I'd like to add that among PGs:
Brunson ranked 4th in scoring efficiency. Only Steph, Sumner, and Lillard were more efficient.
Brunson ranked 21st in PER/VA/EWA among PGs, meaning he's better than many starting PGs (Lowry, Halliburton, Wall, Murray, Morrant, etc.) in those stat categories and is a starting-caliber PG according to those stats.
And that was year three. He's made large jumps every year.

At least we got to see Rick score 13 while allowing 33 in a third quarter with a team other than the Mavs.
We may lose tomorrow, but Rick’s crap coaching hamstrung the Pacers and cost them that game. So happy to not be losing like that.

Classic Mavs (now Pacers) meltdown. Up by 23, blow it in the third.
Scrape back but too late, lose by 1.
And the kicker, an offensive rebound cost them at the end.

Bobby Marks: The Mavericks committed contract malpractice with Jalen Brunson after he was drafted in the 2nd rd. We will (or should) never see a straight 4 year contract without a team option in year 4 again. Brunson goes for 31 last night. He’s an unrestricted FA in July. pic.twitter.com/zuDgCn0j8z

Great article on JB
Jalen Brunson Could Be Even Better Than You Think
How would you feel if the Mavericks had Fred VanVleet, or Mike Conley in his heyday? They just might — if they give Brunson enough minutes to find out.

[Lowe's 10 Things] On the "blah Mavs"
Article/Report
Zach Lowe wrote about the Mavs in his latest article:
Jalen Brunson's newest trick: the Smitty fake spin!
That's a canny way to leverage the threat of Kristaps Porzingis's jumper; Brunson knows his defender will overreact to any fake there.
Brunson has again opened the season as the Mavs' second-best player. He's averaging 15 points on 50% shooting, and (again) finishing around the basket at a rate that should be impossible for a ground-bound fire hydrant.
The Mavs have blitzed opponents by eight points per 100 possessions with Brunson on the floor -- and lost non-Brunson minutes by (not a typo!) 17.4 points per 100 possessions. Dallas is somehow minus-91 in 192 minutes Luka Doncic has played without Brunson. The Mavs' lethargic first quarters got bad enough, Jason Kidd started Brunson twice last week.
Dallas is 7-4 despite ranking 22nd in offense and 19th in defense -- with an ugly minus-33 point differential. That is so weird, I'm almost impressed.
Maybe gutting out more early wins than they deserve portends something bigger when everything clicks. Doncic will snap into a livelier gear soon. Dallas is shooting tons of 3s. Kidd has dabbled in playing smaller -- with Porzingis as the only big, and Doncic sometimes the nominal "power forward" alongside three guards. That's promising.
Or maybe this is who the Mavs are: sludgy, praying for good Porzingis games, redirecting too much offense away from Doncic spread pick-and-rolls. (Maybe call two fewer pindowns per game for Tim Hardaway Jr. long 2s while Doncic pouts like a puffy statue at half-court? In fairness, Doncic's time of possession and pick-and-roll volume are up, per Second Spectrum. That said, I throw up a little in my mouth every time Porzingis wanders into a "post-up" at the elbow during what might otherwise be an effective Doncic-Dwight Powell pick-and-roll.)
With Jamal Murray and Kawhi Leonard hurt, the West is open. Doncic is that good. Ask the Clippers. But the Mavs aren't playing with force. They are last in shots at the rim, and the folks at Basketball-Reference say the Mavs' portion of attempts from the restricted area is the lowest ever in its database. Only 14% of Doncic's shots have come at the basket, by far the lowest mark of his career.
Powell doesn't do enough on either end. Dorian Finney-Smith is shooting 26% from deep, and is skittish working his pump-and-go game. Porzingis doesn't look ready to anchor a good defense as solo big man. Put it all together, and it's hard right now to see a Mavs team with enough two-way balance to win three playoff series. It's in there, somewhere, but not accessible today.
Everything will look better when Doncic finds his verve. He has a ton of pet moves too; this is an under-the-radar favorite:
Doncic should patent this U-turn, moonwalking 3. He keeps those semi-circles around his screener tight.

Speaking of the game last night, there were several of the Mavs there to support the Legends. Luka, Boban, Maxi, Powell, THJ, and Brunson. My son got Powell's autograph.

That's awesome! It's one thing to talk about chemistry, but it's real when you go support guys on a Saturday night that you spent training camp and preseason with. Those guys on assignment worked hard and it seems like the core Mavs recognize it and went to show appreciation and support.

Yea Green gave an interview and said it was for 1 game.
I'd honestly rather have EO getting mins than WCS.

Per Coop, Mavs have a 115.3 offensive rating in their last 4 games. Only GS bests that.

“I felt like going to the Lakers was a done deal and that we were going to figure it out. I was going to come home,” DeRozan told Yahoo Sports after scoring a game-high 38 points to lead the Bulls to a 121-103 victory at Staples Center. “The business side of things just didn’t work out. A couple of things didn’t align. It didn’t work out. It’s just part of the business, part of the game. My next option was definitely Chicago. So, looking back at it, it worked out well.
Basically Derozen had no interest in coming here is the way I read it. Doesn’t matter if we tried to reach out. He had his mind made up he was going elsewhere.

Which begs to question even with Luka the Mavs aren't a FA destination which is sad because we went through that same shit with Dirk despite him being a top elite talent.
We screw up in the draft's and we can't get top tier FA's
Seems like being aggressive in trades might be the only way to go

I’m willing to give the new front office a chance before I say they can’t draft or attract FA’s. Derozen was also traded to Chicago, so it’s not as though the front office messed up on a sales pitch or something. If nothing else Euro players want to play with Luka, and there are much more of them now than when Dirk played.

Thad Young
Al Farouq Aminu (salary ballast)
2025 First-round pick
Two second-round picks
That's a pretty solid get for a player walking away.
For us, that would have probably been:
Kleber + Powell + Green
2025 first-round pick
two second-round picks
Totally possible for us if we wanted, but it's not a move a lame-duck GM does on their way out and not a move a new GM does in their first week. It also sounds like LAL and CHI were both front in line so the only way to jump them would be to throw in even more value and the only other value we could really give is 2027 FRP. That would take our trade assets from empty to running on fumes.

Legends vs. Hustle (L 100-106)
condensed game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1im45a6adE
Jones looking good - best player on the floor for our team
Hunt showing a mix of athleticism and range in the highlights but only shot 6-17
no true center on that team?
refs missed some easy ones that went the other way - goaltending and travel

Without M. Brown they are playing 6'8" Love as their center and 6'6" Omoruyi as PF.
Carlik Jones - another amazing game. Efficient 30pts (66% from three). Averaging 26-7-6
Hunt looked solid. Wasnt super efficient.
McLaughlin and Omoruyi did not have great games against the 6'11" shotblocker.

Eugene Omoruyi is a baller. There just is no question about it. So is Carlik.
Willie is not.

The G League looks so talent deprived when I watch those highlights that it's hard to take really seriously.
That said, making shots is making shots. I didn't know Eugene could shoot the ball like that.

Making shots is great, but for me its also:
The IQ he has shown in preseason and G league
Fluid movements and agility
Anticipation
Nose for the ball and effective hustle plays
Has handles and can pass the ball
Has a knack for rebounding and scoring around the bucket.
All of which WCS can't do. He's a better option than Sterling and I'm not sure he wouldn't be better than Bullock. Both of those guys have been disappointing to me.

If Omoruyi was 6'8" or 6'10" he'd be a lottery pick. The thing holding him back is that he's 6'6" in shoes.
He dominated last night against a 6'9" center, but had one of his worst games the prior game when the opposing team had a 6'11" guy in the middle. In the NBA, he's going to have to overcome even bigger/stronger/more athletic guys in the middle.

Nothing can top Dirk's final game that I can't believe I got tickets to. Jersey retirement will be awesome, but the two don't compare IMO.
Hopefully Cuban will open up a block of tickets like he did for the playoffs.
