Should I dust off my VC V's?

It's Starting!!!!
Jermaine O'neal was just traded for Shawn Marion!! Its make a move season. Either of those guys would have looked good in Dallas, for any player but Dirk. Like Marion's defense. O'neal is an great player. Lets get the Shaq deal done.

Marion will go to whichever team pays him the most this off-season. Jermaine O'Neal is an injury away from retiring.
I'd rather have a chance in 2010 than make a crappy trade just to do it.

Donuts: NBA Rumor Roundup
Tail-Chasing The Transaction-Related Rumors To Open All-Star Weekend
By Mike Fisher -- DB.com
Let’s first bill a lot of this as what a lot of this is: NBA media tail-chasing. The best example I can give is here with the Vince Carter-to-Dallas rumor. Website A breathlessly links to Website B and even though Website B says the trade is “not imminent’’ – a self-shootdown which doesn’t really make sense because with just six days left until the Feb. 19 trade deadline, everything do-able had better be fairly imminent – Website A nevertheless screams in its headline:
DALLAS CLOSE TO LANDING VINCE?
Dudes. … Website B specifically told you it’s NOT imminent!
Keeping all that in mind. … a Saturday morning Donuts roundup of NBA transactions and maybes and tail-chase droppings:
DONUT 1: Here’s a good way to gauge whether you want Amare: How crappy would you feel if he ended up with the Lakers? I suggested the other day – only half-kidding – that now that Bynum is hurt again, LA is about due to pull off another Gasol deal.
Odom for Amare?
DONUT 2: I am finding absolutely no evidence that Dallas is “pursuing’’ Vince Carter while offering Josh Howard. None. I’m not shooting down the possibility of conversations. I’m shooting down the “pursuing’’ part and I’m shooting down the “Vince-for-Josh’’ part. I have a feeling that writers simply keep regurgitating each others’ stories. I mean, there were “sources’’ in one paper saying it on Tuesday and then “new sources’’ saying it to another outlet on Thursday and then “new sources’’ saying again to the first paper on Friday. … I believe it’s all one source and I believe the story is really being generated by one outlet. And then other outlets coattail onto the thing as link bait.
Ah, journalism. I’m very proud.
DONUT 3: In a story that shocks nobody expect maybe AP writers covering the NBA’s new rule that limits the number of tattoos a player can have, Terry Porter is apparently packing. Or not.
DONUT 4: The Bulls are shaking up their suits. Or not.
DONUT 5: Vecsey notes that the Suns’ Kerr and the Cavs’ Ferry are chums. So maybe Amare to Cleveland?
DONUT 7: We’ve got a big piece coming on this in the next 48 hours or so. … But I’ll tease: There is major, major precedent for the Mavs doing a deadline deal. It’s a precedent having to do with another franchise that generally remains at championship-level. And it’s a precedent that is top-of-mind to the Triangle of Trust. More coming.
DONUT 8: Using that What-If-A-Mavs-Rival-Did-It? thinking: How about Vince to SA?
DONUT 9: A betting man might go with the Kings’ Brad Miller to Dallas. And it’s a smart bet for the Mavs, as long as he comes cheap.
DONUT 10: Here’s a Bucks-Blazers rumor that shakes up the second tier of both rosters.
DONUT 11: An Amare wild card: How about OKC? Depending on what the Thunder would have to forfeit, wouldn’t that club – already featuring Durant – become one of the NBA’s most watch-worthy teams?
DONUT 12: Marion to Toronto, J.O. to Miami. Done. And it’s only the start.
DONUT 6: In fact, how about this report that says Danny Ferry offered the expiring contract of Wally Zoolander, rookie J.J. Hickson and a first-round pick for Stoudemire?

That is interesting. I hope they do make a move. As currently constructed they are not a title contender. Playoff contender? Yes, but no shot at a title.
They need a star to be paired with Dirk badly. I don't think Vince is that guy because he takes too many games off a la his cousin. But even if they don't get a star they need at least to make small move.

Donut 7 definitely means Shaq. I'm up for the trade as we're not making any noise without it. With Shaq, we'd have 3 hall of famers that want a ring.

We're immediately considered a TITLE contender this season and next barring injury with Shaq in our mix minus JHO!

Wow, bit of a stretch there, no? It "definitely" means Shaq?

Do the Spurs really need VC? They have 3 really good scorers, and there's only so much ball to go around. They might be better off keeping Hill, who seems like he might be really good some day, and Mason, who is an excellent role player.

I don't think the Spurs NEED VC. They'd love to have him but they're built to win in the playoffs as is.
#7 is probably one of the best teasers I've seen in a while.

Man I tell you what. It's gonna take at least a nice 5 game win streak after the ASB for me to get over us NOT making a move if that is how it goes down.

ANALYSIS OF DONUT 7 (by DLordofBasketball)
Quote:
Fish's teasing Donut 7 is causing quite a stir.
DONUT 7: We've got a big piece coming on this in the next 48 hours or so. … But I'll tease: There is major, major precedent for the Mavs doing a deadline deal. It's a precedent having to do with another franchise that generally remains at championship-level. And it's a precedent that is top-of-mind to the Triangle of Trust. More coming.
I have no inside knowledge of what he's talking about. But just from reading, I think I can help unravel some of the mystery.
First of all, it's vital to understand that fish is careful with words, when it comes to trades and speculation and rumors. I am certain he chose his words very precisely.
So, what exactly did he say above? Or more importantly, what did he NOT say?
1. Is he saying he has uncovered the likelihood of one certain trade happening? No.
2. Is he saying he knows that a trade will happen, but doesn't know which one? No.
3. Is he saying there is another franchise that always makes deadline deals, and because they do it the Mavs are trying to copy them? No.
I think I've figured out EXACTLY where he's going with this, so I won't steal his thunder by putting my guess here in print, prior to him writing his article. But you guys can see if you can unravel the clues.
Look closer, and here's the direction he has given you.
1. He has found a "precedent" ..in fact, a "major, major precedent" ...that he has noticed.
What is a precedent? A precedent is an example that guides you for the future.
But keep in mind, a precedent is NOT the same thing as a pattern or a custom.
So he will be focusing on an occurrence in the past that might guide the Mavs' thinking over the next week. Don't look for a whole series of events (such as, team X makes a deal at almost every trade deadline). Instead, we're looking for something earth-shattering or somehow unusual or somewhat unique - it was "major, major" in its impact.
2. What kind of "precedent" was it? A trade, doncha think? A trade that made a difference.
3. The precedent comes from "another franchise that generally remains at championship-level." Does that mean they are at the top this year? No. maybe they are. Maybe not. But generally, that's their track record - "at championship level." Top tier of the league, in other words.
4. Most importantly, fish thinks this precedent is and will be "top-of-mind" to the Mavs. So what sort of precedent would be so relevant? One that occurred when Team X was in a similar situation as the Mavs are now, I'd wager.
Where are the Mavs? A playoff team, but not one at the very top. It's safe to say they're considered out of the mix for a title. Look for a "precedent" that altered another playoff-but-not-contender team's fortunes. What did they do? How did it change things and keep them at the level they expected?
Garnett trade? Gasol trade? Blow it up trade that then led to a big jump soon after? I have my guess ...you take yours.
Your guesses below.
...EDIT: If you think you can figure out the precedent, then go one step further and flesh out what is the "blueprint" that is derived, that might guide us to the Mavs' current mindset on a trade. For example, if the precedent to follow is the Gasol trade, then they'd need to be looking for a superstar in a salary dump by a struggling team with money problems, and the cost would be youth, picks, and expirings.
....so, what theoretical trade best fits YOUR idea of the precedent you've found?

The problem with getting Rip Hamilton is you have a lineup of:
Kidd/Terry/Rip.Howard/Dirk in the final 5 minutes. Or do you replace Damp for Howard and have a lineup of Kidd/Terry/Rip/Dirk/Damp. Either way the lineup just isn't that good IMO.

Way to go out on a limb there. On my Rip projection, I was just responding to many posters at DB thinking it was Rip.
I think it will be the other Piston, Wallace.
