1+ TO at the min
The hold for his spot is the same as his contract so literally a zero risk move
He’s no home run or triple, but he’s a no-risk bunt that may get you a base hit.

This is the guy we got NYK to bite on so we could get DSJ, who is now out of the NBA. We traded DSJ plus picks to get The Unicorn(lite). And now we got the guy who turns out to be better than DSJ, and we got him for free.
He'll make Brunson work harder for his minutes, and won't be the defensive liability Brunson was in the playoffs. At the least, he is a tradable piece, who makes it possible we could also trade Brunson. Really good move, Nico.

Agreed. I like Frank. Long defender that is still young with room to grow (hopefully). Plus it allows us to try and move Brunson before he is due a payday. I like Brunson, but I don’t think I want to pay him what he will likely command on the open market.

I think Frank will potentially replace Burke, not Brunson. But I'm not even sure he will get an active roster spot when the season starts.

Yeah no way in hell our sixth man is up to lose his spot against a guy who could barely get a roster spot in New York.
Burke should be scared though. I bet in camp they will be fighting it out.

Burke will definitely be motivated. I feel like he's a very capable player. I hope he realizes how important this preseason is and how he cannot quit there should he not lose his roster spot.

After extending Luka Doncic and re-signing Tim Hardaway Jr. to long-term deals, the Mavericks are set to be over the cap over the next few years. They could look to lock up other core players and establish more tradeable salaries. Jalen Brunson and Dorian-Finney Smith are eligible for extensions worth up to $55.6 million over four years. Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell are also eligible for extensions that can up to three more years. –

I am glad to hear we are going to work over the cap again. They have been MUCH better at doing that versus this plan power bs for 10 years straight.

The last two moves that Donnie made certainly don't look great.
Seth Curry for J.Rich (who walked) and Bey (who doesn't even have a camp deal)
Johnson/Iwundu + SRP for Reddick (who retired) and Melli (who went to Europe)

And on top of that, he totally nailed the reason why we didn't advance in the playoffs which was Luka needing to pass more.
That man wanted to be gone.

Garrison Matthews turns down two-way. He’s now a UFA.
We got a lot of 6’5-6’7” guys and a hard 17/17 on the roster but I think he’s worth a kick of the tires

He shot 39% from 3 last season. Wish we had a free roster spot.

I just saw a few highlights and looked at his stats. Think I saw play him play a little for Washington last season. Nice stroke and can shoot on the move off screens some ala JJ Redick. You’re probably right though he is limited, reminds me a little of Matt Thomas who played for Toronto recently.

So I guess the big question right now is whether we extend Brunson or not. I was on the fence with Rick on board, but it looks like everything could change with Kidd with regards to each player. Brunson looked great in the preseason. 4/55 is the extension number.
I'd do it because we need tradable assets, and he plays the most important position in basketball. I'm still not sold yet on him running the team, but if he can an even better version of himself, then it's still likely worth it.
Will he accept it though? I think he should as there isn't much cap space to go around next summer league wide.
Thoughts?

Agree. He’s at least a serviceable player and as you said worst case you can trade him
I’m hoping for a step up in terms of playoff performance this year so getting him locked up ahead of time would be ideal

I think people are really understimating Brunson. He's one of the frontrunners for sixth man and has a trajectory to be the next Lowry, but at a younger age.
I know he's been underwhelming at passing, but I think a lot of that was just Rick last year.
I think it would be crazy to let Brunson get to be an unrestricted free agent. If we lowball him, we lose him and still have no cap space to improve. If we lock him up, we're just more over the cap, but have a prospect that has grown every year and is approaching star status.

I really like Brunson, but Lowry has been a great defender and rebounder at his position for a decade + and is a true point that can also play off ball. Multiple All-Star and Borderline Hall of Famer. Brunson has a ways to go. I think we should extend him though.

So 13.75 per. Can we structure it so it’s descending ?
Thoughts?

I agree that we have limited flexibility and need to sign Brunson and DFS if only for trade matching purposes, otherwise there is no way fully replace them except with exceptions.

Not saying he's the same player now. Just saying that at the same point in both their careers, Brunson is actually super comparable and Lowry was considered the biggest FA piece this offseason.
Lowry in year 3 - per36
13pts, 4reb, 6ast on 44%/26%/80%
Brunson in year 3 - per 36
18pts, 5reb, 5ast on 52%/41%/80%
Obviously, Lowry has more defense and Brunson is more offense. Brunson has killer 3pt numbers, but isn't a volume 3pt shooter so that number is a little exaggerated. The numbers show that Brunson is a pro who works on his game every year and it shows in jumps in performance. He's already a solid starter/6th man who is primed to keep growing over the next few years.

Oh I agree with that. He’s been a real efficient player for us and even pretty tradeable on the extension contract if a deal presents itself. He’ll be getting more than some previous 6th man of the year types like Clarkson or Lou Williams but he is also younger and cap will rise so he’ll be less % against it. I just don’t see him ever being better than average defensively best case due to physical limitations. But I do like the guy and I’m pretty sure he’ll be at least offered the extension. Not sure what we’re waiting for? Maybe cap savvy people around here might have a better answer.

He can sign his extension up until June 30th 2022.

Guys like Brunson are no doubt extension types, as someone mentioned he's good enough to be an easily tradeable asset should we wish to go another direction in the future. I just like the kid, too. Helps he won me some $ with that Nova run a few years back.
