If the FO thought that we could land capable players at the 3 and 2 with the trade chips we have, but no helpful center other than Kaman/Camby, then it would actually make sense to create one hole in order to fill the other as it would only be a temporary hole.
I'm pretty sure that we won't be able to win it all with Damp as our center, only if the rest of the team was very good. Perhaps it's possible to create a strong team with Stack's contract and the MLE only, but Damp would still be a liability.
Granted we haven't even been able to find a shooting guard for years, so it wouldn't be encouraging to have an additional hole at the small forward position. With that said, we have never had or been able to find a great center either. Having a talented 5 could make life so much easier.
Eventually, it will probably all come down to the options that present themselves. And options that the FO is hopefully able to create.

Grizzlies hold key to 2009 draft By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports 1 hour, 2 minutes ago
The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to talk tough, saying they’re unafraid to draft Ricky Rubio with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft, but no one believes them.
Nevertheless, Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace finds himself in a tough spot. He has a volatile owner, Michael Heisley, puffing out his chest, and a player agent, Dan Fegan, threatening to embarrass the franchise should it try to take Rubio.
Apparently, Heisley has been as impatient as ever with Wallace. This ebbs and flows, but league sources say Pau Gasol’s(notes) marvelous play in the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship run has Heisley coming down on Wallace all over again for last year’s trade. Of course, Heisley pushed for the lousy Lakers deal, but that’s been lost in the revisionist history.
The Sacramento Kings had been the most likely team to cut a deal with Memphis to move into the second spot to take Rubio, but league sources say the Kings’ motivation to do so has waned. The Kings don’t want to give up Jason Thompson(notes) and their fourth pick to get to No. 2, especially considering there’s a chance Rubio could drop to Sacramento anyway. Fegan has no issues with Rubio in Oklahoma City or Sacramento, but he’ll be difficult if the point guard ends up in Memphis.
Minnesota’s offer of a package that includes Kevin Love(notes) and a first-round pick intrigues Wallace too, sources say.
Wallace is enamored with University of Memphis freshman Tyreke Evans but thinks he could move down and still draft him. Nothing happens in this draft until the Grizzlies make a decision; then the dominos will start to fall.
The Chicago Bulls are trying to convince the New Jersey Nets to take their 16th and 26th picks to move to No. 11, and one Eastern Conference executive says Chicago’s target is Wake Forest forward James Johnson.
Some say Johnson has been slipping and could be available at No. 16, but no one seems sure about anything in this draft.
The Nets are considering the proposal. They’ve been intrigued by Louisville shooting guard Terrence Williams at No. 11, but could be willing to drop down with the belief that North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough could be available at 16.
As for Johnson, if he somehow drops to No. 21, you can count on the New Orleans Hornets letting him pass. After playing pick-up ball with Johnson in Winston-Salem the past two summers, Hornets star Chris Paul(notes) has no use for him, several league sources said.
“He talked way too much trash to Chris,” one source insisted. “Bad idea.”
Mark Jackson is the top candidate for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ coaching job, with Bill Laimbeer as a likely member of his staff.
League executives say new GM David Kahn will hire a coach whom he can hold a hammer over, and certainly Jackson would owe him. Jackson has wanted to become a head coach since his retirement five years ago, but no one has shown an inclination to hire him right out of the television booth. Kahn’s ex-boss, New York Knicks GM Donnie Walsh, came the closest to taking that leap of faith until Mike D’Antoni became available.
Kahn was an executive in Indiana when Jackson played point guard for the Pacers.
Mike Fratello is eager for the job, too, but it’s unlikely he’ll be given the chance to coach a young team. Fratello pursued the Sacramento Kings’ job hard, but was rebuffed. Fratello and Kahn worked together at NBC Sports in the 1990s.
For all the Portland Trail Blazers’ usual misdirection plays about moving up in the draft, few say they’re sincere in climbing into the lottery. Ultimately, it’s thought that the Blazers are trying to clear cap space – perhaps as much as $10 million – and multiple league executives think Portland is determined to sign Orlando Magic free agent Hedo Turkoglu(notes).
For now, the Blazers are trying to find a taker for point guard Sergio Rodriguez(notes) and his $1.6 million salary. They’re interested in Dallas Mavericks free agent Jason Kidd(notes), too. The Mavericks want to keep Kidd, who will probably ask for $8 million a season.
The Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed Vince Carter(notes) again, sources said. As financial losses mount for New Jersey’s ownership, it appears more likely that the Nets will try to move Carter and the two years and $33.6 million left on his deal. The Nets would have to take Ben Wallace(notes) and Sasha Pavlovic(notes) in return. The Spurs haven’t given up their long-standing pursuit of Carter, but a deal with San Antonio has never gained traction. … Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady(notes) would love a move to the Chicago Bulls, one league executive said, but Bulls GM Gar Forman has no interest. Still, the Rockets are determined to move his expiring $23 million contract. … League executives say Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand(notes) and the four years and $65 million left on his contract are available. But as one Western Conference GM said: “Who’s going to take that with him missing 130 games in the past two years?” … The Rockets, Cavaliers and Blazers are interested in buying first-round picks. … Celtics guard Ray Allen(notes) has expressed a desire for a contract extension, league executives say, but that isn’t happening in Boston. … Stephon Marbury(notes) is telling friends he believes that the Celtics want to re-sign him. … The Knicks want Stephen Curry and Curry wants them, but it’s unlikely Walsh will move up from No. 8 to be sure they get him. … The Bulls are trying to move useless Jerome James(notes) and his $6.6 million contract to create more cap space to re-sign Ben Gordon(notes). If they don’t send the Nets their two first-round picks for No. 11, they’ll have to ship one of those picks to get a team to take James from them. … As teams cut costs, the advanced scout for future opponents appears to be a casualty. The Spurs and Nets plan to go without full-time advance scouts next season. … Few second-round prospects have risen in the eyes of executives the way St. Joseph’s forward Ahmad Nivins has in the offseason. Nivins, a strong, 6-foot-9 forward, was the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Player of the Year. Nivins visits the Spurs over the weekend. … The NBA Players Association high school All-American camp in Charlottesville, Va., has been one of the best gatherings of prep talent in history, recruiting analysts say. It’s thought that 24 of the best 25 prep stars in the class of 2010 were there this week. The Players Association camp does the best job of life-skill training for top prospects, including lectures on stress management and sex education.

Shaquille O'Neal is not coming to the Mavericks
Here's one big thing that won't happen this summer. A really big thing, actually.
Shaquille O'Neal is not coming to Dallas, unless it's to live out his post-NBA retirement years.
You've no doubt heard and read things about his interest in joining the Mavericks. I confess I have no idea about the validity of those thoughts.
But after chatting up some insiders, what I can tell you is that O'Neal is not an over-the-top acquisition anymore. He had decent numbers last season, but let's face it: if you can't get along with Steve Nash, then something's wrong. And there is considerable evidence that at least some of the Phoenix Suns' internal problems last season could be traced to the turmoil brought forth by O'Neal and all of his Shaq-ness, for lack of a better term.
The best thing O'Neal would be worth in a Mavericks' uniform would be to boost ticket sales. But last I checked, the AAC has been pretty darn full for most every game.
Listen, we here at the blog are Shaq fans like everybody else. He's funny and he's still a force in the paint. But he's not what he once was - and he also wants another two years tacked onto his contract.
It all points to a lovely union between him and LeBron or him and KG or him and somebody else. But not him and Dirk.

Talking about getting Shaq was one of the more feasible of the ridiculous trade rumors being discussed around here.
We'll just talk about dog food to appease those who get annoyed by such trivial things.
Ridiculous.

I don't so much care about the money. The years are what's important for a player his age.

yeah, but there are a lot of people who think a one year contract is one year too many.
I'm figuring it'll be 2, maybe 3 with the 3rd or the 2nd being Stack-like.

"I have no use for this player...banish him!"
That's what I get from that.
I think the first 5 picks of this draft will be very, very interesting to see what goes down. A handful of teams desperately want to move up in that range to try to snag a variety of players. Will those teams in trouble and have the picks try to get advantageous of the offers or just stick to drafting their guy?

Shaq: Welp since Eddie Sefko says so, I guess squash any Shaq ideas. I wasn't really down with that move anyway.
Kidd: 1 or 2 year deal.

I don't think 1 is ideal, because they REALLY like him and they're loyal to their guys, so they'll give him a multi-year deal. Kidd wants some stability and to have a run on a contending team, he just doesn't want to float around from team to team. He's in the group that would be a hefty contract that goes multiple years, like Cuban was talking about.
If it's going to be 8 million...that's going up against teams like LA and Cleveland who will only have about 5.5 or so to offer. Portland will have more than that to offer, so they could compete but I'm not really sure if that's a situation where Kidd would want to go.
1 year isn't going to cut it, 2 works for both sides, if you made it 3 then I would suspect it's like Stack's deal where a portion of it isn't guaranteed.

I see Kidd getting a 3 year, 24 mil dollar deal with the third year being a team option.

When does Kidd become a FA? Just curious.
And since we're on the topic of Free Agency, is it possible that we could pick up Marion for the MLE? And do we even want him? His numbers have been down since 2006.

To me Marion is glorified beyond his production, so I personally wouldn't go that route.
Then again, I'm more of a spectator and closet-wannabe-GM when it comes to this stuff.

If he wants to leave Toronto. The best offer he will probably get is the full MLE from someone. I would like to have him at the 3. His numbers have been down, but I believe it's because he hasn't had a creator like Nash. Kidd would like to have a finisher like Marion. Of course, this would open up our biggest trading piece in Howard to go get another star like VC or whatever. As long as we have another STAR who can score with Dirk. Marion would be excellent to have in the middle.

lol...btw, I owe like at least 6 times over for rep. I hate rep spreading...
I think if we get lucky and stand firm on our top choices with the MLE, if we throw all of it at a player, we can get them. There are only so many teams that actually have a lot of cap space, fewer than that wanna actually spend the money and then even fewer are destinations that guys would actually wanna go..maybe just for a year.
I think Cuban and Donnie will be pretty selective on who they give it to and then after making that decision, they'll figure out how many years they'll offer. I can't imagine it'll be more than 2-3 at the MLE.
I'd like us to take care of Stack's issue first and relatively early. I don't want it to go down to the wire in August. Figure out what you can get for him and then run with it. Based on whatever it is and the timing of the situation, hopefully those bargain MLE guys are primed to just get signed.

I know Kidd wouldn't do 1 year but that is all he is valuable for talent wise IMO, I think he is on fumes. There's no way I sign him for more than 2 yrs. I don't see him as a guy who is going to provide what a championship caliber team needs, much less for a few years to come. I see him signing as some have said 3yrs with the last year being a team option of some sorts.

...yep, sounds good. He might have two more productive years left in the tank. The third year could be similar to Stack's contract and thus turn Kidd into a valuable trade chip. That sounds better to me than signing him to a one-year contract and just letting him go next year without anything in return.
Whether he gets 4, 14, or 24 million for his extension doesn't really matter, as it wouldn't affect our plans if Cuban was indeed willing and able to spend money. It would be much worse if Kidd were to leave and we had to use our availabe trade chips not only for a center and a shooting guard but for a point guard as well. Kidd has to stay.

To be honest, I'd like getting Marion, but not as a starter as a 3 as you stated. He could come off the bench as either as 2 guard or SF, he'd be great as a 6th man; quite possibly our best MLE option.
Good Center/Hollins
Dirk/Bass or Bass replacement
Josh/Wright/Marion
Good Acquisition/Wright/Marion
Kidd/JJB/Draft
Both Wright and Marion have the same body type 6'7" (Marion has about 15 lbs on Antoine) so they both have the ability to play SG or SF. Thats a pretty nice line up to me.
lol 69th post

That's probably the case, but I think you can go ahead and peg Damp back in at center, I don't think he's leaving this summer now.
It just depends on what we're able to get for Stack, I'd be excited for a big deal but prepared for a moderate one in terms of the name coming back.

Who are some moderate names? Stars for bad teams are decent players for a top notch team. Ex) Stephen Jackson for the Warriors, and Stephen Jackson for the Spurs. Is RJ a moderate player? If thats the case, then I wouldn't mind getting a player of his caliber on our team in the SG position (Yes, I know he's not a 2 guard, he's just an example)
Stack, Terry and Damp aren't enough to fill in those two positions? I suppose so, but one can hope.
Is Damps value going up next season? If so can someone explain?

nothing will happen like last season and the front office will just wait till 2010 to go for a star next to dirk..

He would be great off the bench, but I don't think he would sign with us to be a back up. He would probably just resign with Toronto. Where he would be the starter and make more money.

How do we know that he's more interested in money than a ring? Besides, who's ever said "I just can't wait to play in Toronto!" I thought Toronto was trying to save money anyway.

Your right about that, but then I look at teams like Portland or the Spurs who would probably be interested in him starting. The Spurs especially since they love picking up vets, and need a better starting SF. We have an excellent chance to get him. I wonder about his attitude coming off the bench though.

Oh Oh.. i want to get in on the fantasy trade ideas since Shaq is supposedly off the table (since you know... Sefko said so)
Damp/Stack/22/(S/T Bass if need be) for Vince Carter/Eduardo Najera
J-Ho/(S/T Bass if need be) for Kaman
MLE to Marion
