At center try to swing a trade for Gortat (expiring, he is gone at the deadline for sure) or Bynum on a one year guaranteed deal.
And then try to get 1-2 one of the remaining FAs without overpaying: Iggy, Josh Smith...

Didn't think you were being a grammar nazi. Was just poking fun of myself for the error, while at the same time registering my disagreement - through feigned ignorance - with the characterization of my post as confusingly worded. At any rate, your current interpretation of what I wrote is pretty much what I was intending to convey, so it sounds like we're on the same page: Iggy as your second best player = no problem; Iggy as your second option for manufacturing points when things get tight = problem.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story...eter-defenders article from january on best perimeter defenders
Quote:
1. Josh Smith | Average rank: 17.94
Smith is certainly athletic enough to guard any position on the floor, though it's questionable whether he is a true perimeter stopper because of the amount of time he spends at power forward and guarding the rim. According to my system, he has played 33 percent of his minutes at small forward this season. He ranks sixth on a per-possession basis against isolations and second in steal-plus-block percentage. Smith is just a really good defensive player, which hasn't always been the case during his career.
2. 2. Andre Iguodala | 21.31
This ranking is true to Iguodala's reputation, as he is a big part of Denver's improved perimeter defense. Iguodala always draws the opponent's top perimeter scorer in crunch time, so he gets isolated fairly frequently. He ranks seventh in points per play allowed against isos, and fourth overall, so it's never a winning strategy to go at Iggy. He leads the league in RAPM.

I think Josh could get his shot selection turned around next to carlisle, drew appeared to want him to take jumpshots as he took much less under woodson.

Smith is likely to leave Atlanta, with several teams, including Milwaukee and Dallas, expected to vie for his services.

Per Woj, Rockets just traded Thomas Robinson to the Blazers. Presumably for no returning salary.

I like JJ but he's in a weird position for the Mavs, he will probably get 8 mill or so this offseason and mavs are (at least in my mind) going to get one of top 5 free agents in (most likely bynum, iguodala, or josh smith) they will be costly and mavs won't have enough to afford JJ and he isn't good enough to be the biggest signing of free agency

Asik I would like if mavs miss out on Dwight he would give mavs quite a bit of more cap space to play with too, he's a terrific defender and rebounder.

Mavs among teams to contact Andrew Bynum's agent
link
The agent for center Andrew Bynum was among the flurry of phone calls the Mavericks made in the opening hours of free agency, as they began doing their due diligence on potential backup plans in case Dwight Howard decides to sign with another team.
Agent David Lee said the Mavs and “several other teams” expressed interest in the wee hours of Monday morning. Lee declined to elaborate or specify which other teams contacted him about the 2012 All-Star who missed all of last season with the 76ers because of bad knees.
Lee recently told the Associated Press that the 7-foot, 285-pound Bynum, who averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 2011-12, expects to be healthy for the beginning of training camp. The Mavs would obviously want their own medical staff to evaluate Bynum before signing him to a contract, which would likely include language to manage the team’s financial risks if his knee problems continue.
The Mavs’ medical staff, headlined by head athletic trainer Casey Smith and Dr. T.O. Souryal, could be a factor in Bynum choosing to come to Dallas if the Mavs make a competitive offer. They helped get Tyson Chandler’s career back on track after he arrived in Dallas as a dumped salary, having missed a total of 68 games in the previous two seasons due to foot and ankle injuries.
Bynum’s missed games total in the last six seasons: 82, six, 28, 17, 32 and 47.
Utah’s Al Jefferson, San Antonio’s Tiago Splitter and Minnesota’s Nikola Pekovic are the other most accomplished centers on the market. Splitter and Pekovic are restricted free agents whose teams have the rights to match any offer and are interested in keeping them.

Would love for our team doctors to get a chance to evaluate Bynum and see if he couldn't pass their tests ala Chandler back before 2011. It would be interesting to see how that process would work.

Yeah, like Casey Smith evaluating Chandler during the Olympics. Definitely gotta send Smith to check out Bynum.

Apparently Bynum refusing to work out with teams. Massive red flag. If Dwight decides on someone else the Mavericks should only go for a very short contract.
Better yet, make a move for Jefferson, Pekovic, or Cousins (who apparently wants out of Sac Town). Even healthy Bynum's mental problems really concern me.
