Yeah, this dude could have multiple roles.
I'm not sure I'd consider him a "goon", but Carlisle definitely has someone to go to when the game starts to get ugly and Mavs start getting bullied. I honestly think that was part of opposing teams' game plan at times (especially Clips in POs).
Now Rick has the " Equalizer" in JJ to hopefully eliminate that opposing strategy.

This guy is absolutely perfect for what we need and I don't understand why some folks feel he's "this year's Courtney Lee". The guy has great size, can handle, create, defend 1-5, shoot from deep and also play the role of enforcer. I'm honestly not sure what more mavs fans could want from a player. He checks every box. I know others would still like us to pull in a Millsap, Ibaka or Bogdanovic but I'm almost inclined to say lets just re-sign WCS and get on with the season.

Bobby Portis signing with Milwaukee. That's a guy I would have liked here.

Here is where I disagree.
A guy like Milsap or Ibaka keeps us as contenders if we lose KP or Powell for any length of time so it makes sense to save the 6mil for a guy like that if one of them become available. Either of those two would be great trade pieces as well during the season.
We were able to sign WCS for next to nothing in the middle of the season and there will be plenty that can give us close to what he can (if not more) available this season as well, so I completely understand the Mavs waiting on this one.
I don't see the Mavs using the MLE on WCS unless/until all other options are off the table.

I hope I'm wrong but my gut feeling is in Dallas you won't even see him get a chance to handle the ball that way and two I bet he becomes just a stationary guy on the perimeter.
We can all clearly see he's capable of making plays but I'd bet money in Dallas that he won't have the freedom to play that style.
|
Im afraid you are correct. I hope he gets a little leeway on the second team though because he's capable.

what would it take to get Ibaka and what resources do we have to bring him in?
i absolutely agree that we need at least one more quality big - for the inevitable injuries and also with the weird season schedule there will be some "load management" for sure.

Yeah, Dizzy Gillespie is still in the mix, but it might end up being just a camp invite, when said and done, especially if Bey does end up being a two-way.
They can bump Bey up to an actual roster spot after they wheel and deal, depending on how things go.

To be fair we did bet wrecked by guards
But also to be fair, we already have three small guards in Burke, Barea, and Brunson
We also got a guy in Richardson who is a bit of a specialist at guarding both guard spots
If you get wrecked by guards, it really means you need to work on your inside/help defense and that's my bigger question mark now.

Not sure if this was already posted..
Michael Grange: I’m told VanVleet’s 4yr/$85 deal (player option in yr 4) starts at $21.25 and then decreases by 8% in yr 2 (2021/22) before ramping up again. The drop going into summer of 2021 helps preserve Raptors cap space.

Richardson is capable of sliding over to defend small guards if needed.
He's been thrown on Trae Young and D.Lilliard often. In fact I thought he did a pretty good job on Young last year not so much on Lilliard but that's because once he gets into zone you simply aren't stopping him.
But he's definitely a improvement vs smaller guards than what they had last year.
Now DFS won't have as much pressure on him to defend by himself most nights.

yes but the assertion we need to prioritize a small guard to offset is laughable.

Yeah, I like Crowder a lot, but it's definitely worth pointing out that basically 100% of his success comes when playing the 4...seems like the people who want him will be the same ones complaining when Carlisle plays him at his natural position.
I would've been fine with bringing him in, but this is nothing to cry about.

Green is going to be 20mpg max and has no idea how to defend all the various players he is going to go up against. It will take him a full season at minimum to start to figure out how he needs to go at each player in the league. Johnson will only ever play if there is an injury or foul trouble to the many players in front of him. Crowder is a legit enforcer who can defend multiple positions. Yeah, he'd make the team better had Dallas been able to get him. (and they did want him BTW)

Crowder is a really good pickup for the Suns. I also like their pick of Smith out of Maryland. He can play at times alongside Ayton which is nice.
They will definitely be a playoff team this year.
