
"It's definitely been an interesting three years for both of us and the organization," Sarver told the newspaper. "Overall, I think he did a very good job to put us on solid ground with players and coaches, getting a defensive emphasis and got the ground laid on teamwork and chemistry. We're in a pretty good spot moving forward, and a lot of it has to do with moves he's made. There were some good moves and bad moves, which goes with the job. But overall, I think he's done a very good job."
His departure from the Suns first was reported by KTAR in Phoenix, the team's flagship radio station.

Not surprised by Kerr jumping ship. Heard him with Tom Tolbert recently on a radio show here in SF area. He was just tired, but glad things worked out post Shaq and the team got to the west finals. Not sure of Amare's stance. But team wants him back.

Hahaha, Sarver is such a cheapskate. What owner asks their GM to take a 10% pay cut after a surprise run to the Western Conference Finals?

I think he's getting out at a good time. Despite everything he did to ruin that franchise's best chance at a championship, he ended this season on a good note. I'm guessing he got the feeling Amare was leaning towards leaving and Sarver was unwilling to spend which means an increased work load with a paycut to boot. Get out on a high note and go back to the easy life of commentating.
Amare and his agent will probably feed this to the public as a reason for their desire to look at other options. Makes the PR hit of leaving a little less significant.
